I guess….

2:44 left, puck is cleared out of Ottawa zone in the air, goes into the Leafs neutral zone.
Nylander is last man back.

2:37 left, Nylander passes it off to Tavares for zone entry.
Marner is circling around the far side neutral zone face-off dot.
Jarnkrok is entering the zone on the far side, will be unmarked because nobody is even looking at him.

2:35 left. Tavares passes the puck to Nylander at the near hash marks.
Jarnkrok is skating to the goal line, unmarked.
If the puck makes it to him, he can swing it back to the point and have possession in the zone.

2:34 left.
Nylander stops up and is immediately stripped of the puck.

2:27 left.

Tkachuck just scored to make it 4-2

calgary would be smart to target that leaf’s 1st with a retained tanev
I sure hope they aren’t stupid enough to think this team is a contender and trade away our first.
This team is in serious need of a retool if we want to win a cup. If we want to continue to tread water and make the playoffs every year but go out in the first round then sure sign Willy to 8X11 but if you want to win retool must happen

There is zero chance the Leafs will keep their first round pick. 1,000% chance it is traded.

I'm not so pissed about not scoring more goals; we just didn't have that puck luck.

The play in our own end, however, was nothing short of diabolical. Blown coverage and hail Mary passes all night.

Jones was ok in the net; not great not bad. Sure, with elite goaltending, we might have won it. You know what else might have won it?. Something better than a lifeless effort in our own zone.

These guys better be in a snarly mood when they hit Columbus on Friday.

Well, as it turns out, it's quite difficult to build anything around them because of how much of the cap they take. Constantly chopping and changing and still with big holes with D and now the goalie possibly as well.

It's a very NBA-esque way of building a team. Which is why I feel that it is a very star-driven, individual-based way for a team to operate. Of course, you need good players, but it seems as if it comes at the expense of a greater team identity and cohesion.
Major difference between the NBA and NHL. In the NHL you can only win as a team... NBA as you say is star driven and one or two guys can make all the difference.

Fair point about the ability to build team depth with the lack of cap space. I don't blame Dubas on that alone, the impact of those signings were projected against an ever-growing cap. The pandemic screwed the team... still, knowing that, no adjustment was made. It was a stubborn approach that is yet to work. Tre has some big decisions ahead.

Agreed, if anyone thinks Nylander is playing that the level he was before Sweden they are kidding themselves. He’s playing more like a 80 point player ( which he is).
100%

Still a good player. That early season display is not who he is, it is who he could be... clearly he was playing with an elevated passion, for his home country. Would appear the cup and NHL money do not motivate him in the same way.

I still want him on the team, and I guess one of the other core would have to be moved. Unfortunate.

Why Marner?

Nylander showed again tonight why he is not in the same stratosphere as Marner.
2 goals against were directly off Nylander gaffes.

He's great offensively, but has no brains out there and doesn't make any sort of defensive effort.

It's absolutely infuriating to watch someone with that body build and skillset, just waste it completely.
Fair. If the money is going to be about the same, you keep Marner 100% of the time. If there are significant savings to be had by keeping Nylander over Marner, you do that. The money is the decision maker imo.

Significant savings = enough savings to be able to invest in another player that has an impact. So, is that extra money to help bring in a bigger piece, or enough to pay for a 4th liner? TBD.

Long time member, don't post much...Simply frustrating..same thing every game, they try for a bit get the lead, sit back allow the other team to take control and scramble to try and tie it. I just don't understand why Keefe is still the coach.

Go ahead, fire the coach, it won't make any difference. For whatever reasons, this team just doesn't have the 'it' factor. As individuals I don't have much that is bad to say about the players we've seen over the past few years, but last season's playoffs - after the additions that were made - proved to me that this core just doesn't have 'it'. I don't know why. But a team that has aspirations of fighting for a Cup does not put up these continuing efforts against bad teams, they just don't. And, we're past the point of thinking they'll develop the thick skin necessary to win it all. They just won't.

Tear it down.

January is a tough month. Twice as many road games.
This will probably be the make it or break it as far as playoffs go. If they end the month sitting on the outside, I could imagine we will be hearing the 18 wheeler firing up its engines. This team, other than the first playoff year, have not had to battle to get into the playoffs... just based off history and battling to win in tough situations, that might not go so well.

These points go together.

I don't have any interest in this thread blaming or mentioning names because that just derails the thread. But I do think from the onset (Tavares signing) that it's been a flawed way to build a team.

And as you said, it turned out to be a very stubborn and prideful project, especially when your manager makes claims about forcing it to work. Or that the president just expects everything to fall into place.

I agree. In fact I’ve stated the window is closed for competing for a cup. 2025/26 is when the window opens back up for this team. Dubas left treliving minimal assets and cap space that fixing the defence can’t be done by the trade deadline. This will be a 1.5 yr project in hopes of 2025/26 season as the season to start competing for a cup
