Team saves about 3.8ish mil for the duration of his current deal then gets stuck with an additional 2.1ish mil cap penalty until 2035.

Not sure it's worth it.
Yeah I think the only way out is if he waives his NMC. No point even pondering that as Rielly's probably staying come hell or high water.

Maybe it needs to go down the Jacob Trouba road of public campaigning and hostile pressuring if his play doesn't at least stabilize. At some point you mandate change and run a guy out of town. Frankly, his play warrants that kind of hostility because he looks like a guy who's happy mailing it in and making the same excuses looking like a guilty school boy after every game.

The one break is as Tre didn't sign the current deal, is it's easier for him to go to Reilly in the off-season and ask if there are teams he'd be open to waving for.

That said, hard to get a read on how the team is viewing him moving forward

I would read Morgan the riot act behind the scenes. We covered your ass in public about freeing up your defensive conscience to play more offensively. We got Brandon Carlo to come in and kiss your butt about what a legend you are. And you continue to play like late stage TJ Brodie and cost us we're going to forcefully move you this summer.

His long term struggles have been to an unprofessional. He looks out of shape. His head is in the clouds. No joking around anymore.

If the organization tells Rielly they no longer want him anymore he will move on, like most people would.

It might be easy, or he might jam them up a bit, but there are very few examples of players that will battle it out till the end.

I think the fact that Tree approached Marner about waiving his NMC and he wasn't the one who extended Rielly gives you a bit of insight into how he will operate. I suspect the list of places that Rielly will accept a trade to is very small.

Calgary, Seattle, Vancouver and Los Angeles would all make sense to various degrees because of the proximity of Rielly's parents in BC.

I think you can knock Vancouver of the conversation right away since they just extended Marcus Pettersson and have Quinn Hughes at LD.

Calgary could make sense but the return is likely very soft, maybe Yegor Sharangovich, Blake Coleman or Nazem Kadri would be coming back.

Hey guys. Are you guys okay losing Fraser Minton in this trade. Read good things about him. 2nd i prospect rankings.
Much rather him than Cowan. Hope he does well (not too well on the Bruins) but his upside seems limited to a good 3C. Nothing wrong with that, just not enough offence from him at any level.

If Carlo was what some of you TOR folks think he is(but isn't), he never would have been flipped, with term left at cheap money, for a top 4 D, and especially to a rival franchise.
Enjoy the lack of toughness and the inability to clear the puck under pressure. Particularly with the game on the line.
Sweetheart of a human being, but he's never been the same since bad concussions consecutively in his 1st two years in the NHL.

He's honestly been fine, he's a stable #4 but he's stuck playing with Rielly.

Tanev is the real elite defenseman back there but he's out.

He's pretty vanilla, limited skills and average skater. But he's pretty smart, has a good wrister and works hard. Not physical and might be considered soft by a lot of people. A lot of comparisons to a Matt Stajan type player for me if he puts things together. He's also a very good person.

I'm sure he'll do just fine. I don't think anyone is expecting a defenseman that dominates but a good defensive defenseman with size and a boost in quality for RHDs, something we lacked. He's under 4M for us so it will help make everything fit.

He won't be the first defenseman in this league to go from a struggling team to a good one and do much better. This is the hope/expectation.

Enjoy the rebuild.

Well, in kind:
  1. Enjoy our 11th depth C and low chance of succeeding conditional 1st two years from now for a league-wide, 6'5" #4 defensive defenseman, who was part three of your club's "retool".
  2. Enjoy continued greased games (at least against us) but without the kind of success they used to provide given your championship core is now completely gone.
  3. Enjoy Charlie "Sphincter Gained Consciousness Sucking a Lemon" MacAvoy as Boston's new default franchise face.
Cheers!

I don't care what we got other than the 1st rounder, even low 1st rounder, he is not worth.
He's a disappointment and I've wanted him gone for 3 seasons. One concussion away from an end of career condition. (He's had 4 or 5 cause he doesn't keep his head up in corners)
You won't get an argument from me over McAvoy.
The only redeeming factor is his salary moving forward is what 5-6 D-men get, not 3-4's.

