Salming is definitely one of my all time favorites.

For me he is a true role model, not only skilled (amazing d-man) but also lots of heart, passion for the game, genuine, honest, loyal and fighting spirit.

I've met him once in a downhill slope approx 10 years ago (Hundfjället - Sweden), we nearly collided. 😉 (I was like "Shit! It was Salming??!!")

He is also very proud to be a Same (The Sámi people):

We Leafs fans were so lucky to have had a player the stature of Borje Salming wearing the B&W. He was one of the NHL's best defenders and certainly next to Tim Horton the best defenseman to ever play for the Maple Leafs. He opened the door for the influx of European players that made the league a lot better by far. His legend continued off the ice which is where a man earns his true worth, he gave his name and time to Toronto Sick Kids hospital and always had time to chat with the fans and to participate in off ice ventures

What horribly sad news to hear that this great man will be struck down by this insidious disease, there is still time and hopefully medical science will win this race!

Borje was indeed a true trailblazer of his generation. He was tough and talented beyond the lack of recognition from the league. He was certainly not a chicken-swede. If it wasn't for the league's infatuation with big bird Robinson on a stacked Habs team BJ would/should have won a few Norris'. The broadsheet bullies targeted him to no end in the 70's but BJ didn't give an inch, so courageous!! One of the best to lace them up for the blue and white. Prayers be with you !

I don’t have much to say aside from:
Salming is a Leaf Legend.
Tough as nails.
Class act.

Wish him and his family nothing but the best.

My earlier comment was simply one of sadness. Life can be a bitch. Funnily, I checked out the Sun today for the first time in years. Of course, (I think it was Worthington) had reached out to Don Cherry. I was not a huge fan of Don. And yet, his positive and so damned accurate comments about Borje, made me tip my cap towards Cherry. Salming was/is/ will ever be, The King.

yeah for sure, and it didn't stop at Robinson, you had Orr, Park, Savard, Potvin, Lapointe, Turnbull, Redmond, Vadnais, Stackhouse and more than a few more, that's a lot of stiff competition for AS games let alone Norris trophies!

and yet Borje still stood out as a true top 5 in the league at the time

Very sad news. Through my work I would talk to him occaisionally. Way back when, he was uncomfortable speaking english but would always accommodate me. He was a perfect gentleman and always treated me with more respect than I probably deserved. Besides being one of the greatest Leafs ever he is a true gentleman. We could use a few more like him wearing the blue and white these days. I wish him and his family all the best for the battle ahead.
