Post-Game Talk: Leafs beat Connor Hellebuyck 4-3, end 3 game skid in OT

If we had Helle we would be a team to be feared.
If we had this goalie and if we had that goalie. We dont We have Andersen, all bets are off, Campbell hurt. and Hutch yikes, we dont know what we're getting with him in net some nights. Until Dubas addresses this problem, we have to work with what we've got. Maybe we could stop being rumored on a few different top 6 forwards on some bs twitter facebook rumor pages and maybe be in on some goaltending help for a change, that would be nice.

Nice win, but if we do not tidy up our defensive zone puck play we are going to be chasing a lot of games.

Soft plays, losing a lot of wall puck battles... need the team to firm up on those plays. The reason we were flying vs EDM was because we were almost perfectly clean in our own zone.

As if neither ref saw that hacksaw-jim-duggan slash in the corner? I mean the stick was obliterated ffs. Fckn losers.

No denying the Jets have some offensive skill, but they have a very weak defensive structure. I don't think they can lock anything down, at least haven't shown it in 3 games vs us. If not for Helly we rout them this week.

For perspective on Andersen, are Jets fans saying Helly should have saved that Nylander goal? Cause sure as shit people on this board would be claiming he should have. He does need to get better though, more timely saves so we are not chasing the game all the time. Sometimes the other teams do make good plays. Their 2nd and 3rd goals to me were skill goals like we normally score... first one I think he over played.
We literally gave up only 4 high danger chances and only 5 last game. If people aren't satisfied with this performance defensively, then they never will.

The best part about that Matthews goal was Helle's reaction.
He's like what just happened.

Bit hard like Smith on Spezza there but you gotta respect a shooter like Mathews there in close.

Every goal that goes by him for the remainder of the year will be under a microscope. It doesn't matter how good the goal is in reality, or how many of the same quality goals the Leafs score against other goaltenders... Every non-shutout will be treated as if he's the worst ever.

Call him out when it's due. But why fabricate hate for player when it's undeserved? 2 of the 3 goals tonight were saves he had no business making. Surprise, the Jets have great forwards too. The first goal, he has to save. Toronto absolutely needs that save.

He needs to be better. A lot better. But the hatred is over the top. It's no longer rational.

Also... Your goalie is struggling a little bit right now. How about as a team you stop coughing up odd man rushes like they're candy caught in your throat? You know, team effort and all that...

Really disagree with all of this.

Literally not literally, as there's no actual single definition of a high danger chance.

Jets are very leaky with chances...I think if we ever matched up with them for a playoff series, although they'd be a tough match, can't expect Helley to do this every night. At some point the horse shoe falls out of your ***.

The Matthews goal was absolutely disgusting in OT.

JT was setting up 88 all night, should have buried more.

Having Simmonds as a net front presence for the PP would be nice.

Although you can't blame Andersen for the goals...2 on 1s....tips etc...it would be nice to get some more big saves...it feels like 9/10 times a grade A chance is in the back of our net whereas it took us 7-8 of those to get by Helley.

Most every night - what does that even mean?

I'll say it again, take a night off from hating on our goalie, put down the calculator and enjoy the win. Life's too short to waste on this hating BS night after night after night.

I know you’re reasonable but he’s not wrong. Been second best to Demko and Hellebuyck. I agree with enjoying the moment though

the jets had just 11 high danger chances in the last 2 games and they scored 7 times,,that is flat out BRUTAL

no matter how you slice it

I'm not disputing that. But would you agree that two of three goals he let in tonight don't get saved by the majority of goalies in the NHL?

The odd man rush was a perfect finish by Ehlers. Doesn't get better than that. Textbook 2 on 1. The third goal was a really nice tip by Stastny. I thought the 1st goal was a little bit soft. Anderson needed to save that. No questions asked.

It was tipped from like 10 feet out. That is always going to be a game of chance hoping it gets deflected wide, it losses momentum, or goes right into you.
I’m good with that explanation
I didn’t see that
Thank you
I’ll have to review that
But I did think he lost his net just a tad
But again I could be wrong as I only watched once
Go Leafs go

The whole win as a team and lose as a team is completely lost on this fanbase. Always has to have a scapegoat. Usually a goalie, but not unknown to be a dman.

Usually suspects won't give props to Andersen tonight is all I'm saying. It'd be too much for them. Zeke, Deke, Peak and Squeak.
Those guys don’t really understand the game very well, easy to ignore.
Andersen was fine tonight but certainly not the reason they won.

Guy is a Marner hater
How can anyone hate the guy. He’s making EVERYONE eat a shit ton of crow with his play. Pk, amazing
PP, the brain of the machine
5v5, Matthews’s partner in crime
Pacing for 108 points
If you still hate him, then you probably wouldn’t like Mcdavid at 12.5 either cuz “he doesn’t play defence”.
Can’t believe he still has haters like that

Our forwards needed to be better against Columbus. Toronto got shutout twice in that series. Anderson shut Columbus out once... You can't win playoff series when your elite forwards (the foundation of your team) get held scoreless by friggen Korpisalo and Merzlikins. That's simply not good enough in any reality.

Yup. What some people don't get is that there's two sides to the equation - when the goalie has great numbers is it because he played that well or is it that the offense didn't to a good job of converting their chances. People keep saying their goalie outplayed our goalie but what if it was their offence that outplayed ours?

Not saying that was the case tonight (it wasn't) but against CLB, IMHO it was a huge factor.

We'll see what his plans are in the offseason likely.

That was posted after 2 periods of play tonight.

Interesting stat. Seems like coaching staff have some work to do including offense. Gotta change how we operate in the offensive zone.

It was the same thing against CBJ in the play in; but most of the people didnt want to believe it and wanted to scapegoat Freddy

Tampa has the pieces. I'd take Toronto over Colorado with those adds.

If Toronto magically added one of the two best goalies in the world I would be confident in them as well... As I would be if they added McDavid, the best forward in the world, or Hedman, arguably the best defenseman in the world.
