The problem wasn't Phaneuf, it was the team around him IMO. LOVES me some Dion. Also, I grew up in Red Deer and used to practice with the Rebels. So uhh, no favoritism.
I am actually a Dion fan as well. I was really excited when we got him and I thought he played well here. He seemed to be the lightning rod for the media’s inflict with Burke.

A prime Dion on this team right now would be a massive shot in the arm and would probably really help us, if he didn’t wound all our forwards with point shots.

My guess is Brodie gets traded next.

The Leafs need another bottom pairing defenseman like I need another Big Mac combo for breakfast. Signing this guy makes no sense. Unless it's part of a bigger picture.

Benoit plays almost twenty minutes a game.

He had 200+ hits and over 100 blocked shots last year. It doesn't matter how bad Anaheim's defense was. Benoit is still an NHL quality player.

Which means the Leafs have too many defensemen.

That's why I suspect Brodie will be traded. Otherwise what's the point in signing Benoit? He's just gonna be lost on waivers.

Someone will pick him up.

It's not like Benoit's a useless turd. He's big, young, physical, and cheap. Guys like that don't just grow on trees around the arena.

I mean, let's face it, if Benoit is really that bad then why'd Treliving even sign him to begin with?

Does the Klingberg signing hint at this?

He is the only signing that will play.

Our D is smaller than last year, but more mobile and offensive, which is better and what we need, thankfully he is doing the opposite of what you want here.
The smallest guy is 6’. They replaced a 6’2 and a 6’3 with 2 6’3.

Size wasnt their problem, speed and quickness was.

I'm thinking Tree has something in mind considering all those Dmen, a reluctant star forward and Leafs need to add some futures and another young NHL starter dman.

Almost there, almost! Hopefully Gio gets to coach those kids that still lack some experience, it would be great to see Liljegren, Timmins and now Benoit really bloom this season

The Leafs don't need to add futures, they aren't rebuilding, they are looking for the final piece

Size matters also. :wg:

Now that the Leafs have a REAL NHL GM , one of Treliving's first moves was to not qualify Mete and Hollowell both 5-9 smurfs.

Hollowell had two assists in six games with the Maple Leafs. Mete's season was derailed by a lower-body injury that kept him out for much of the season. The 25-year-old had two assists in 11 games.

Hollowell and Mete are both listed at 5-foot-9 and it's believed that new Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is looking to reshape his defense with bigger bodies.

Interesting that you left out not qualifying 6'2" Kral.
Interesting that you left out qualifying Abruzzese and SDA, two of our smallest prospects - as seen in the same tweet.
These prospects also don't have anything to do with our NHL defense, which has only gotten smaller. Treliving also didn't seem to have any issue signing 5'10" Domi.
The Leafs had a "REAL NHL GM" for the past 5 years, and every GM will have big and small players. This signing is basically this year's Benn.

Shocking that Mess cherry picked his argument

Thank you for reminding me that I'll never have to watch another Holl shift in a Leaf uniform...you've made my Saturday most joyous. Have a great long weekend.

Size being equal, you cannot tell me Domi plays the same style as Abruzzese or SDA.
I'd rather have 5'10 Domi on my team than a 6'5 Freddy the Goat, it's how they use the size that matters.

Then you're going to be very surprised this season with how Max Domi plays hockey. 15 different Leafs' forwards had more hits as members of the team than Domi had last season (22). Players like Engvall, Jarnkrok, Marner, Matthews, Kerfoot and Malgin had more hits. The only notable Leafs' forward with less hits than Domi was Nylander.

Could trade Klingberg for some help on D

Klingberg The Forward?

With Giordano being on the ice for 11 goals against in the playoffs, do you think this signing is a sign that the GM isn’t sold on Gio as an everyday player anymore? He knows him well from Calgary. Could Gio be one of those players who is shelved immediately after an “injury” until 1 week before the playoffs?

Nothing to complain about here. Right kind of spare part. If youre injured you probably want someone that can punish the other team a bit in the POs
