LD Rasmus Sandin - Rogle BK, SHL (2018, 29th, TOR)

No Liljegren did not look years away. Both looked pretty good in pre-season.

Liljegren is up and down depending on when you watch him.

Sometimes he's got great gap control, is very aggressive at transitioning the puck. Other times, he looks like a flustered Gardiner.

I feel like if all goes well, liljegren will turn into a rhd gardiner with hopefully less gaffes and Sandin will turn into a vlasic type dman *knock on wood

My expectations for Liljgren are low... I hope I'm wrong, of course; but I think he just does not have the hockey sense.

Yikes.

Kid will be all right, but still has a lot of work to do at the pro level. Good tools for sure though he’s not as polished as Liljegren was coming in last year.
He’s more polished and pro-ready than Liljegren was at the same age.

Sandin outperformed Liljegren in this year’s camp despite being a year younger, and TL had a good camp so that’s saying something.

I must have watched a different camp. Liljegren at least got on the preseason scoresheet if I recall, while Sandin did not.

What BM14 means is that a defenceman's job is to prevent goals first and foremost. If a defenceman is not on the scoresheet it's not a big deal.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you. But every year Norris candidates are selected primarily by offensive production, secondarily by shot suppression.

I get that, but this team has a lot of offensive defenceman (Reilly, Gardiner, Liljegren, even Zaitsev that one year). Like someone said earlier, Sandin will be a Vlasic type stay at home Dman. The Leafs need those types.

I'm not sure Sandin projects to be a "Stay at Home" guy, does he? He's got some good offensive tools, as well. He's more of a top-4, two-way threat, I think.

Where are people getting this Vlasic comparison from? Sandin isn’t a defensive dman/stay at home dman and I wouldn’t even call him good defensively...he’s a PMD

I agree with your stylistic comparison, but he's actually extremely good defensively. it's his offense that needs more work
