Leafs powerplay simply unacceptable given the amount of money on it

A true PP QB is needed. Reilly is not the guy right now. They need a facilitator someone like Lane Hutson(shifty, playmaker, quick passer)

Matthews needs to be set up as the big gun. Knies and Tavares need to be netfront and BANG IN REBOUNDS and tip shots in. Should be no issue for those guys getting a shit ton of goals

It was better for a while with Nylander as the QB, but that left only Matthews as the one-timer threat.

Knies plays a better net front than JT, who tends to play off to the side looking for a tip or rebound rather than screening, and I don't think we need both.

Knies in the slot, Nylander and Matthews in the one-timer spots, and a bomber and QB at the points.

The Leafs playoff powerplay has reared its ugly head in the regular season. Maybe this is bizzaro season and the powerplay will appear in the playoffs while on the way to the Stan…….

Na I won’t jinx it.

I think the PP suffers when Rielly is on the ice and when MM overthinks it.

This is the root. Most predictable boring PP ever for years. They are full of themselves and don't even look like they think they have to work for it.

Berube when asked about McMann on the PP said he wanted two big bodies in front of the net, which makes me think, what took you so long (did JT have to be on PP1? when it stunk) and will you abandon it after JT returns if is working.

Marner and Rielly on the ice: 10.64 PP goals per 60 minutes
Marner and Rielly not on the ice: 0 PP goals per 60 minutes

Maybe if we weren't trying so hard to neuter offensively creativity at even strength, we'd have a bit more offensive creativity when it came time for the PP.

PP1 didn't stink. In fact, we've scored PP goals at a higher rate with Tavares on the ice than anybody else this year.

It’s fairly obvious that other team know that the Leafs doesn’t have a threat on point, so they can easily take away options on the halfboards. When Bäckström was in charge of the Capitals powerplay, other teams always had to be mindful of Carlsson/Green, giving space to Oshie or Ovi.

Hence, Leafs should either move Marner to Nylanders spot, or have him behind the goal… but there’s no bonafide PPQB to use so….

They could’ve used Klingberg eh

MM overthink when nobody moving and stay passive to find a way to create something with nothing. Marner get a pts on 81% of all leafs PP... Its the most in the NHL and the closest one is Kucherov who got a pts on 76% of tampa pp goal.

Leafs PP suffer of lack of puck moving, nothing else. Nylander staying passive in left of marner, Matthews staing passive of right of marner both just waiting to shoot, knies staying and JT/mcmann staying passive in front/side of the net and no movement. If the puck don't move, you will never created shooting lane and will be pretty easy to defend. The day they will start to be active and moved the puck quickly, result will start to change

The more I think about it the more I'm convinced they need to split them up.

For one thing if the pp continues to underperform it won't look so bad. Nobody would be able to say "Leafs powerplay simply unacceptable given the amount of money on it" anymore. Not only that but it just makes so much sense.

Adjust it for the players strengths.

Tavares as net front or bumper doesn't seem like the best use for him. They could easily use Knies and Domi for those spots. Tavares should be on the flank looking for a one-timer or to set up a play in the middle.

Rielly and Marner should be quarterbacking separate units.

Matthews and Nylander should also be split up. No need to have your best two shots on the same unit. Splitting them up means the opposition will have to make a choice who to play their best pk'ers against.

All of them on the same unit is overkill.

It’s amazing to have two great shooters on the same PP, what are you on about? Just have Marner and Nylander rotating left side/behind the goal to get some spinning done

Exactly what I was getting at. It's a lazy boring pp.

Well that would take effort. They seem to love to park.

I gave my reason why I think they should split the two best shooters up.

Because teams can't cover both adequately. But I'm open minded. So if you can tell me why they should keep them together despite them underperforming I'd be more than happy to listen.

The fact it isn't working should be reason alone to split them up but there might be some explanation I'm overlooking that justifies Berube doing the same thing as Keefe.

Separate, you get a combined total of 2 mins ice time for the two shooters. Together, you can get a combined 3 mins or so, and during that time the other team has to stop two shooters instead of just one, so they should each be more effective with their time as well.

Might be worth a shot but I wouldn't give it a long leash.

It’ll be interesting to see how Cooper uses Marner on the PP at the 4 Nations, if he uses him at all.
He may just keep him for the PK.

I don't understand what you mean here at all.

It doesn't matter. There's lots of good reasons to have them together. The best reason to separate them though is because having them together isn't working.

Doesn't have to be forever but at this point it can't do any harm.

Can't see him not getting a regular shift.

I imagine Cooper is smart enough to use one of the best PP players in the league on the PP.
Lots of great options though.
Not that Marner is a bad option but they may value his PK more given the options. I doubt he’ll be deployed as much as he is here.
Look forward to see how this will all go down.

Agree, and Tavares actually does really well in tight