But continue to let your franchises unrealized playoff (for 60+ years)performances keep you bitter.

  • Enjoy Charlie "Sphincter Gained Consciousness Sucking a Lemon" MacAvoy as Boston's new default franchise face." FYI, Pasta, which every team in the league would remove a body part for, is the new and current face of the franchise. McAvoy is a 9.5M/yr albatross, but that's our problem. We overpaid when he was very good, unlike your payment for Carlo. Wait and see. Hugs and kisses from a friend that is on your side inn this crazy world climate.

Of course, Pasta's the preeminent piece of Boston, poor guy. McAvoy isn't far behind, and suitable fodder. I like Pastrnak the person, ergo, he gets my respect while McAvoy...

As for your comment on bitterness; That's like turning off the light on Bane. Our fanbase sees in the dark, Mad-Marcus, but we sulk with seven more Cups than you enjoy in your sulk-sessions, and smile knowing we will never be fourth on the all-time list; H/T to Montreal.

Happy to have a respectful exchange...or this. Your choice and turn. Our threads.

I get it, your Leafs, were my Red Sox for years(every year till the millennium), always the bridesmaid.
The important thing is how important your ownership group treats the Leafs and good or bad moves, try to win a cup, first and foremost. The Jacobs are capitalists first and foremost and view the B's only as an investment. Only spending when sales are down.
The Bruins reign of constant high competitiveness, for a little while. I'm cool with that, it's been 20+ of competitive play.

But, mark my words, Carlo will disappoint, he's just not a tough player, and by that I don't just mean physically. He can be exposed and when the stakes are high even more so. Just do a search on the B's forum. We did not expect to get that much for him and are pretty happy with the return for someone that a lot of us wanted gone if only for minimal return.

Now go beat FLA, WASH, CAR, or TB and get that cup!!..and much respect for the sovereignty of 🇨🇦!

I think the hyphen in Mad-Marcus is better placed then all of that faux sincerity in questionable places. I take it Mad and Marcus aren't two surnames joined by marriage? Kudos if they are - very inventive.

If you're invested enough to know that Carlo is damaged goods, you're invested enough to know we aren't beating the best teams of the last 5-7 years to play the Western Conference champions for the Cup, however those two issues may vary according to perception. Hilarious that other Leafs fans gave you a thumbs up while you added the dig about sovereignty. Just goes to show even in this darkness, there's always a few looking for rays of light, even while obviously to our own ridicule. Most of the time, we just refer to them as MLSE.

Point of clarification, we haven't actually been the bridesmaids. No sir. Not a Finals appearance in going on 60 years. We really are a shattered fanbase that will contrive reasons to be disappointed. So, to push the analogy a little deeper, our view is from the proverbial bottom of the ocean. Simply being The Toronto Maple Leafs is enough for some, win or lose. It's not a way of saying you can't hurt us, but it's a way of saying it's sort of silly to try given that those within the club do a much better job.

In kind, this isn't the part where I say: Much respect for your Mayor's fiduciary irresponsibility! It's a good thing you depend on Quebec and not Ontario for much of your energy! So not only does Montreal own your hockey rivalry, but they also power it!

Boston/Toronto tidbit #1: Sat at a hotel in southern Ontario eating breakfast watching Rask get drafted, and this having hoped since the December before and his World Juniors performance that he would in fact be our pick...Only to see him traded in typical Toronto fashion a day or two? later.

Boston/Toronto tidbit #2: Also repeatedly shared in these boards, my memory of Jagr mouthing, "It's not over" over and over and believing him with 12 or so minutes left in the third, while standing in front of my television for the entire third period, inches away, witnessing our most (and the most?) stupendous collapse in our "storied" playoffs history.

FYSA: You can't really do worse than our own replayed memories, but you're welcome to believe you can if it floats your boat.

The thing with Brandon Carlo as a Leaf is he's just going to be a guy who fills a gap we've always had in our lineup. Not some homegrown prospect who carried a lot of hope and expectations and got caught in a psycho drama with the Boston faithful.
