Feels like nothing will ever change with this core. Marner is not a winner or a leader, and certainly not a man.

Can't wait for him to win the Smythe and multiple cups whereever he ends up.

I only saw the first and part of the second but it was an awful game by us. Again though, we did this last year as well. First 10 games are a write off. If they are playing like this at game 20 then I think we have a reason to be concerned and IMO management needs to do something.

For all the anti spreadsheet/expected goals guys

The stats match the eye test

These stats make you believe there’s a huge chasm between the two teams, but in reality, they could have lost 3-2, 4-2 with an EN goal.

Truly pathetic effort last night. The boys absolutely hung Sammy out to dry. It should have been 10-bagel for the knights. What an absolute waste of good goaltending. I really hope you east coasters didn't stay up to watch that shit.

Clearly the boys were thinking about their plans for the night, nursing a hangover from the night prior, or both. Getting to stay in Veggy until Wednesday after arriving on Saturday was always a scheduled green light. I know last night was painful for those who watched, but hopefully that effort was because they are having too much fun in Vegas.

I know we all think these guys are professional's and that they should be on the ball all the time, but being in Vegas from Saturday night to Wednesday was always going to be a time for these guys. We obviously took the bad from it last night, but I firmly believe a trip like this will bring the group closer in the end. You gotta have fun as a team if you want to win it all. Unfortunately this is just the byproduct of playing guilty sometimes.

On to the next one

Then where are our cups? You can play that game forever.

Expected goals are a reflective model, not a predictive model.

How well or how poor did the team play in line with or despite real results. Last nights game is a perfect example.

Also, by making a strawman argument you are completely ignoring that hockey, more than any other sport in the world, has a ton on randomness and chance.

It is a rare night that a stinker is cause for great optimism, but as the Leafs were being handed their $4.99 buffet lunch by the Knights, Samsonov was looking like the kind of goalie who can and will steal games the team has no business winning.

That we were in that one last night going into the 3rd was pretty much the Sammy show.

Leaf fans who stayed up to watch this atrocity are the true star of this game.
I stayed up to watch this game! At the beginning of the 3rd, I said to myself this isn't worth watching anymore, as there was an obvious lack of effort to begin the period once again.

Instead of shutting down the internet feed and going to bed, I continued to watch not wanting to miss a 4-3 comeback win. Boy was I wrong! This team failed to start playing hockey at the beginning of all 3 periods.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas! What an embarrassment IMHO.

Your last sentence, think it through and you might actually be on to something.

Good news:

- Early on goaltending is better than expected
- Tavares and Nylander have clicked early
- Mete seems serviceable as a #7D
- Winning record despite poor play overall
- Matthews and Marner have been our worst players, but they’ll come around
- Haven’t had our full 6 D play, but early defensive results are positive

Bad news:

- Bottom 6 is still a mess
- Injuries

Just watching the highlights. Samsonov looked to of played pretty damn good. Hope he keeps it up.

The 1st line really needs to get it going.

Otherwise not to great a game. Glad Tavares wasn't seriously hurt.

Get back at it on Thursday and start going on a run. Beatable teams coming up. They just have to be ready to go from puck drop.

Samsonov is playing for his next contract. He'll likely be gone to a better team next season! Too bad our skaters are letting him down and letting him know that they could care less about supporting him!

Samsonov and Second line were the only ones who appeared to be trying last night.

Defense was brutal.

Matthews and Marner need to produce. They’re taking up like a quarter of the cap. 2 goals isn’t good enough.

The bottom 6 is makes me want to quit watching hockey.

I was right there with you man. It was not a boring game at least, Vegas had chances on almost every play and it was worth it to see how good Samsonov could be! Yes, I am lying to myself.

That was a terrible game to watch. If it wasn’t for Samsonov we would have been blown out.
I get we hit some posts and there were 2-3 times where myself or broadcasters couldn‘t believe they didn’t bury the chances but we were seriously outplayed.

Our D is too small to deal with bigger players and we are going to get severely exposed in the playoffs.

Here we are again. After a better showing against Winnipeg and what we all thought was a great stepping stone, we are completely flat, disinterested, and showing very obvious signs of substantial mental immaturity - lack of compete, lack of readiness (to start periods), and the big guns posting goose-eggs again. Doesn't appear to be a team with contending aspirations.

I think this is the bigger problem than everyone dissecting the quality of the team.

RFA ... if he keeps this up he'll be retained, even at the cost of other positions.

Then they'll just have to hope one or both of Sandin/Liljegren take the next steps.

Forwards are fine, except of course cohesion/chemistry on the bottom 6.
Bunting can be replaced, and hopefully Knies can play pro.

I've read this sentiment several times so far this season. It's just another excuse for a poorly run organization.

Yes, they could have finished 3-2, scoring 40% of the game's goals, which isn't reflected in the 39% xG% for... reasons?

They also could have lost 4-1 without the ENG if they hadn't gotten lucky on the cheap review of Kessel's goal.

This is not a popular opinion with many other Leafs fans, however it needs to be said once again... Rielly IS NOT a true number 1 defense man. He is an average number 2 at best. I agree, I think he is an ideal number 3 on a 2nd pairing.

He is a great skater but doesn't have much else to offer to be a true number 1. No point shot, not toughness in front of our net, and sometimes his decision making is very flawed. I sometimes question his hockey IQ.

JMHO.

I find he is lacking in that off speed, slow it down gear shift that can settle down momentum in his own zone. Always thought he needed that extra bit of Kaberle control to be a true number one to go with his other abilities. Usually those alpha dog defenseman are able to grab the puck and the opposition peels off because they know it’s time to regroup.

He also has a muffin shot and no one cares about him as a decoy or as a trigger man.

He’s not a great puck distributor or at walking the line to pull seams out on coverage.
