i always get confused by this phrasing - you mean that we can send him down without putting him on waivers, rigth?
Yeah, messed that right up - backwards.

He's subject to waivers.....and will be a Group 6 UFA like Bunting unless he plays 75 games this season.

Tell me you don't believe in Liljegren without telling me you don't believe in Liljegren

He seems to be the black sheep of the Leafs these days. :(

Its not like he's even played many NHL games to warrant some fans or the organization to be so down on him and I really wish the Leafs would just give him a legit stretch of games to prove himself like they're doing with Sandin. If he plays poorly that's one thing, but much like Holl when Babcock was here Liljegren isn't even given a chance to show if he's ready for the NHL or not.

I don't think this guy is for the AHL. Marlies have too many offensive defenseman (including Hollowell and Duszak on RD) and Menell probably has nothing to gain from being there.

I think this is Liljegren's competition and he will be our #7 if he does not win. Liljegren could be on our 2nd PP and in the bottom 4. Menell projects to fill the same role in the NHL.

I bet the Leafs found that #7's (see Tucker Poolman's projected deal) are getting paid and they will likely sign a defensive guy to double as depth and a Marlies top 4 RD next year. Maybe McKeown out of the SHL.

lmao im still confused.

if we want to send him to the marlies does he need to go on waivers first?

Best DEFENCEMAN not currently in the NHL. Let's not oversell it.
Seriously, will he even come over from the KHL? Certainly not to play in the AHL.

He's a local Minnesotan, so not as if he has any particular strong ties to the KHL. Will likely come down to potential for opportunities

This guy is actually good. Not going to be surprised if he forces his way in to the line up and is running the PP

Additional Menell details for leaf fans is he's not longer Waiver exempt and I suspect wouldn't pass through waivers if tried to send him to the AHL, and if he doesn't play 75 games this season he becomes a type 6 UFA.

Why do I feel nothing will become of this. He’ll probably stay in the KHL and become a UFA next year.

He's not going to stay in the KHL. He went there due to AHL/NHL uncertainty in the Covid era, and didn't want to be caught without a place to play. Completely reasonable.

He'll sign, and either make Toronto or play for whoever claims him on waivers, then get to shop for the best fit next year.

I never knew the AHL played on the big ice and played the Euro game.. 24 years old and put up solid AHL numbers and acquired for nothing. Looks like a good move to me to take a chance on.

You must have that old internet browser that cuts off data after 2019-20... He played in the K last year, in Minsk, which is in Europe... you're welcome.

dude only signed in KHL due to circumstance (AHL shutdowns)

it's not like he's drawn to play there or determined to stay there.

he wanted a 1 way, Minnesota offered 2-way. If Leafs give 1-way he'll likely sign.

"Let me guess a small player who dominates the Euro game and has great possession metrics?

Dubas has the idea he can build a team that will dominate on the big ice and have those skills equally dominate on the small ice."

So I guess the three previous seasons in the AHL and putting up numbers just get over looked cause he played in the KHL during a covid season? Anything to fit your agenda I guess.

This Menell fellow sound like the Leafs are trying to find this years KHL's version of Mikko Lehtonen.

& recent signing Kirill Semyonov the new Alexander Barabanov.

Boston found Torey Krug this way. They constantly adding players to their lineups from all over
Worse case he plays for the Marlies, they also need some help

So his one year last year in Europe trumps the 3 seasons in the AHL? I guess anything to fit your agenda.

So you intentionally delete the year he played in Europe, ask an asinine question about how you didn't think the AHL was in Europe, remember all along not posting his full career ... you don't post he played in Europe, then you get sad because someone corrected your intentionally misleading post. Move along I don't have time for people like you. Shoo ....

You literately posted "another small player who dominates the euro game" and I posted stats of him putting him good numbers in the AHL. What?

but

his point was that he was performing on NHL regulation ice. in NHL-like systems.

The whole point is that he doesn't just perform on big ice. he didn't start getting good in the KHL. He was good long before that.

My order of operations prediction from yesterday:
Goalie. ✔️
Bunting ✔️
More W’s - pending - ideally c/w types
D ✔️More to come

A little out of order from my prediction, but about as low a cost gamble with some potential.

In the mix for a depth role. Interesting gamble. I like it if MINN fans don’t (:

Keep in mind Leafs have only his rights now as he played in the KHL and he doesn't currently have an NHL contract so he needs to be signed..

He could stay and play in the KHL next year with Dinamo Minsk .
