You know that Chicago dumped Seabrook in that deal, right? And they got a 2nd round pick for taking on Johnson while dumping Seabrook.
I do. They dumped a LTIR contract on a Tampa ownership generously parking it off their salary cap. That’s good ownership over in Tampa.

Chicago probably talked themselves into thinking Tyler Johnson could be a useful player for them. But that sounded dubious to me and good grief was Tyler bad and disinterested in playing game one of his Blackhawks career. And they still get to overpay him for the next three seasons. Brutal mistake taking on that contract for a measly 2nd rounder and an off-the-salary cap contract.

What’s interesting about Seabrook is that I assume he’s in LTIR so no effect on Tampa’s cap.
Which means their owners are wealthy enough to just throw that money away that Seabrook is making. Tampa has good ownership. They took on a financial obligation of size to free up $5mm in cap space on a really terrible Tyler Johnson contract.

I don’t think Chicago realizes just how bad Tyler Johnson is. If Chicago is a bad team and Johnson plays with that little effort and attention, he’s a healthy scratch level player. Chicago got a really ugly glimpse of going thru the motions Tyler Johnson Wednesday night. Chicago healthy scratched Strome in that game but there is no way he’d have played as disinterested and poorly as Tyler Johnson did (-3, 13:51 ice time) demoted in-game from line 1 to line 4.
Both Tampa and the hawks have wealthy owners willing to spend money. Tampa had more ability to deal with seabrooks cap hit at the start of the year when LTIR money is important. Chicago would have lost someone they apparently didn’t want to lose to waivers is what I believe. Tampa did not care. The hawks probably did think TJ could be a 2 million dollar player though. It’s more complicated than you are making it out to be.
