Like I said, I just don't see the purpose of him in the lineup if all he is going to be is a 2PP specialist. That doesn't mean he did not have a good game overall; it is more questioning his deployment.

We are putting a lot of pressure for him to be a threat offensively, because his defensive game is iffy (and was iffy at times today too) and we are going to have to give him a ton of offensive zone starts.

On top of that, he is eating into ES opportunities that should probably go to Rielly, who is much better with them... And since he is taking a spot of a guy who can PK, we are forced to play Rielly there. It may be a little bit more acceptable if they were willing to use Dermott on the PK, but that is not happening for whatever reason.

So we are left with Rielly playing the same amount of minutes, but less minutes where he excels and more minutes where he is unspectacularly solid (and of course forcing Dermott to RD after he has spent most of his NHL career at LD), to get Sandin an opportunity to play the easiest minutes. Meanwhile we have Liljegren sitting in the press box as a 2nd RHD who would literally resolve all of that: can play 2PP instead of Sandin, can play PK instead of Rielly, and allows Dermott to play LD.

Weird thing to say after a legit dominant performance by our 21yr old dman tbh.

Again, Habs have one of the best bottom 6es in the league and the fancy stats you guys like to use prove it. Funny how those stats become tucked away when it doesn't serve your purpose.

The stats don't show that, tho.

The Habs have one of the worst sets of bottom 6 centers in hockey.

your grasping at straws .. i would have objections saying he was worse than paquette, simmonds, lehtonen and perrault ....

and you people really need to let go of the brooks obsession .... he wouldnt crack the canadiens lineup with a putrid 4th line. and guess the first player the canadiens waive when hoffman or edmunston comes back ... he wouldnt even get claimed

I couldn't care less about Amadio v Brooks, if someone likes Amadio then cheers, if someone likes Brooks then so what? I hope they're right too because Brooks did nothing for us to dislike him. But stating Brooks wouldn't get claimed is nonsense. You clearly have some obsession with Brooks failing to the point you made up some fake army of Brooks obsessed people that doesn't actually exist. He put up 4 goals in 11 games, there are plenty of teams who will give him a shot to show he can stick in the NHL. Whether he sticks or not is uncertain but he will be given the shot by someone nonetheless. If you google Brooks there's already articles being written in Montreal that are very high on him. One even thinks he can be the next Paul Byron so no, your opinion is not shared by the majority so maybe cool it on the "you people".

Mr contradiction himself is back.

Posts GSVA all week to show how good the Leafs are.

Same GSVA literally shows how good Habs bottom 6 is compared to rest of the league .

Another checkmate. You're too easy.

Habs are already going to give him this shot so that aspect is case closed.

Agreed I thought he looked pretty poised overall. Sure he'll get overpowered now and again but I thought he battled and was fairly strong positionally in addition to the quick processing offensive iq. His shot from the point is a welcome change, as are his breakout passes

I thought Engvall looked great and then did a tremendous job of showing why he makes Keefe pull his hair out by tossing one at the empty net with 12 seconds left for the icing.

Kase's play with 3-4 seconds left to tie up the Hab player so they couldn't get a shot or make a play was phenomenal. Keefe should just show everyone that effort over and over.

As much as I shit on Kampf this summer, I'm certainly eating my own words.

The guy looks good.
why get worked up over depth signings in the first place lol let alone ones you’ve hardly seen play.

He seemed as advertised to me. I liked him too.

Ooh! the no look pass from Marner on that Nylander goal was fantastic!:sarcasm:

It is good to win when not all was on top. Marner will probably get a hatrick against Ottawa. Is there any easy way to easy se wich teams the top 4-5 players score most against? Maby play those players more in those games.

Nylander is gonna have Pastrnak like break out season. Also jeez how many f***ing dives by the Habs tonight. Anderson is a big boy, you not seriously going down that easily  The start was horrible but once they woke up, took full control. I'd like to see them start on time next game. Was very impressed with Campbell, Nylander and surprisingly Engvall. He was playing his ass off.
It was truly sickening

Goal aside, “when Nylander was on the ice, 75 per cent of shot attempts were directed at Montreal’s net, and the Leafs held a 6-0 edge in high-danger chances. He registered five shots on goal, threw a hit, blocked a shot, stole a game-high four pucks, and pitched in on Toronto’s excellent 4-for-4 penalty kill.”

Nylander's maturity on full display in Maple Leafs' Opening Night win

Leafs looked like an amateur beer league team for most of the first but they tightened things up and looked pretty good for their first game. Jack is back and kept the boys in.

Glad they won but very disappointed that once again they failed to be ready to start the game. Campbell was the reason they won and good on him

Fun game to watch, a lot of things to like about it. Willie looked like a leader out there, Kampf & Kase were great, team showed push-back, Jack was Jack again. Engvall too was impressive, he's got a chance to run with some pressure & opportunity.

That was some great penalty killing they completely shut them down.

I wouldn't even want to watch the Leafs make the finals if it were gonna end up like that.

I was impressed that the Habs beat Vegas though so I'm not trying to say what they did wasn't impressive.

I'm just glad the Leafs didn't go on a futile run at the time. I just remember being relieved I could stop caring about hockey when the summer was coming out, with all the covid crap. I needed a break.

Really struggling to understand this line of thinking. I mean if you're happy, then that's great. But still ...

Honestly I think willy turns a corner this year and really pushes into the argument for being better than Marner

He picked up where he left off and if he keeps it up, he will be stepping from star level to superstar level, very exciting stuff. That said, can we just enjoy watching him kick ass without comparing him to Marner or anyone else on our team and support all our guys? These player A vs player B discussions are just pointless.

Team dominated play for 2nd and 3rd period.
xgf%
Leafs 34.41% 78.22% 73.64%
Habs 65.59% 21.78% 26.36%

A bit of rust but the second period saw 10 HD shots against the habs. This game could have looked a lot worse for the habs.

It definitely does make us non contenders. I mean how many times you're gonna make the goalie look like a vezina contender?
Or constantly give up odd man rushes?!
I mean, come on already! Leafs won so good, but that D to start was brutal……good thing Campbell was terrific!

Engvall’s speed and size makes him look dominant in possession at times, the fact he’s scoring too is very impressive. I’ve always been meh about him due to his lack of physicality, and occasional brain blip like his icing last night, but he has been good and he's finishing the occasional hit as well. If he keeps it up I’ll be a huge fan.
