Just tuned in after watching most of the first. Didn't like the first goal at all. Last two were just bad defensive efforts. One by our best D, one by our worst.

Coaching is an issue. But, all three of those can also be tied to the makeup of the team. Our best right shot defender is Nikita Zaitsev. We don't possess many defenders who are strong along the walls to break-up cycles. It is not one or the other.
They look like they are being coached to not cover the point which causes the point men to take an extra second to set the play and cycle which in theory leads to more SA.

Also their overload dzone coverage draws multiple leafs in and leaves others on the opposing team open more.

the only thing that worries me about the Leafs is NOT Freddie, NOT the defense, it's their ability to go to SLEEP for parts of the game. They have these mental lapses that result in monster-scoring chances against, over and over. They can usually bounce back and get the goal (or three) they need, especially against bad teams, but I'm not sure that's repeatable in the playoffs, especially not against the Boston/Tampa types.

I'm not sure if it's coaching or that players are looking for offense too much or if it's mental or youth or some combination.

Maybe the combination of their playing style (high tempo, high pace, forcing the play) yields to more errors?

It's nothing that's going to change in the short term, not with this coaching staff and personnel but that style relies on speed/skill and tenacious forecheck and board play - there are players on that roster that can't play that way and have success.

But what the hell do I know, I just type nonsense all day and lie about playing in the NHL.

I doubt they are being coached to just stick check and not take the body to win the puck. Look at that last goal.

Its so strange.

They play 5 on 5 defense like they're killing a penalty.

I'm certainly not part of the sky is falling crowd but Mtl is only 6 points behind us. No, I do not want to drop down to the WC spot just to avoid being bullied by Boston.

Having the Habs pass us in the standings would be far more embarrassing than anything else that can happen in the playoffs against the #2 ranked team in the league.

I think the best thing we can do is to rest all of our star players in the first round. No point getting them injured and bruised, physically and mentally. Let them rest and we can try again next year. Call up some of the Marlies kids and let them get some experience and see who will crack the line up next year.
Flyers can't make the playoffs next year and are literally playing for nothing. Before anybody says their young players are playing for jobs, the leafs have just as many young guys doing the same thing.

There's just no excuse.

I know the leafs don't have much to play for right now, but Tampa had already secured 1st overall when we last played them, and I've never seen this leafs team try as hard as Lightening players did that game.

They just don't care.

And they'd be SO GOD DAMN GOOD if they did.

You want engaged ? Should have paid him the 8.5 he asked for.

Engaged nylander was rotm twice, world mvp, and has demonstrated it many times throughout 3 seasons.

But he’s garbage so far tonight.

Nolan Patrick is running around crying like a brat, cross checks Zaitsev to the ice and all Marleau can muster is a “settle down.” That’s not the kind of demeanour I want to see mentor this group.
That's what we've done all year long. Why does this still surprise people.

It's nice to hear the talking heads in the 2nd int rip on the stick checks and lack of hitting

It’s also ludicrously unlikely.

Overdrive was talking about how the Young Leafs love getting their individual points. Matthews especially has to start playing like he understands floating around and being on the ice for a goal against can’t just be made up for with two snipes when he wants to turn it on.

That 1st goal was Marincin in a nutshell. He glides instead of stops.

It's been an issue going back to Game 6 against the Caps in 2017, and for some reason there has been no improvement.

We're going on a slide into the playoffs boys. Which team are we beating in the next 5 playing like this?

Ottawa won 4-0 last night. We beating them? Oh man I cannot wait to see our response to getting our asses KICKED by the Sens last time. Melnyk called our D a joke.

Will we respond? Can we? I really don't want to hate this team. Please do SOMETHING!

Lol even Couturier knows they are eliminated.

He waited like two seconds before answering how they have to play these must win games.
