Carlyle said they'll have to earn each game. Scrivens got the start because he had a better camp (and probably benefitted from being in game shape for months before camp even started). I suspect that Reimer didn't necessarily earn this start based off practice but rather got the start because it's a back to back situation for the team. In many cases, the guy you start on opening night is your starter but in many cases, teams already have that figured out. The Leafs don't so who started on Saturday matters little. Each start will have to be earned based on how they play during games and during practice.
 
Yeah, Carlyle must be evaluating the team and he must be thinking, "What kind of mess did I get myself in?"

There's just not enough depth to win games against these big teams unless you get the talent. It has to start with Getzlaf in free agency. A MUST!

I said "whoever they start Saturday" as in the Ranger game this Saturday not "who started on Saturday" in Montreal.

When a goalie lets in 3 goals in 2 games and giving you a chance to win when the team has yet to score a 5 on 5 goal, that's your starter.

We are showcasing defencemen. It shouldn't be too hard to understand. If we send Fraser to AHL, he has to go to waivers and WILL be claimed for nothing. There are other motives than just plain winning. And Komisarek doesn't increase our likelihood of that either. And Fraser brings an element of toughness on the blueline that we don't have.

Let's see...Lupul-Bozak-Kessel played over 20 minutes each on Monday. MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin played more than Kadri's line. Kadri's line played more than McClement. That's what 1st, 2nd, 3rd line means. Thus, MacArthur DID get a promotion by going from 14 minutes TOI to 20 minutes. Unless Randy means to play Kessel less than anybody else, which would just be another poor decision.

Oh I'm so glad Carlyle is concerned with motives other than winning in a shortened season where wins mean everything. Such a great coach. "Sorry guy, you're the better defenseman, but I gotta showcase some players". Get real.
 
What the hell is wrong with you people? Its like 90% chickens with their heads cut off. This thread is unreadable.
 
Im guessing the thinking is, based on projected wins/losses, beating NYI is a lot "easier" than Pittsburgh. So, start the backup vs Pitt, the expected loss, and the starter vs NYI, an expected win. Last thing you wanna do is put Scrivens in vs Pitt, he gets lit up, and then Reimer goes in and stinks vs NYI and we lose both games. Playing the percentages lol.
 
Gutsy lineup changes. Not too sure I agree, but nothing hurts this year.

Expect the lines to be fully juggled by the 10:00 mark of the 1st, anyways.

Makes sense. Can even take the time to play around with the lines for this game. Find some good combinations to use against NYI to aim for a bounceback win.
 
I'm all for giving Kadri better linemates, but why would you break up Lupul-Kessel?

Why not roll with Lupul-Kadri-Kessel and Macarthur-Bozak-Komarov instead...

You don't think he thought about that before accepting the job? No matter how good or bad this team is the Leaf job will always be a top job in the NHL no matter what. It's going to take time but this team is on the right track.

Lupul needs a kickstart this year, it also gives Kadri an excellent playmaker someone to feed.

JVR and Grabo have gotten the Carlyle scorn early on. Lighting a fuse under them was a good coaching move.

I like the moves, maybe we surprise the Pens tonight and make it a game atleast.

Oh, sorry about that. But I still don't necessarily agree with that theory. Carlyle is looking to assign goalies on a reward basis. If Reimer doesn't play well tonight, then I agree with you. But if he does play well, then the starter on Saturday may be a matter of reward/circumstance. I would guess that the two week mark would probably provide more definitive answers.

Even-strength the 3 lines play about the same amount. The extra minutes usually come from special teams and late-game situations. Thus Lupul will still get first-line minutes by being on the 1st PP unit.

sorry you are having trouble keeping up. No I said you should wait to see who is with who at the end of the game and it may not even see game action at all. if it does, they will be back together before the game is over.
