I'm not going to blame the new guys, they basically landed and played hockey with a new team and system, in elevated territory at that. Avs aren't as impressive on the road, in far worse, they feast on their home ice advantage.

As it were, the driftwood are Domi and Holmberg in particular. If I am Domi I just say "Im going to get physically involved every game". He needs to play with an edge and to obtain that edge he needs to have some animosity. We don't need a reincarnation of his dad, but if he can't figure it out, their positions have to be replaced in the offseason its that simple. He has his contract and he's a good enough guy to fit in somewhere else if he can't figure it out.

Once Tanev returns we will see what we have with Reilly, Carlo is as reliable a mate as he will get and the coach needs to find the Reilly we once all saw. I thought this guy was headed for #1 D Man, perennial all star early in his career. He needs to find a way. If its his weight, do some healthy intermittent fasting on off days. Get lighter but maintain strength with a high protein diet. He needs to be confident and trust in his body. He often seems uncomfortable retrieving pucks.

I have to think that Tanev/McCabe, Reilly/Carlo, Benoit/OEL should be one of the strongest backends in the league. So what's the problem? Wingers too soft on pucks? Stars floating and looking to get the game into a track meet and they keep losing (a repeated bad habit with some of these guys...).

Their identity should be to get a lead, tighten the game down and capitalize on opponents mistakes. They need to win the 50/50 puck battles and support each other in their end. Make the goalies life easy and he will make it easier for the team.

Matthews to me remains the guy you build around and I've felt this since about his third or fourth year in the league where he was becoming a stellar defensive player.. Knies and McMann are keepers in this effort and when Nylander cares to play, he is a crucial player too. Everyone else up front would have to earn their place on my team every season.

I thought Carlo got better as the game went on, we have to give Laughton more time but I just don’t see what he brings to the team. He’s not good offensively, not good defensively, doesn’t look fast.

The real problem tonight was the atrocious coverage in our zone. Myers and Benoit were awful. Rielly is beyond abysmal. He is so bad for a $7 million player it defies description. But some of the blame lied with the forwards in our zone. Domi is useless. Kampf for a guy who doesn’t offer offence is so bad defensively

We need Tanev back so bad.

Every player does the same thing, defers to their agent, it's what they get paid to do.

Deferring to a normal agent makes sense, you didn’t really hear too much about the Matthews/Nylander negotiations until we had a rough number a week before the ink dried. Ferris is to agents what McAuley is to refs, a guy who should be a behind the scenes facilitator inexplicably decides he needs to be the star of the show. At some point you have to say “look, get me a good deal but come on man I have to live in this city after I hang them up”.

Interesting thing here, I just looked up his client list and it was a lot smaller than I expected. The main interesting thing is we've had a number of his clients here but they've all left...
Kadri
Bogosian
Edmundson

Disappointing that Bennett is also a client of his.

Exactly. Ferris is a bad faith negotiator

Definitely concerning. I think it's our offense if I'm not mistaken, correct? Our D and goaltending have been above average, no?
GAA: 2.96 (12th)
GFA: 3.21 (10th)

Stats from ESPN
That’s weird although GAA contains empty netter which we give a lot of

Tough game to watch.

You can tell everyone is still rattled.

Considering Laughton and Carlo just got off a plane, was fine with what I saw.

Still didnt understand why Benoit and Myers were paired, particularly against a powerhouse like Colorado.

McCabe-Benoit and OEL-Myers would have been a much more balanced set on defence.

Not rattled, not happy, but not surprised.

Missing Tanev, but also they have to do it themselves.

Matthews and Marner need to be broken up. It’s just mind boggling that this continues to be the only combination that doesn’t change, and it’s the one that needs to change the most.

I’m not upset that Marner was asked to waive. I hope it’s a wake up call for him that he’s not going to write himself a cheque.

It’s going to get real very quickly here if this team fails again in the playoffs.

The Avalanche have set the template for winning a championship and still turning over your roster, including turning your back on a core piece because they want too much money.

The mold has been set. Now let’s see what follows.

Kadri never stiffed us and wouldn’t have

Holmberg wasn’t bad

I would already rather Rantanen on the team over Marner, if Marner wants to screw around in negotiations again. Like.. why can't he just sign a damn deal as easily as Rantanen did?

you win some you lose some, all that matters if the playoffs. That was a beatdown though.
To a certain degree I agree with you Dave but I'd like to see a bit more effort and heart before they get into the playoffs

Playing like crap then just turning it on is bloody difficult to do

I've missed a lot of this and the past couple seasons, but every time I tune in, the Leafs are getting pumped. Tonight was no exception, watched the first and last 10 minutes and they clearly were the 2nd best team. The only surprise is that they were in a position to fight for 1st in the division, obviously they have zero chance and blew their load too early while getting lucky.

Can't wait for year number 1231231 of sucking ass in the playoffs.

Tough time to take a penalty.

Does anyone else think legitimately, if they were hired as the GM in 2018, the Leafs would've won more playoff rounds?

Because I do.
For sure, they would do be in the midst of the NHLs longest consecutive Cup run if I were GM.

The big 4 got pretty much all the points but they still got manhandled. It was never going to work Dubas.

Carlo led the team in TOI and was a +/- 0

Other notables in +/-:
Tavares -3
Nylander -3
Robertson -2
Laughton -2
Rielly -2
Domi -1
McMann -1
Benoit -1
Myers -1
Stolarz .844 sv%

That's a rough game for the 2nd line especially considering the 1st line had the MacKinnon assignment. Encouraging game from Carlo imo.
Thought second line was ok. Got tagged for two ENG goals, and the one goal on a late line change.
