Throwing this out there based on something Kypreos brought up today. He threw out Reilly for Miller straight up which I think is a tad light, so I’ll post this

Reilly
Minton
2nd

For

Miller
Soucy

Cap wise it’s fine, Rielly gets to go home. Vancouver gets a young centre in return and a decent pick.

Leafs get a second line upgrade and a replacement defenceman.

I like Soucy, I wanted the Leafs to sign him, he does NOT replace Rielly

Not a bad proposal OP, but cant see the Canucks throwing Soucy in this as hes kinda fan fave there. Could see Desharnais in the deal instead, which could give the Leafs a good look on the right side instead..

No one says he replaces Reilly, it’s about getting Miller and having a defenceman that can step into the lineup.

I would then go after someone like Jones. If you’re going to go for it, go big.

I like Reilly probably more than most, but I think JT is a guy that could really change the balance in the east as much as Rantanen in Carolina or maybe even more because he isn’t coming here to be THE guy. He’d be the 4th guy and drops Tavares to 5th.

What team in the NHL has that type of firepower and depth?

Then you go after an offensive dman like Jones or even a retained Karlsson and call it a day.

Desharnais would be at best a #7. Leafs would need at least a number 5.

you called him a replacement d man in the OP

he's a d man yes but he is not a replacement.

Now if he were on the block I'd be interested but not for Rielly

Pure value-wise I don’t think it’s a particularly good trade for Vancouver. But Miller doesn’t seem to be capable of being a functioning part of a locker room, so pass.

He’s a BC boy and specifically Vancouver so I think that would be more likely, and I don’t see the Leafs biting the bullet to have him in the division
New baby and wife is from Windsor, moving across the country would seem unlikely. He's lived here his entire adult life, I imagine he considers it home and wives have a big say in these things.
Leafs wouldn't care about trading within the Division if it made sense.

Only reason I opened up the thought of trading Reilly is for JT and the need the Leafs have for a 2C.

It creates a hole in the blue line but there are enough defencemen out there that I think they could back fill the offensive need on the blue line.

The benefit though of Miller as your 2C and Tavares as the 3c or even a winger far exceeds the loss of Reilly

Knies Matthews Marner
McMann Miller Nylander
Domi Tavares Jarnkrok
Holmberg Kampf and one of 3 or 4 guys

This is a forward group that would be at or near the top of the NHL.

And a # 3 or 4 offensive dman to a group of
Tanev, McCabe, OEL, Benoit, Timmons, etc

That’s a very strong team, dare I say even among the favourites.

Miller would be a great add no doubt but I don't think the Leafs have the pieces to pull it off.

Rielly and Minten for Miller and Desharnais? Friedman said Vancouver was wanting to move Desharnais in one of the earlier 32 thoughts. We all know the situation with Miller.

It would hinge on Rielly being willing to waive and sucks to give up our only real centre prospect of note but Vancouver would get some local kids at least that would want to be there.

I think if he were to say yes to anywhere it would be for Vancouver. 🤷
He grew up a Leafs fan. His dad was also a Leafs fan. He has a home in Vancouver, sure, but he also has one in Toronto. I doubt he says yes to Vancouver, especially considering how they're potentially sellers this year.

I think a lot of guys play for teams they didn't grow up cheering for, being close to your parents probably jumps childhood team fandom.

Can you please tell me why Reily would agree to this?

Their three top forwards are rumoured to be gone before the start of next season.

This is a theoretical offer checking what people think of the fairness for a trade. Jeez

Not sure why Vancouver wants Reilly, we currently run Hughes and Hronek on separate pairings and Reilly doesn't bring anything different as a puck mover. Also taking him off the top PP and running a 5 forward set obviously hasn't helped Morgan when his production's dropped by about half, so I doubt that he would rediscover his scoring when Quinn's the #1 guy and he'd at best split minutes with Hronek.

If value wise it's Minten for Soucy and Reilly + 2nd for Miller, I don't see the 2nd part going through. Soucy's been okay but if the defenseman Petey is ready then I'd trade him for Minten, but not sure why the main part of the trade goes through in my books. Minten's fine but neither he nor Raty would be ready to fill the #2 C role, which we'd want to do if we're trading Miller (would personally want someone like Cozens coming back).

I don’t think anyone involved in this deal says yes.
Vancouver doesn’t want or need Rielly.
Rielly who would need to waive free up a Leafs fan and has a wife from Ontario and a new born.
The Leafs shouldn’t want anything to do with Miller imo. Great player but a locker room cancer and at 32 I think that contract is going to age poorly.

Being close to parents can be a factor for sure but his wife is from Ontario and moving to BC would be moving pretty damn far from her parents too.
