GDT: Leafs @ Islanders 1/11/24 7PM

True, but he still is the captain and probably has a big influence as a leader in the locker room and a vet to mentor the guys. Moreover, they don’t really have someone behind him rn

You don’t want to throw any of fantili, Johnson or sillinger to the wolves with 1st line duty. We’ve seen bedard do it and whilst offensively he’s been dynamite, he’s been awful defensively and one only hopes he doesn’t develop bad habits from it. Those guys also just don’t look ready to be up for that task so I think keeping Jenner makes the most sense on all front for them

I think Jenner maybe next year being dealt would make more sense from a business standpoint

Not sure I get why everyone is falling over themselves for Nicky?

You can't judge anyone against the Sharks. Sure, given time and space he can snipe one, but against real NHL teams mostly what stands out to me is his weakness. He is pretty easy to dominate physically, and he does turn the puck over a lot.

I also feel he will be useless come playoff time. Nice player, but not what we need to succeed imo. I mean, hopefully I am wrong but I haven't seen anything that would change my mind (so far). We need guys who play a heavier game, yet still bring some skill to the table, or at least play some clean minutes and not make it easy on the opponent.

Our playoff problem has been lack of generating goals, not sniping. Not sure Nick can help with the former.

In fact, he reminds me of cast-offs of the past like Johnsson or Kappanen. Guys who people here were drooling over who went on to do nothing on other teams.

Regardless, if he is going to play, I hope he is awesome. If he does get traded, I hope he brings back pieces that help us win. Do not see him as a difference maker right now, and this team is trying to win right now. Maybe some bad timing for him, and I think most on here would agree he is even behind the two guys you mention come next fall.

He has much more potential long term then, McMann or Gregor and arguably Holmberg, he's finally healthy so let the kid play, give him the confidence and opportunity to succeed

To me this year one of the differences is the impact our next wave of young players are making. Especially Knies, Liljegren, and Woll, but also Robertson, Holmberg, and Gregor.

There's also a few older but relatively inexperienced guys like Benoit, Lagesson, and McMann that are contributing.

Okay, sure, I have no problem with him playing.

I guess I don't see much potential in him to be an impact player for us. As mentioned, we have sniping covered. So what else does he bring?

At least McMann and Holmberg fill a need. Can play through physical play.

I wouldn't at all be surprised to learn he's being showcased/shopped because I don't see anything good regarding Keefe commenting about the team knowing where he's at and then subsequently making him a healthy scratch from time-to-time. Unfortunately, not playing him more often - whatever the reason is for that - can't be doing all that much for any trade value he might muster either.

Dman wise, boqvist peeke bean are the only ones I’d even touch and tbh none move the needle too much, we need a bonafide top 4rhd and maybe a second pairing LHD too, I’d like to run:
Rielly - Brodie
X - Liljegren
McCabe-Benoit
Gio

I’d love to replace Brodie now, but I doubt that happens but if not now then next year we need to replace him as he’s fallen off the last 2 years.

really don't think brodie or gio should be in the lineup as regulars

with brodie and gio as players who can fill in might be better.
