Confirmed with Link: Leafs have acquired D Giordano (50% retained) and F Blackwell for 2nd, 2nd, 3rd | Part II

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
For one, he's 38., not 39, three years removed from being the winner of the Norris trophy. His acquisition, is far better than Braun and Motte would be. As has been stated repeatedly, he's looking to sign here for next year, so this really isn't a pure rental situation either.

It's a solid deal, particularly given the overpays at the deadline.
My only criticism is I wish he brought Soucy with him.

Giordano is going to help stabilize a Leafs defense with his veteran presence but 2 X 2nds is a steep price.

Ilya Lyubushkin also cost the Leafs a conditional 2nd,

However 3 X 2nd round picks for the next 3 years for a pair of Dman on expiring contracts is a steep price to pay unless this works out this year.

However it is a big step up from 1st and 2 X 4ths for Foligno last year in terms of expected impact on the Leafs. IMO

If we neither win, nor extend these guys, it's a bad deal.

If we either win, or extend these guys, it's a good deal.

If we do well in the playoffs this is a great deal, if not it's bad but at least we tried, hard to argue that we shouldn't have tried - or that we should have acquired only bargains

Force equals mass times mass acceleration.
I was a bean pole when I played defense and known as one of the hardest and best hitters in the league.
I made the superstar of the league cry because he could never get past me hahahaha
He almost made it one time but the hip check sprawled him out Hahaha
Yup. Force, but technique is also key.

It's not just pure physics like the poster was saying.

I like this deal, leafs didnt pay a high price for a guy who can bring stability. The one thing i really like if that deal its giordani can get instant chemistry with brodie, with 20 games remaining its pretty huge.

Just muzzin first playoff as a leafs, he was not as good than year 2 or 3

That perhaps you should stop talking in absolutes? Any player could knock any other player into next week.

Momentum and timing is a thing.

I think we all understand life is not binary... an outlier does not trump what happens 99% of the time.

I have a lower center of gravity then you do. You are right, physics dont lie.

Ahh gotcha, you will fall to the ice quicker... ;)

there is a reason why in MMA / Boxing they have weight classes ... there is an advantage to size in every contact sport. there are outliers but as a rule, size matters...

I’m not trying to say anyone is right or wrong here, but this post made me think of this and it’s always fun.

I really don't want to be that guy who talks about size but more small forwards will not help us compete better in playoff hockey. When I read Blackwells bio, Nic Petan popped into my head and I can't get that image of Nic Petan version 2.0 out of my head.
He is not like Petan.

Gimme a 5'9 guy that plays big and is relentless on the forecheck over a guy like 6'2 Ritchie who Is lazy all day.

Remember in the playoffs against Boston when Trevor Moore and Tyler Ennis put Chara on his ass and drove him nuts the whole series? Small guys can do some damage in the playoffs too.

Luv the comments ..'if it works out good deal, if it doesn't bad deal', expert analysis. It's apparent in recent years GM's are taking risks with draft picks and prospects to give them the best chance to win the cup, only 1 team will win so it's a gamble. Most teams in contention are typically drafting 20-32 in first round, would rather risk the 1st rounder or 2nd rounder for a better chance to win now...why hold those picks when you are clearly a contender with a solid team, what will the 1st rounder/2nd rounder give you today to help win now...nothing. And you can always regain those picks with moves down the road. Go for it now when you have the chance.

If Gio can play steady top 4 minutes I'll be pleased. His age scares me but we'll see how it goes. Excited to see Gio and Blackwell in the game tomorrow. Not super excited for these black jerseys, though.

That's a bit of a weird flip from "It cost a conditional 2nd to get rid of Ritchie's contract".

Excited to have Giordano, and I always love seeing Toronto-area players enthused coming to the team.

I will temper my expectations on just how good he will be for us however, not trying to think he is the same player from 3 to 5 years ago as he is today. But an upgrade nonetheless.
I think you will see Gio act like Glen Wesley did for Canes in 2006 Cup run with a rook tender in Ward .. sure he was older and smarter but he carried that canes team on his back defensively to da Cup .. Wesley came up offensively with Bruins much like Gio in Calgary as an offensive guy but learned his craft well .. I think you will see same from Gio carrying this team defensively on 2nd pair .. those guys were pure leaders and do whatever it takes to win guys .. these types always have enough GAS for a run

F=MA, center of gravity, all our kinda moot in the discussion.
Fact is, if he had wheels, a scoring touch, played physical, had an edge to his game and was 6'2 - 220 he would be the headline of the trade and it would've been a totally different trade.

We got a guy who is the size he is and has the skills he has because thats who is. Now the question is how he will fit in. Or should we have gotten a bigger guy with a different skill set? Because if a big body is all that matters we had Nick Ritchie....
