Precisely. They only engage in these junevile tactics because the refs allow it and they believe it gives them an edge. In the grand scheme of things it's not particularly courageous when a guy like Maroon double teams a player or Foote grabs a guy from behind in a blowout game. It reflects poorly on the league, players and team. What makes all this in between play nonsense acceptable in hockey, but not in football Aussie rules football, rugby or any other sport?
This allows fans of other sports to wonder why the NHL allows players to act in ways that would send you to prison if done in the streets. Prevents many parents from encouraging their kids get into hockey.
Guys are forced to stand up for themselves, that's what is needed dealing with bullies and cowards. Players like Clifford and Simmonds are engaged because the league has refused to protect their players. This lack of protection is why Kadri was suspended twice when the refs wouldn't reign in the dirty Bruins.
This also reflects on Cooper as a Coach too tbh. As a man who can't control his players. Docile and submissive to their actions, probably encouraging it.
Look at what Sutter did when he took over the Flames. He wants pests in Matthew T and Lucic, but he doesn't want goons and fools. He has his players under control as they respect him.
if the refs take one clown out of the scrum and gives them a penalty, especially when they are punching a player in the back of the head as was done to Bunting last night, it would put an end to this immature behavior. Otherwise, teams need to stock up on such players and meet them in the alley. Only out of necessity.
You'd think after so many decades the NHL would get it right and become more of a global sport in the process and not remain on the fringes outside of Canada and a few U.S markets.
