LD Samuel Morin (2013, 11th, PHI)

actually, morin plays the same game, maybe less physical but he is a good hitter and can defend himslef in a fight !!

I read somewhere they have the same speed. I guess it will depend on teams' perception of the way they are going to develop

Again, I haven't seen much of Morin, but I highly doubt he brings the same devastating physical game that Zadorov does. That's not to say that Morin isn't physical, and I'd wager he's probably more consistently physical, but when Zadorov steps up, he destroys other players. He demolishes guys. That's something scouts love, to go along with his size, skating and puck-moving ability (for a big man).

Intriguing prospect. I don't really see a flaw in his game, but then again he doesn't have any big strenght either other than being big. He does skate well for a guy his size, but so does Keith Aulie and he's nothing special. Morin doesn't have much offensive potential imo, but he could become a solid shut-down guy. Not a prospect I would take in the first round... but he's a wildcard. We'll see.

Such a deep year for the Q...

I'm from Rimouski, I've seen Morin 40-50+ times and this is to me the most accurate description of Morin.

What buggles my mind is that some people on the Habs forum who haven't seen him of the year think he has big untapped offensive potential, when he is fundamentally a defensive d-men. He'll prefer to shoot the puck on the boards or in the corner rather than take a risky slapper from the point. That's just his game, without a risk. But he is a ROCK in defense, seriously. He was on the first PK unit all year long and was a first choice option for coach Beausoleil for defensive missions.

He doesn't have much of a mean streak and doesn't use that much of his enormous size. Sometimes, it seems like he plays like he is 6'1 : with good positionning, impressing speed for his size and hockey IQ to stop people. Despite all of that, he is still a great defensive shutdown d-men in the Q, at 17, which means that he has ALOT of upside if he can learn to better use his size. Then again, when you think he isn't that physical and can't use his size, he'll land that hard hit or pick up a fight and destroy the other guy, and it leaves you wondering if you are watching a second version of Karparaitis in waiting.

I think Morin is a surefire NHLer. What is up to debates is whether he'll be a bonafide top 2 defensive all-around defender, or just a top 5-6 defender that you use 15-16 minutes a game.

Okay guys saw Zadorov and Morin in back to back games here in Ottawa/Gatineau in February so for the comparaison between the two, Morin is way better defensively, doesn't run around chasing the puck carrier like Zadorov does alot of times, he keeps it simple. Zadorov has a better offensive potential which is why alot have him way higher than Morin. IMO they are really close. Zadorov is a bit more mean, looking to make that big hit while Morin is going to make the hit if it comes to him. Morin is more natural in blocking shots. He's not an offensive nor a two-way guy but I've seen him jumped in the play as the 4th man at times. He has a good breakout tape-to-tape pass and I also saw him skate the puck out of his zone himself. One of his strenght is the way he reads plays, his head is always moving looking where is the 2nd or 3rd man coming. For his slapshot what I liked is that it's a bullet and that he keeps them low, about 1-2 feets off the ice but like some said the accuracy is not there alot off times (ex. P.K Subban this year it can be worked on). When he'll bulk up he'll be a beast. I hope Habs pick him in the 1st round.

Also I saw alot of Tinordi last year with London and in my opinion he's a much better skater and better with the puck than Tinordi (who was 19 years old while Mrin is a 17 years old). I would say a higher offensive upside than Tinordi but he's a shutdown d-man first. Don't think he'll put on Myers like numbers.

Craig Button tak on samuel morin:

“I don’t know where you find 6-foot-7 defencemen that can skate, that are tough physically, that are rugged, that can make a play with the puck. I don’t know where you find them. … I saw ZdenoChara play at that age. Zdeno was raw and I don’t think Zdeno was as polished at that age as this kid. We know what Zdeno has become. He’s one of the smartest players in the National Hockey League and we know the physical attributes. I think that I do believe that Samuel can develop that part of his game.”

He is ranked between 17 and 30 !! i really hope the leafs pick this guy

This kid has the biggest upside in the draft in my opinion. Huge potential and flying under the radar around here.

kid grew up a big hab fan and trains with bouillon in the summer. He's already said publicly he'd love to get drafted by Montreal. If he's available at 25 do the habs do it? they're already loaded at D and have a kid with a potentially similar skill set in 6'6 Jared Tinordi

This is what concerns me by taking him with our #25 pick; that he's just another version of someone we already have...if, by some miracle, he's still around at #34, then it's fate and he's ours, but I really believe that we need to grab a physical forward with our 1st rounder (and McCarron with #36)...;)

you can never have enough big, physical D-man. best case scenario every team should have 2 good PMD's and 4 solid shutdown D's

but i do hope he drops down to the 2nd round, would be nice if we could draft a solid foward with our 1st rounder and a good d-man with our 2nd rounder. tbh id be happy with either morin/mccoshen/morrisey, pretty sure all 3 of them are going to be stud's

Morin to me is very similar to Tinordi. I think he'll go in the teens or early 20s. If he gets to Montreal's pick it'll be interesting, he might be BPA but he'd be a little redundant with a big, rugged, left handed defensive dman with mobility who needs to fill out already there in Tinordi.

Zadorov is already filled out and has higher offensive potential. People need to keep in mind Zadorov was a CHL rookie and new to North America. I think he goes in the 5-15 range.

He's a towering defensive dman with a mean streak. Skates well for his size. Plays a simple and smart game. Moves good laterally. Could improve his foot speed. Dosn't bring much offensively. Will never be a top pairing guy but has potential to be a solid second or bottom pairing defender. Could be a steal or could be Boris Valabik 2.0.

If he can pivot and skate, he's better than Valabik.

People focus too much on the toughness and not enough on the agility when naming the next Chara.

Would having 2 giant and skilled defensemen really be a bad thing?

He's a better skater than Valakbik at the same age but he's very raw. His overall skill set and hockey IQ are average. He's a big frame and mobile but there's not much beyong that. I've watched players come and go and I don't think he'll ever be anything more than a bottom pairing defenceman..
