Watched him play 30+ times in the past 2 seasons... First off I'm gunna start by saying the guy is a physical beast.. Plays 30-35 minutes a night, very good puck skills and very surprising speed for being 6'2. A sleeper in this draft for sure... Reminds me Bogosian in his draft year.

He tweeted that he was headed to Montreal for the Habs combine, which is tomorrow. Not surprised one bit, seems like exactly the type of prospect Timmins likes on D, his ''high end upside'' projection is quite high.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Habs try to trade up from early 2nd round to get him, I doubt it's possible though. I have a hard time seeing him being available after 18 or so.

He is going 15th overall to Ottawa if he is still on the board.

Maybe, but you never know. Ottawa might love him, and be convinced that is who they are going to take, and it could all change on draft night when someone they never thought would be there is suddenly there at 15

Of course. If a guy like Rielly drops then you take him for sure.

Easy to say, but I expect he will be on the board past 15. The problem are there are just so many d men available this year that it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. You had to stand out this year, and he just did not.

I have no issue saying Murray, Dumba, Reilly, Trouba, Ceci, Reinhart will go before him. Maatta, Finn and Lindholm probably, and possibly Pouliott.

Koekkoek is below most of them in pretty much every list I have seen. And from what I have seen of these D men its deserved too.

He certainly has a shot to be a lot better than any of these d men, and I like his game, but at this point the others are better known more highly rated commodities.

Matt Finn and Maatta aren't as highly rated by Ottawa. I have a good source on this one. They are both passive while Koekkoek is a go-getter.

and there's a reason why he didn't stand out. It's a pretty obvious one. That won't hurt Rielly either.

TBL takes Coco before Ceci, Maatta and Finn. The run on d-men continues.

Is this guy the most under the radar top-10 pick in recent memory or what? Virtually no press about him before or after the draft, or even at the time of his selection despite being a surprise pick. I know he was injured almost all of last year but I'm very interested to see how he progresses this season and if he gets an invitation to Canada's World Junior camp, especially considering Yzerman and Al Murray's connections with Hockey Canada.

Koekkoek and Morgan Rielly played together at Notre Dame (along with Stefan Matteau) and Al Murray lives just down the road in Regina so I think he thinks he has a bit of an inside track on him. I remember at the time people were blown away by Rielly's skating but Koekkoek's performance at the Telus Cup was simply amazing and he won top defenseman and MVP of the entire tournament.

I disagree with that. Koekkoek had numerous things on thing, however, he was injured so since no news ever emerged, its understand that no new articles were written :)

But it was quite well known that Koekkoek had top 10 draft skill, he was still raw and being injured never allowed him to write off any of his question marks (take it as a good or bad thing...)

Koekkoek has been healthy this year and his stats look good. How has he looked live?

Probably hurt his shoulder in that extremely awkward looking fight he had.

He's been an workhorse for a weak Windsor blueline. I don't see any reason why his game wouldn't translate to the pros. I always have a tougher time judging blueliners at the junior level though.

#OHL Windsor #Spitfires @SpitsHockey d-man & #NHL Tampa Bay #Lightning prospect Slater Koekkoek needs shoulder surgery. Done for the season.

Not good. 3rd big surgery in 3 years. IIRC he also had a shoulder issue + surgery his draft year.

He was being arguably the best d-man in the OHL and for getting in an unnecesary fight he injures his shoulder again...

awful news... i know hes been injured very frequently, is it the same shoulder?

Shoulder injuries almost always occur after the initial damage has been done.

Fight or no fight he would of hurt his shoulder eventually. It realistically is good that both of his shoulders will be repaired by top end doctors before his pro career begins.

Imagine how scary TB would be with Forsberg right now. Wow.

I still think Koekkoek will be a solid NHLer though, but probably more as a #3 D than a top pairing guy.
