Chris Tanev heard his name bandied about before the 4 Nations Face-Off rosters were released last month and, now that Vegas blueliner Alex Pietrangelo has decided to skip the tournament, there’s buzz around him again.

His initial chances were good enough that there had been autumn discussions with general manager Don Sweeney and the rest of Canada’s staff through Leafs GM Brad Treliving.
“I’d talked to Tre and stuff about it,” Tanev said Tuesday after practice. “But as I’ve said, it’s not really what I’m focused in (with five games for Toronto before the break). Day-to-day stuff here is extremely important to me. We’re trying to get ourselves where we need to be, in a good spot going into this break.

I think a lot of people don't get this deal.

It's basically a way of paying a player a good amount of money without having to absorb a cap hit of $5 mil or more per season. He's not going to be playing by the end of this contract.

I'm sure another team would have given him at least $6 mil per season for two or maybe even three seasons. The question is whether he'll be good enough over the next two or three years.

He's been stellar this season - much better than Rielly and TOR's best or second best defenseman.

I don't think there's any way TOR leads the division without him.

If they get a strong playoffs out of him and another couple of good years, it'll be such a win. It was never about the final couple of years.

The only things that were ever a question with him were durability and contract length, and the latter doesn't really matter because we probably don't have a 6 year window anyways.

On the ice, Chris Tanev has been a goddamn force for as long as I can remember. I've wanted him on this team for years, we have needed a guy like him for an eternity.
