Mr.

Mr. Analytics playing Moneyball looking for diamonds at the bottom of the dumpster. Seriously this wreck can't be fixed in one offseason. That is how bad stick boy has f***ed up this team.

This team should be a serious Cup contender by now, but even Dubas couldn't tell you that right now with a straight face...all he did was shuffle the chairs on the Titanic this off-season so far...does anyone honestly think that these bargain bin players he added will push the Leafs over-the-top? Dubas is just trying to survive and ice a competitive team and pray that they do some damage in the playoffs.

I don't think any of the potential top 6 forward UFAs interest the front office and I agree.

Looks like a trade is the way to go and some targets might include Bertuzzi, Rackell, or Debrusk. All three options come with a bit of risk, but should have reasonable caphits and provide what we want in a top 6 player.

Assuming we can trade for one of these guys at a reasonable value and possibly sign Galchenyuk for 1 more year, I think the team is actually better than last years.

Having Thornton and Simmonds in our top 9 at times last year made us way too slow and they both didn't add much when it mattered. Simmonds is fine in a 4th line role and Thornton is addition by subtraction (sorry Joe, helluva career but it's probably time to hang them up).

Side by side based on who we've lost from opening day last year

Hyman - Not yet Replaced.

Andersen - Mrazak. Statistically Mrazak has been better in the past 2 seasons.

Thornton - Bunting. Bunting wins this, I don't think many will argue.

Galchenyuk - Robertson. Most think Robertson is ready for a shot. Probably have to call this one equal at this point.

Until Hyman is replaced with the remaining 3.5 m in space we have it's tough to judge the off-season. Apart from that though, it hasn't been as bad as people are making it out to be

[After] and work in progress

This is a snap shot of today and will be updated as more changes are made but I thought "work in progress" would be self explanatory.. Its right in the title of the thread.

Can't include things now that haven't happened yet.
What's the first snapshot of? Galchenyuk and Dermott never played a playoff game with Tavares. The only game Tavares played had Riley Nash in the lineup and I don't even see him listed.

XXXXXXX - Matthews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares -Willy
Robertson -Kampf -Micheyev
Simmonds - Brooks - Spezza
Anderson

Reilly - Brodie
Muzz - Holl
Sandin - Lilly

Campbell
Mrazek

Trade Kerfoot, Dermott and Prospect for a top line LW. I am not sure who exactly it will be or what type of value makes sense going the other way. But Tyler Bertuzzi, Dylan Larkin, Miles Wood, and Clayton Keller fit the bill in my head of players who I can see being moved. I obviously don't expect DET, NJ or AZ to take our spare parts for their star players, but there is an appetite for all of those teams to be shit for Shane Wright with maybe a slight exception of NJ.. Additionally, AZ has been offloading money and talent very intentionally all offseason. I'd take a chance on Keller personally. I think AZ would be happy to save a bit on the cap for a player who has not played up to his 7 mill tag and still has 7 years left. Its a risk for sure, but even a 12% retention, similar to OEL, puts him at a manageable 6.29 x 7years. I believe this is a deal that the previous GM (chayka) signed, and therefore their current GM has no affiliation to. Its a calculated risk that I could see being absolutely massive for us. Playing alongside Auston he could be a f***ing player. I really don't think the price would be astronomical given the fact that AZ has been very clearly shifting towards future assets, and that contract is not a very good one on the books for a team that is desperate for money. I really don't think Keller will be with them at the start of the season next year, but that's just my guess.

It doesn’t really look much different from last year, only significant pieces missing are Hyman and Bogo. Both are good but not essential. Maybe Bunting and whoever steps into Bogo’s minutes will be fine. Kampf over Thornton is an obvious win as is Mrazek over Andersen. I’d assume a top 6 LW is on the way as well.
Team might be slightly better than last year or slightly worse. I don’t see a big difference at all.

*Purely looking at this team on paper*

I agree with you completely, I don't see the massive fuss... this is basically the same team. I don't see the massive downgrading that some users see. This isn't basketball where losing one starter effects your team a lot. This is a team sport and we have kept all of our stars.

Thornton is addition by Subtraction.
Bogosian is replaceable and Sandin provides our pp help which it def needs.
Hyman is difficult to replace but Matthews and Marner seem to score with anyone. Might be better for depth to put a weaker winger with them and make the bottom 6 better.
Andy and Mrzaek are a wash.

My take on their current roster as is:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
XXXX - Tavares - Nylander
Kerfoot - Kampf - Mikheyev
Anderson/Robertson - Brooks - Spezza/Simmonds

Reilly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott
Lilly

Campbel
Mrazek

Looks better than last season to me with proper role players

Hyman and Bogo were big losses, but Lilly and Sandin deserve a shot.

Thornton and Foligno were useless.

Also at least now we have a solid shutdown 3rd line with a true PKing center

Obviously we are still missing one more player

How Did Bunting get to be a first liner so fast

You guys are arguing over nothing.

It doesn't f***ing matter who we bring in.

If Matthews and Marner play like they are capable of in the playoffs, we go places. If they don't, we go no where. Period.
People don't seem to understand that Matthews/Marner/Nylander are all 25 or younger and still getting better. That alone should make our team improve

How

How Did Bunting get to be a first liner so fast
I am not necessarily saying he is a first line player, but he did play the majority of his minutes on the top 2 lines in AZ, and performed very well.

Having him in the top 6, even the top line is not completely out of the realm of posabilities

for example, Bryan Rust in PIT. Is he really a top line forward? Does he scream 1st liner to you? well he plays alongside Sid and Guentzel and does well. No reason to believe Bunting couldn't do the same

I like Robertson as much as the next guy ad he seems to have a good shot, but I'm not sure he's ready for playoff hockey if he makes it that far (this year)

Is anyone on this roster ready for playoff hockey? This team will be fine during the regular season but come playoffs, our core pieces don't all come to play.
