Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign D Simon Benoit (1 year, $775k) Re-signed ( 3 year, $1.35mm)

Really like this signing.

I’m not confident in Giordano and this guy looks like he can bring some much needed physical presence to our 3rd pairing.

Does he need Waivers to be sent down?

Yes, he'd need waivers, but I'd say the risk of being claimed is small. He's good depth, that's for sure, but that's all. Depth.

I like this signing particularly for the cost ... big physical players that block shots at league minimum is just fine. If he's used appropriately, he should be effective.

I'm expecting Treliving to start molding the Dcore in his image of Big, Mean and mobile and this signing fits those characteristics.

Hits, fights and blocks shots and comes with a big frame and wing span .. What is not to like here?
Well his first addition of John Klingberg is about the exact opposite of those characteristics, other then the big frame and wing span.

See, the Auston Matthews contract still allows us to do lots of things!!

With Treliving he is attempting to address another problem outside of just hits, and block shots.

The Toronto Maple Leafs in 2022-23 had the 2nd lowest ranking 31st overall in goals scored by Dmen only ahead of Vancouver and that is a fallout of paying 4 forwards 1/2 you Salary Cap. Offense from the defense is near league bottom and John Klingberg is being brought in to fix and address that.

John Klingberg wasted little time establishing himself among the NHL's scoring defensemen, tallying 40 points in 65 games in 2014-15. The 29-year-old became the Dallas Stars' highest-scoring blueliner over the past seven seasons with 327 career points and is ninth overall among all NHL rearguards during that period. A superb skater with strong play-making abilities, Klingberg tallied 40 points or more in his first five NHL campaigns. He will likely surplant Rielly on Leafs PP1 and hopes to lead one of the leagues lowest scoring Dcores to more success through greater offensive contribution.

it's been so long since we've had a shot from the blue line threat

this is so true.

I think Klingberg will help with that, and he can move the puck. Benoit and others can clear the front of the net and keep people off our goalie.

We can have both those things.

Absolutely a need but calling it the fallout of the core 4 is garbage. It was the fallout of specific choices on D personnel. We could have had offense from the backend at the price we paid for last year’s D

You need both those things on a successful NHL team.

But this was among the first things Treliving did,

Meanwhile, the Leafs declined to tender qualifying offers to RFA defensemen Mac Hollowell, and Victor Mete. Both Hollowell and Mete are listed at 5-foot-9 and it's believed that new Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is looking to reshape his defense with bigger bodies.

The C and LW depth still does not look very good. If you put Domi at Center, the LW depth suffers greatly. If you put him at LW the Center depth remains awful. You have Domi and Tavares injured at the same time...look out.

I'm not particularly concerned about the C depth at this point. Matthews, Tavares, Kampf, Domi, Nylander, Gambrell, Holmberg can all play C well enough. LW, could be a bit more of a challenge.... that being said, we are at 47 of 50 contracts, and I'd fully expect us to sign a league minimum LW still. I'm hoping it's Comtois, if he's cleared of the 2018 World Juniors mess, but we shall see.

In addition to Bertuzzi, Domi and Knies who can play LW, we also have Lafferty, Jarnkrok, Nylander who have had time at LW (though moving them there, causes issues elsewhere). We also have Robertson, McMann, Abruzzese, Hirvonen, Steeves, Ovchinnikov that can play LW too.

Could we have more depth... sure, and like I said, I'd like to add Comtois if cleared. We have some contract space, for guys at league minimum though. We probably should be looking at some PTO guys, guys like Mason Shaw LW/C, Noah Gregor LW/C (primarily used as a winger), Tyler Motte LW/C, maybe even Paul Statsny (though his game has really dropped off).

Big D is the only way. It's nice if they are mobile and skilled, but if they lack size you just get pounded back there.

There are always some exceptions, but I like that we are scaling up the back end a bit. I am sure this is just the beginning of improving and spicing up the blue line
