Only place I disagree is the division. I think they really need to win the division.
They need to be ready when the playoffs start even more. We've seen teams finish 1st overall (never mind winning their division) who got taken out in the 1st round. You don't want that do you?

I think they can do both - win the division and be ready. Berube strikes me as a coach who will have his team ready.

The best teams, that play the most consistently in the regular season generally win their division. The best way to be ready for the playoffs is to be the best team in the regular season. Nothing guarantees you playoff success, but being the top team in what is likely the hardest division in hockey, over 82 games preps you pretty well.

Of course, a team like the panthers can squeak it in and make some damage like they did in 2023, but those are the exceptions. Last 3 cup winners all won their divisions.

Whether they can do both or not has nothing to do with which is more important.

Tell that to the teams that finished overall who lost in the 1st round.

Great idea... except Kadri refused to waive to go to Calgary for the original trade of Brodie + Jankowski. That's why Dubas had to make the almost as bad trade for Kerfoot + Barrie.
I like Kraft PB, always have. I went to the store and Acme PB was on sale for .99 and they were out of Kraft.

So I bought the Acme PB, I didn't have to, but I just thought I came to buy PB, and even though they didn't have what I wanted and what was best for me. I did the thing I didn't have to do. What a bozo!

Only a starry eyed optimist would think this was a good signing.

Six years for an injury riddled vet isn't gonna age well. Everyone talking about burying Tanev on LTIR in a few years. But all I keep hearing is they won't be able to accrue cap space for deadline rentals.

Just because he hasn't completely trashed the team doesn't mean he won't.

Nobody as incompetent Treliving's been his whole career is suddenly gonna become good at his job. It’s like thinking the village idiot can be a chemist simply because he hasn’t blown himself up yet. Lol... successfully navigating the cap for Treliving is like me winning the Nobel prize in math.

The saddest part was how obvious he wanted Tanev.

No other GM telegraphs their intentions the way Treliving does. When he plays poker it's with the cards facing out. The guy's so in love with his player he's like a juke box hero.

Got stars in his eyes.

They’ll get 2 years of what they need on the blueline then LTIR or send him and a first to a bottom feeder for cap space. It’s a better version of the Marleau contract.

The team that does the best during the regular season is almost always a top 3 favourite going into the playoffs.

I’d be surprised if they don’t get 3-4 years minimum from Tanev.

What do you even know about optimism?
Honest question.

And when have we ever accrued cap space for the deadline? The reality is most contenders don’t.

I tend to agree with a lot of what you post and generally enjoy your zings etc but this one is just negative for the sake of being negative....extreme even. At least wait until Tanev shits the bed or falls off a cliff before trashing the signing to the extent that you are taking it. So far I like Tanev, very steady presence. How long it lasts, I don't know but neither do you. Your hate for Treliving is pretty clear. So, your saying that nobody can evolve and learn from their mistakes?

What's the backstory here? Did Treliving steal your bike or something?

Are you enjoying the start to this season? I am. It's been pretty easy to enjoy. We have played well in all six games. In our two losses we got "goalied". We have 76 games to figure out how not to let that happen come playoff time.

This team has looked very good. They have looked different too. It's hard not to like the additions of Berube, Tanev, OEL, Stolarz, Lorentz and even the guys around the edges like Pacioretty, possibly Hakanpaa coming. It's been good.

Serious question; are you enjoying this? Your post doesn't seem like a guy that is.
