Leafs had too many chances to score. It just didnt go our way tonight. MTL didn't out work us. Leafs just hit too many posts on prime opportunities.

I'm not worried about this loss. Leafs cant win them all. Freddy played well once again. Tavares looks poised to break out in a big way.

Once the Tavares line takes off with a healthy roster there will be no stopping the Leafs.

Overall leafs played well enough to win, some bad luck, can’t win them all. They’ll come out hard against the sens, all good.

Definitely looking forward to Robertson and Thornton’s return though. Vesey and Engvall not good enough. I also get why I’m hearing rumours of leafs looking for a top 6 player. Nobody seems to be gelling with Nylander and JT, we need someone there, Simmonds was the closest.

Taking Toronto/Montreal/Tampa/Carolina out of the equation:

Battle of the "meh" teams

Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg combined record against the Stars last year: 6-2-2 Stars went on a good run in the playoffs. Doesn't mean they'd even make it there again.
Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg combined record against the Florida last year: 4-1 Still think Cats are a mirage.
Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg combined record against the Jackets last year: 5-1 Jackets struggled against West Canada.

North meh vs Central meh last year:

15-4-2

I'm starting to change my mind. North may actually be solidly second.

Tampa is the best team easily
Carolina is the 2nd best team out of both divisions
Columbus punted us from the play in round and have had solid playoff success over the last few seasons
Florida looks much better and were pushing us when the regular season was cancelled
Dallas made the finals last season

Yeah, it ain't that close alright

When they skate and fly they are exciting. They are not built for these low scoring games. They are also boring. They can not survive in a physical contest. Still don't think they are a playoff team but they certainly can be exiting when they are firing. Take off the handcuffs and ankle bracelets. Let these guys do what they were born to do win high scoring games. Most teams can out hit them but can't outskate them.

Carolina being the 2nd best team out of both divisions is highly debatable
and re: Columbus - a best of 5 play-in round after months inactivity is indicative of very little and Columbus has shed too many quality players for past playoff success to be particularly relevant

If you want to keep Nylander long term, it is time to demote him to third line and tell him to earn his way back up the lineup. If you want to trade him and get maximum value, put him up on the 1st line and pump his stats till you find the right buyer to overpay.
Letting him float through the season on line 2 with out any consequences is a recipe for disaster. Either fix his floating now, or sell high.

Just finished the game.....eugh, shoot the friggin puck.

Mikhaev also isn't good enough for the 2nd line at all but who do you put there right now?

One thing I’ll say is this. Morgan Rielly is absolutely NOT a number one dman. Never has been and never will be. Yeah he had a 70 point season, but he was putting pucks on a platter for Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Tavares. Everyone and their grandmother can do that. If I was Dubas I’d strongly look at moving this guy and seeing what I can get for him. We’ve made every other dman we’ve brought in a problem but maybe it’s time to look at our own dman. Leafs could get a good asset or two back for Rielly and it’s definitely gotta be something that’s considered given that he’s probably gonna want big money on a long term deal. And that’s where I say absolutely not. A dman that plays a two way style but more on the defensive side and one that actually possesses a slap shot and not a muffin would be much better. Anyone who knows hockey knows Rielly is not a number one dman, if you think he is, you’re a big time homer and need a reality check, because other fan bases know that he’s not. Trade this guy sooner rather than later and bring in an actual presence. Brodie is so much better than Rielly it’s not even funny.

Highly debatable? They have qualified and won multiple playoff rounds coming out of the Metro

They have been better than EVERY North team over recent seasons and it isn't even close

Columbus beat us and had a vary comparable record with a pretty similar team last season, that's a fact

They have played well, and have closed out a few one goal games.

I’ve been getting crucified for a much tamer version of this opinion. I think we need to find a way to play him a little lower in the lineup and try to insulate him a bit. He’s really struggling in the top role.

They have allowed 5 goals in their last 4 games. And have 3 wins in that time frame. Should have 4 wins. They can play low scoring games, they couldn’t score tonight. They had plenty of opportunities to bury the game early on and could not convert. They are still the better team

They NEEDED to capitalize on the chances in the first. Should have had 3-4 goals, and instead missed the net and hit the post a bunch of times. Knew it was going to bite them.

That's exactly why we lost, but honestly it also had a lot do with luck. We had 2 posts in about 5 seconds for example and Auston normally scores this chances. Also had the feeling those missed chances will bite them and we'll lose in the end.

Uh huh. Move muzzin the tire fire up. Great thinking

The only problem with that is we’ve seen how far that brand of hockey takes you in the playoffs.

This one should have been done and dusted in the first 20 really, should have been 3 or 4 goals up.

Once it got into the 3rd still at 1-0, I think it gave them some belief and Leafs had this impeding feeling of 'it's not our night boys'.

Just have to wear it. Shit happens.
