We boo'd him out of the Gardens and he went on to win two more cups U believe and go into the Hall of Fame. A very Leafy thing to do but I don't think we retired his jersey
It’s even more Leafy then all that, you’re leaving out that we paid Detroit to take him (retained salary) and got jack diddly squat back.

Short isn’t small. 190 at 5’9” is heavy and he plays like it.

I’ve seen 5’9”, 184lb Brendan Ghallagher barrel through NHL defensemen a hell of a lot harder than 6’5”, 240lb Freddy Gauthier.

Physics is physics, is 5'9 Brendan Gallagher going to barrel through Chara? I certainly understand your point and compete is never a bad thing but there are very few short players who can physically dominate a larger player. I have no idea who this new guy is, I hope he proves that he is the exception to the rule.

not addressing goaltending seems crazy
as nice as is to see Gio as a Leaf seems like we just wasted couple 2nds and dermott for another early exit
pressure is on Campbell to come back and return to form it looks like

I think most Leaf fans already know why we are going to fail in the playoffs. Dubas will, as he always does, fix last seasons problem, next summer. Not addressing what next seasons problem will be.

I'd rather have Gallagher than the 6'5 200ish pound Freddy the Goat.

Playing style means more than raw size.

I’m not trying to say anyone is right or wrong here, but this post made me think of this and it’s always fun.

First guy I thought of. I have never understood the fscination with height. Stocky guys that use it are great. Sure a big guy that does it is great but rare.

I will say, I do believe that Giordano may turn out to be a highly underrated pickup for Toronto; and that combined with Lyubushkin, the Leafs may have improved their D a lot more than Dubas gets credit for.

You look at the "ask" the Leafs have put on Jake Muzzin over the last few years in the playoffs -- and it has been somewhat monumental. He's been for the most part up to the task; but has gotten hurt. You hear countless stories from opposition about how "Muzzin is the only guy they're worried about". Giordano brings a lot of the same elements to the game as Muzzin.

One of the challenges the Leafs had last year is that it was basically Muzzin and Bogosian to do all of the physical "heavy lifting"... with Bogo trying to do it from the 3rd pair.

Lyubushkin is an upgrade on Bogosian IMO, and the fact that he seems to be gravitating towards being a Rielly-partner will certainly help his ability to impact the game. With Giordano in the mix, it could give the Leafs a ton of flexibility to roll 3 units with confidence... Muzzin-Holl and Giordano-Brodie... knowing that a reduction in Muzzin-Holl's workload could very well drastically improve their game.

They could also go to Muzzin-Brodie for a "shutdown" pair, and then Holl, Liljegren, or Sandin with Giordano on a true 3rd pair.

Call me crazy... but I think I like Toronto's D better than I like Florida's. Yes, they have Ekblad and Weegar, but I think it drops off a lot quicker than Toronto's. Chiarot succeeded in an environment where all Montreal did was think defence... that is not the Florida Panthers.

I'd rather have 6' 3" Auston Matthews than 5'9" Brendan Gallagher. Gallagher has more skill than Freddie, not a reasonable comparison at all. Skill means more than playing style. If you have two players who are equal skill one guy is 5'9 170lbs and the other is 6'5 240lbs, and they have a corner battle the bigger guy will win more times than the smaller guy. If you got the same two guys in a net front presence, the bigger guy will win 99.9% of the time.

In your reasoning please explain Martin St Pierre.
Size does help but in not an indicator of strength.
To quote godfather Lou, he has hockey strength

There is something to do be said for leverage and catching a guy off balance.
Moore on Chara is pretty silly. If Chara is fully aware Moore has no chance

I'm over 6 foot and 225lbs and I've never run into a 5'8 guy who was as tough as he thought he was, the little guys usually end up on their assess., cause they like to chirp and prove something to the bigger guys. I got 45 lbs on you, sorry but you may be feisty but physics don't lie.
I have a lower center of gravity then you do. You are right, physics dont lie.

I don't like this deal. I don't like any deal that involves multiple 2nd rounders for one player. This smells like the Foligno trade, including the overtly positive spin on it by fans and media.

Could have gotten Braun (3rd) and Motte (4th) instead, and the Leafs would still have their 2nds. Give me a steady stream of Knies and Robertson level prospects over a 39 year old rental.

For one, he's 38., not 39, three years removed from being the winner of the Norris trophy. His acquisition, is far better than Braun and Motte would be. As has been stated repeatedly, he's looking to sign here for next year, so this really isn't a pure rental situation either.

It's a solid deal, particularly given the overpays at the deadline.
