Can someone explain to me why the NBCSN broadcast crew described this guy as having limited offense and no wow factor?

He plays like Drew Doughty, crazy speed and dangles but always 100% under control, never makes a mistake.

He scored at a historic rate in the WHL but the claim is he won't be able to replicate that at the next level? What's the basis for that? I don't understand their take at all.
I think it's less about Smith and more about the quality of defence prospects in the draft. Smith is a tier below the 4 non Dahlin prospects imo but if it were any other average draft, he'd be rated way higher

He's considered a tier below because of his size, which is mattering less and less these days

From what i have seen i would say he is better than Dobson. He is a good pick.

But you are right i think many d-men become little bit underrated beacuse there where so many of them in this draft.

I personally would actually put Smith on same level as Bouchard and Boqvist. I think Dobson is gonna be real good

Inject this into my veins. Based on his model, Perry says Smith was the third best draft eligible dman in the draft behind Dahlin and Boqvist.

Smith is going to be a really interesting prospect to follow in the next couple of years. I think his TPG and U18's really made a lot of scouts sour on him. But his WHL numbers were fantastic. Wonder how it's gonna look down the road, if teams are gonna regret passing on him or no.

The assists were the least impressive part of his game tonight, those were more about the shooters. His poise and breakouts were the real story.

Mitch Brown made a 9 game sample graph between him Dobson and Bouchard (CHL eligibles) although it's only a 9 game sample, Smith beats dobson very badly in zone exits, entries and shot contribution to his team then Dobson by miles. Smith had the highest controlled zone entries out of all 3 dmans, (only Merkley had more) Not sure why he was viewed as the outcast and no in the same sentence as the top 4 non dhalin dmans. Happy the Devils got him then a Western team.

His top speed, and just getting stronger should be priorities for him.

Why I still don’t think he should get more then 9 games this year. Love his toolbox though, definitely looks like a blue chipper

I am still really mad that the Avs passed on him and took Kaut instead.

But my loss is your gain I guess. Glad to see him coming out strong! I don't think he should be in the NHL this season but given that the Devils don't have the hardest blueline to crack, it wouldn't completely shock me either.

Smith had a great game last night against us
Devils got a good one here, I initially had him as the 4th best D (ranked him at like 8-9 after Dahlin, Hughes, Dobson)

Count me in as another thoroughly impresse with Smith last night. Just seemed to always make the right play and is incredibly poised with the puck.

Almost got caught a few times because he doesn't have that elite top end speed but he usually got the puck anyway but smartly using his body and skating to protect the puck and then slip by the opposition.

I can't imagine he makes the team but I mean if he keeps playing like he did last night, as one of our best defensemen, he could very well get 9 games.
