Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose to Canucks 3-0

This team just came off winning 5 in a row and are first in their division. Yes, they will likely lose games here and there, maybe even two in a row again (imagine the horror). But I think people can step back from the ledge. They aren't going to go into a free fall. Are all 11 Vegas fans losing their minds because they just got shutout by the Islanders? Losses happen.
They barely beat NYI x2, Boston and Philly x2 by just showing up. Is it too much to ask to compete against two better teams? Vancouver played Friday night and their plane was delayed getting here and you were coming off a roasting two nights ago by the Canes. And that is the effort you give at home on a Saturday night on HNIC? It is strange how you can predict the future so well but you cannot see the warts on this team until it is too late.

It’s scary thinking about giving up a lot at the TDL.
They’re not getting a number 1 D and will take their chances with Tanev and McCabe as the work horses. That’s much better than they’ve ever had, but I’m not convinced it’s good enough.
We don’t know if the top end talent has the skill or determination to win.
The bottom end is mediocre.

Goaltending looks good.
I have confidence in the middle guys, McMann, Knies, Patches, Domi
Domi, Rielly, and Kampf are a waste of cap space at this point.

long overdue

Could it be that he is just dumb? He sure does not come across as intelligent.
He should at least understand the game. Just because he was sweating and legs were burning doesn’t mean it was a good effort and should be able to recognize that.

Even if feels that way, he had to hear the boos, and that’s where self awareness has to come in to play.

Domi, Rielly, and Kampf are a waste of cap space at this point.
I would have no problem trading any of them, but Domi showed up in the playoffs. I don’t think he’ll ever be a major contributor on a Cup winning team, but he’s at least usable with the Leafs.

IDK. That Marner quote is seriously making me re-evaluate spending my time watching this team. I always felt like us fans cared more than the team, but that quote pissed me the hell off.

Whatever identity Berube has tried to instill into this team, over the last month or so it has slowly come undone and the same old Leafs have come back. Players running the show, getting to pick their linemates, getting to pick when they feel like playing, and not being held accountable through ice time or any other means that we can see.

From November through Jan the team played with so much physicality, grit, structure, and had solid goaltending they looked legit. Since right before the xmas break when Berube allowed the excuse of them being tired to come out in the media they've given half efforts every game.

Matthews no where close to a 13M player
Nylander MIA
Rielly MIA

Every single fan saw game 7 Leafs last night and they were all ok with it.
Some fans were booing last night.

i mean he was tied for first with 4 points, and had more points than mitch and JT.
That's why you don't just look at raw points. He had a decent game 2 because Matthews took over, but his other 2 points were secondary assists off a faceoff win and a missed shot. This while eating up all of the prime offensive opportunities because he had to be MASSIVELY sheltered (93.1% offensive zone starts, playing pretty exclusively with a superstar). Meanwhile, he still somehow managed to put up absolutely horrific defensive results (worst forward on the team, and worst on-ice xGA/60 of any Leaf forward in the Matthews era playoffs outside of the 2 games Kadri played in 2018-2019 prior to his suspension), and took stupid penalties (most on the team).

I'll venture a guess and say that Mitch Marner understands hockey better than anyone on this board. His issue is that he's not good in front of a microphone. Never has been, maybe never will be. I could care less what athletes or coaches say after a game.

To be fair, this pretty well sums up Domi's career prior to coming to Toronto. He hasn't played for half a dozen teams by accident.

Putting the bullseye on himself and removing it from the rest of the team like a true leader.
You'd hope the two highest paid guys would have stepped up and shown their leadership.

Will be interesting to see if Oettinger plays on Tuesday after gifting the Leafs their last win against a good team.
Like Vasi, the Leafs seem to have Oettinger's number. Their record against Dallas, and Oettinger, is bizarrely good. Doesn't make a lot of sense given how good the guy is.

I'm well aware of the flaws on the team, but I'm no more inclined to write them off after 2 losses than I would be to crown them champions after beating NYI and Philly (who are two legitimately bad teams). My entire premise this season is that the Leafs have better coaching, defense and goaltending and, maybe even more importantly, the rest of the Eastern conference has taken a step back. Flaws and all, this season will probably still be the Leafs' best chance to win.

The difference between Marner’s comments (“I think we’re playing well, I really do!”) compared to Tanev’s (“they outworked us, out competed us, that’s why they won”) are incredibly telling. Marner honestly suffering from a severe case of Joe Thorntonitis. Do the players not talk to each other after the game? How can there be such a massive disconnect?

he’s been in the league a long time and comments like that tell us he doesn’t get it.

Wonder how different this game would have went if Rielly's early shot off the bar goes in.

I love the Toronto Maple Leafs, however, I REALLY HATE this collection of players they have now.

There will likely never be another team like the Montreal Canadians of 1976-1977! So, why are our core players paid like they win 90% of their regular season games, and have actually won more than 1 playoff round as well as the Stanley Cup?

This makes no sense to me. What does make sense is that MLSE is truly happy to have the income from jersey sales, and the highest ticket prices in the NHL.

The only way anything will change is if we fans STOP buying Leaf merchandise, and STOP buying tickets to see our Leafs, especially home games!

We Leaf fans are all SUCKERS to keep handing over are hard earned money to MLSE! FFS, these overpaid Leaf players make more money in one hockey shift than I get from my pension in a month.

Not all teammates talk to each other, especially with the kind of leadership group they have in the dressing room.

Incompetence <> Indifference , you're confusing the two.

The issue is he said the exact opposite of what a leader should say. Literally 180 degrees opposite.
