I know the only months that matter are after April of course (lol) - but this was eye-opening for me, at least.

The team often gets a bad rap for the Dec/Jan months, but over the last 5 years, here is their month by month record. The final column scrolling to the right being the most relevant here:

MTHRECORDPTSGPWLOTLPTS%
Oct19-15-54339191550.551
Nov38-9-6825338960.774
Dec26-15-65847261560.617
Jan31-12-56748311250.698
Feb31-12-26445311220.711
Mar30-21-56556302150.58
Apr30-10-66646301060.717
May3-1-2863120.667

We all know in Nov they're a God squad - but who knew April and Feb were above .700 too...?!?!

Notorious slow Octobers aside, we need to keep an eye on March this year to see if this core/coach has changed anything - and we can clinch the division. Thoughts??

I think December feels worse because November is usually where they dominate and go on a win streak, and then they fall back down to earth.

I'm surprised by February though. Last season in particular Feb/March felt rough.

No if anything last season December/January looked really rough as Samsonov was unplayable, Woll was hurt and we were relying on Martin Jones in net while up front our depth was really struggling. Samsonov eventually turned it around and then the infamous Ridly Greig incident happened mid-Feb which triggered a turnaround for the team as they finished the season strong and really picked up their scoring as well.

For reference this year's contribution are:

Oct = 6-4-1 .545 vs 5 yr .551 avg
Nov = 8-3-1 .666 vs 5 yr .774 avg
Dec = 9-6 .600 vs 5 yr .617 avg

Sooo, pretty close to normal - maybe not as hot as usual lately, but some pretty obvious injury issues so far too.

And here we are with the disappointing results of Jan:

Oct = 6-4-1 .545 vs 5 yr .551 avg
Nov = 8-3-1 .666 vs 5 yr .774 avg
Dec = 9-6 .600 vs 5 yr .617 avg
Jan = 7-6 .538 vs 5 yr .698 avg

Incredibly uncharacteristic Jan from this core in the last 5 years, but also a ton of significant injuries to top guys.

Berube style hockey is why the injuries…

Alright you frickin' malcontents.. here's the incredible month of Feb:

Oct=6-4-1 .545 vs 5 yr .551 avg
Nov=8-3-1 .666 vs 5 yr .774 avg
Dec = 9-6 .600 vs 5 yr .617 avg
Jan = 7-6 .538 vs 5 yr .698 avg
Feb = 7-1 .875 vs 5 yr .711 avg

Too bad we didn't play more through this hot month, but our boys did well at the 4 Nations too...

That said, March is usually our "go to sleep month", at only a .580 winning % in the last 5 yrs... Let's see what Craig and the Boyz can do this month to change that!

October we overperformed.
November we grossly underperformed.
December we slightly underperformed.
January we grossly underperformed.
February we grossly overperformed.

We need to keep up our winning ways and overperform in March. Can't afford to slip up and go barely above .500 like we have previously when we're competing for the division and the Panthers and Lightning are breathing down our necks.

100% this. While the team play has still been a bit meh, despite some glorious comeback victories and nail-biters we squeaked out - the goaltending..?!? The goalies have been outrageously good, to the point that you could see this team staying atop the division through March, barring a heater from one of the Florida teams.

Our record this time last year was 35-17-8 Compared to now at 37-20-2. 78 points after 60 games last year, Versus 76 after 59 this season. Virtually identical production to last year.
Yup. Crazy, considering the injuries and the lackluster overall play. Our goalies being stellar, and finding ways to win when ugly, have been this team's calling card so far. What's funny is, is that is a dynamic we haven't had before, which aligns well with typical playoff successes too.

I'm not sure how you arrived at your percentages. For example, in Oct we earned 13 points in 11 games, so the % is 13÷22=.591. You show .600.

I've redone all the numbers.

I assume by "5yr" you mean the 19-20 through 23-24 seasons.

This season to last 5:

Oct .591 to .536
Nov .708 to .727
Dec .600 to .656
Jan .538 to .681
Feb .875 to .675

Similar in whether a month was better or worse, but generally closer.

I literally just calculated the percentage of wins, per the established standard - to get their "winning percentage".

What you've got here is a points percentage. Not traditionally used, but still kinda cool to see.

The one thing you did point out to me though, is the Oct number. 6 wins out of 11 games is .545, NOT .600..!! I got that wrong mid message, so cheers.

March is the armpit of the twelve months.

There's almost never a holiday. It's cold and snowy and dark. And for some reason the Leafs always drop a lot of games this time of year.

They started off March like a lamb.

It's looking inevitable history is gonna repeat itself. The best indicator of future behaviour is past behaviour. I haven't seen anything to think this year will be any different than the previous five.

It's remarkable how predictable their patterns of behaviour are.

They have the regularity of a menstrual cycle. It's almost like there's a script they have to follow. If fans are becoming increasingly skeptical of them ever winning the cup it's only because they've seen this exact show before.

It ends the same every time.

How did you calculate "percentage of wins"?

I would say the points percentage is the standard one, particularly as that's the one shown in the NHL standings, and therefore the one more people are familiar with.
