Vancouver execs really aren't helping themselves out here either. As soon as it dies down a bit one of them says something to put it right back in the media again.
You either need to shut up about it and make the adjustments you need to get through the season (separate lines/ PP units) or you buck up and make the best deal you can and move on.
With that said I personally think they should make the best deal for Miller that they can and move on. If you can do so without retaining salary do it. The guy his 31 and has a history of being difficult to deal with to some degree. Bring in a winning vet our two to work with Hughes, EP, but someone who is positively vocal. You might be taking a skill downgrade in the trade but sometimes team cohesiveness makes up for that.
Peterson keeps your window open longer.
I saw a suggestion that the press conference was one of 2 things:
- Preparing the fanbase that any trade for these two won't be good value for the Canucks
- Communicating to the players that they need to suck this situation up and play through it (because the trade offers are so bad)
