Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose to Florida 3-2

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

This. I couldn't believe I actually watched the whole thing. We have seen the exact same sad movie for so many times.
Right! Look, they played hard, played physical, Stolarz was good... That sequence from Domi cranked the crowd up! But I didn't watch that and feel they deserved to win though. It was a close game where these guys didn't find a way to get it done.

It's just one season game against a good opponent, and on its own is probably a little bit encouraging, despite FLA missing three top guys, just with the compete level. But, again as you pointed out, they have competed in every playoff series they have played, save the 2nd round vs FLA (no need to clarify which season that took place) and still came up short in 8 of 9 rounds.

Imo, this Leafs roster wins last years first round based on the goalteding upgrade alone. But when I look at the potential first round opponents this season in FLA, TBL, OTT, NYR, CLB... I'd be planning on a first round exit.

We lost, yet again, to a true contender (defending champs).
Colour me surprised.

One day the head honchos of this franchise will acknowledge that we need to shake things up.
Untill that day, we will continue to dwell in the worst kind of hell. Too good to miss the PO, too bad to have a go at the Cup.
Stuck in neutral.
Not winning many when Domi is your best player. Seriously how does this guy only have 5 goals?

Other than a healthy Panthers team, they can beat any of the others if they are willing to play outside their comfort zone

Scott Laughton was garbage once again. Probably Max Domi's most impactful game. Matthews utterly useless again. If the guy is injured put him on the injured reserve already. Sick of seeing this team playing toothless hockey, especially against the short handed Panthers (with all their injuries). Joke of a team.

I only watched part of the game but it's a pretty low bar for Matthews to clear that he looked pretty engaged and carried the puck more than he has lately. But yeah, our best player is not good enough.

The Laughton add was just bad by design.

I could vent about the Leafs top line being absolutely "Meh" and that too with quite a few top players for panthers being out of the line up

but...

HF is back online thats the BIG NEWS here

Well. I actually think that JT and Nylander played pretty well.

The other half of that core 4 on the other hand? Yeah they were nowhere to be found. Especially Marner. (Quelle surprise).
As soon as Domi had that fight, I was worried we'd seen the last of Marner. He does tend to fade when the intensity heightens.

Both he and Matthews are still able to compete on the defensive side, but their ability to generate offence in games like this is famously absent.

meh they had a few nice plays together and shifts too, and even had that really nice sequence to open the scoring, but they only managed one as a duo tonight.

Could've used a goal from the 2nd best goal scorer in the league, though I won't harp too much because he was one of the better players this game

all i am saying is it would've been nice for the secondary duo to will us to a win. Would've inspired confidence that even if/when M&M no show in the playoffs, the other two can still make some noise.

The important thing is that 16/34 never get split up, even if we lose first round, as it's looking more and more likely, and then Marner bolts. Just keep them together to the bitter end, as long as humanly possible. Then we're all winners in the bigger sense.

it was just a typical playoff game

matthews and marner no show with the top pairing and shutdown c on them at EV, they then crap the bed on the pp really hard, and the cherry on top is get scored on during a PK

all the while Nylander and Tavares just aren't good enough against the second pairs and lines to make up for their other two co-stars disappearing acts.

add onto that, we also were on the wrong side of goaltending. Stolarz was not bad at all, but he made one less save than Bob did, which is something we end up saying every game 7 too lol.

as a litmus test, this went about as bad as it could've, id have taken a 6-4 loss at least to show we could score on these guys.

Let's look on the bright side, we only have 10 more years of these humiliation rituals and then we can rebuild.

Laughton not getting that puck out on the PK was brutal like yikes!
Biggest play in the game. He had to get it out there and you knew inevitably that they would score.
Florida is a good team, Leafs were right there with them.
Matthews isn’t right, that’s a concern. Worse I’ve seen him play, easily the best game I’ve seen Domi play. Nylander even had a couple hits, crowd had a good chuckle there.

Looking forward to the rematch in early April.

Nylander and Tavares play style dont gel inspite of the world knowing that he won’t split them up and Batman and robin disappear as a line when playoff hoccey starts and he won’t split them either how do we expect different results the only goal we scored in game 7 was Matthew’s with nylander and bertuzzi I think I could make a better line up then chief
