Why declare him to be a bust as a top 6 player after ONE GAME?? You wouldn't declare him to be a legit top 6 player if he had put up a 5 pt game tonight would you? Give him a few more games in the top 6 while Matthews is out and see if he can't adjust and improve before judging him one way or another.

Rielly's skating, confidence level, decision making, situational awareness, basic shooting and puckhandling and maybe even conditioning have been pretty bad since coming back. Kind of wonder why he's back at all when he's not even 85%.

Its still only one game. Its not like you played him at 2C for all the games that Matthews missed and he looked averaged to bad in almost all of them. If this is how we judge all our prospects, then Liljegren would be considered nothing more than a 3rd pairing Dman with the shaky start he had to his Leafs career.

Sometimes you have to give a player a good solid chance and see if he can't adjust and improve rather than writing him off after just one or two bad games. If he didn't look good in all the games that he was given the 2C role while Matthews was out then sure we can say he's not ready to take on such a role at least for now, but we haven't done that yet. I hope he's given that chance for the next few games so that we can really evaluate Holmberg and see if he can't take on a bigger role if needed this season.

The guy is pretty high maintenance... out for weeks after one game and a practice back in October. But he's been solid for long stretches so you have to hope he has more quality play in him.

You could try and pair him with Brodie when he comes back or with Timmins and see how it goes. Let Liljegen and Rielly go for a while and see if it still doesn't do well and keep Gio/Holl together.

You need to have him on a shutdown pair, and Sandin can't be anywhere near that

I’m still scratching my head why we can get hitting , and in your face , finish your check type of games shift in shift out by these players I normally like their efforts , but are lacking consistency and finish and ugly disposition.

This is missing the point, Sandin didn't get burned repeatedly because he's soft on the boards or whatever, he backed all the way up to the crease on Chabot's goal for no reason, then tried to sprint out too late and just screened Samsonov. That diving pokecheck on Giroux was also completely stupid. It's not soft, it's rocks in his head.

On the other hand, Kampf pretty much caused two goals against getting creamed along the boards. Pretty weak for a guy whose only value is supposed to be defensive.

Because I expect Tampa to exclusively target Sandin in that case, dump it in his corner every time and break him down. Brodie is great, but can he carry someone while taking top matchups against Kucherov/Point? Trying to shelter Sandin may be better

Timmins won't play in the playoffs, I think we run either of the following:

Rielly, Brodie, Lilly, Giordano, Holl, Sandin

or

Rielly, Brodie, Lilly, Giordano, Holl, TDL acquisition

Meh blaming Rielly is pretty dumb. This has been an on going issue for 5 or so years. And I think a lot of media types who have played in the league keep saying it over and over. When it comes to the Leafs back end, they look great on advantaged stats but they are desperately missing sandpaper back there. One or two big guys who can absorb a check and still make a first pass. Guys who will clear the net consistently. It’s those little things that contribute to winning that advanced stats don’t track.

Ottawas forwards had their way tonight. I expect the major upgrade if there is one to be on defense.
