5th and 35th for 12th and 21st seems like it would be overpayment on our part. Delete the 35th and it's more fair.

From what the video said was that offer actually on the table or was Buffalo just talking about offering that to us? doubt Burke would have done that.

Grigerenko was a steal at 12 though, if we could have somehow traded to get that pick, woulda done it to get Grigs in a heartbeat assuming it's a relativey fair deal.

Sounds like to me Buffalo wanted to trade to get our pick to draft Grigerenko so I'm sure they're now thrilled they didn't do that since they got him anyway at 12

Don't be so confidant Burke was telling the truth. Didn't he claim he had offers for 4 or 5 first rounders?

I think he said he could have gotten a few.

I think it's been almost confirmed that he had a deal for MacArthur for a first, Grabovski for a 1st and prospect (from Chicago I believe).

He mentioned that he had offers for Reimer and Schenn as well but I believe that has only come from his mouth.

Move down 7 spots to move up 14.

I know those 7 are more valuable since obviously the gap from 3-4 is bigger than the gap from 235-236. But I would of been down for this trade.

Finn/Rielly is dope but Buffalo might have got the best pair of prospects from this draft.

No chance everyone in the 6-10 were picking D.
We got lucky he was there at 5.

Lucky is a stretch.

For the 4 picks ahead of us...

Yakupov, Murray and Galy were all locks.

It really just came down to who the Isles would of taken, and if they would have taken Rielly or not. Only real threat of someone taking him was the Isles.

I'm not. 5-12 is a severe drop. We might have taken Finn there still, he was ranked much higher than 35.

In my opinions we got arguably the 2nd overall pick and the 12th pick. I am saying talent wise, Finn was a top 15 pick easy and Rielly is better than Murray pretty close to Yak even. Trading with Buffalo would still have us getting some decent talent but nowhere even NEAR what we STOLE.

Wonder if Rielly would have been there at 12? If so we probably would have drafted Rielly and Finn with those two picks.

The trade would've been made for the sole reason of Rielly being taken before 5. Even if he doesn't go #5 he doesn't make it past #7 IMO.

I don't think we stole anything at this point. Grigs was a great pick at 12 and could be next giroux. Let's just wait and see. None of these kids even played a game

The fact that we not only got Rielly, but Finn in the second round makes me glad we didn't do the trade ... I really like Finn's game, he could be a gem in the second

Would rather trade MacA for a first in this year's draft .. Tons of talent it seems

Rielly has the potential to be a top end player, when you are in the position picking as high as 5 first time since the Schenn pick (though we gave up a 2nd to move up), you make that pick. To get Finn, essentially another first rd pick at #35, really we couldn't do any better. Sure glad Rielly and Finn were available when we picked.

I can't believe Grigorenko went so late

8 of the top 12 picks were D. That certainly played out well for the Sabres. There is a pre draft video of Darcy saying they needed about 5 D to go before their pick to ensure they got one of their guys. With 8 going they ended up getting both of their guys. Big early run on D for that draft.

I think the Leafs wanted Rielly all along so I'm happy we got our man.

I really hope Grigorenko does well and shuts up all his critics. This guy was so heavily criticized...he'll bolt, he sucks, he has work ethic issues... at one point, I admit, I was relieved we didn't take him, because with the Leafs, everything that can go bad, will go bad.

He really outplayed Galchenyuk, and Yakupov at the WJC, two players that are supposed to be head and shoulders better than him by the so called "scouts."

Man I'd love it if he outplays Galchenyuk. Roy even suggested to the Habs to take Grigorenko! That would be epic.

Go Grigo! Prove them all wrong  especially the Habs.

No question the Leafs were dead set on Rielly, but Grigs being that big, highly skilled C would have been a great building block to move forward with. Great pick by the Sabres but I'm really happy with Rielly now that we've had time to soak it all in. Gardiner and Rielly is going to be part of a scary D core!!!

I think both teams got the guys they wanted with their picks without trading. It was a win for either side in the end.

The Jordan Staal trade is ultimately what threw the middle of the first round out of whack.

So if Grigs develops as planned and terrorizes the Leafs in years to come blame Shero for picking Pouliot and Yzerman for Koekkoek.

I can't fathom how Tampa had Koekkoek rated higher than Grigo and Forsberg.

I'm very happy with Rielly and Finn at 5th and 35th, good picks IMO. 12th + 21st for 5th + 35th seems like a bad deal for us, there would have been no way to know that Grigorenko would still be there at 12th, we easily could have been stuck with a junk pick there. If they first made the Calgary deal, then 12th + 14th for 5th + 35th would have been worth considering if Rielly was off the board, but 12th + 21st seems like bad value.
