Watched him a ton. He basically is a forward playing defense except he can hold his own somehwat defensively. Comparisons to Duncan Keith are perfect. He has wonderful offensive talent and hockey IQ as well as great skating ability.

He was used as a forward a few games in his freshman year I believe as well.

I don't think he was a ever a forward his frosh year. We may have had 3 d out there at the same time. Happened with Leopold-Ballard and Martin at times. A few time EJ, Goligoski and Vanelli ended up on the ice at once. None were regular shifted as a forward but have been out for an extra shift.

Our D under Lucia have always rushed and been caught deep. Best times were when Kessel or Vanek were the only ones back on a 2:1. Vanek had some ugly moments, Kessel's moments were actually pretty good.

At this point i do not think Reilly will ever add too much bulk. Paul Martin was a bean pole at the U, he (Martin) was one of the strongest and best conditioned players the U has seen.

With his IQ and quick first pass he can avoid being hit and carve out a nice career in the NHL. Reminds be alot of Goligoski at the U. Smooth with no panic. Another non hilking d man that turned out very nice as did Leddy.

Looks like he's starting the year off very well, can anyone who has seen him this year give any updates?

thanks for the reply, I've seen your posts on the Columbus board and would hope you would pop in

Hoping he signs with the Jackets.

Gopher fan here.

I sure as heck hope not!

I watched Mike Reilly even closer this year and it astonishes me how well he is able to move up in the play. Just about every time he is on the ice the puck seems to find its way onto his stick. He'll make a breakout pass and then skate up the weak side of the ice looking for a rink wide pass and is always open.

A couple comparisons I would say would be to Duncan Keith and Jared Spurgeon. All three have hockey IQ off the charts and can hold their own defensively by being able to use that high IQ. The Minnesota Gophers put a big emphasis on shot blocking so he's not afraid to do that. Anyone has questions about him ask me and ask away! I love talking about him!

I see how it is, trying to steal our prospects. Not gonna happen! He'd look real good next to Murray!(if he can stay healthy)

Yeah I have a question, but its not really about his game. Are you hearing anything on him possibly leaving for the NHL after this season? And if so, do you believe it will be with Columbus?

You will have a hard time finding a Gopher fan or media person that thinks he'll be back next year. We know Skjei and Reilly are gone after this year.

Yeah it's pretty hard to imagine them staying. Only way I can imagine Reilly staying for his senior year is if Adam Wilcox decides to stay as well (which I don't really see happening)

I wouldn't see any reason why Reilly wouldn't want to sign with the jackets. Unless other people have heard stuff that I haven't.

What are the chances he joins his brother Morgan in Toronto?

Agree with the similarities to Spurgeon.

Next Justin Schultz/Kevin Hayes situation.

Dispatch writer Aaron Portzline does fan chats, and this was said in the chat today.

Comment From Nate
Have you heard anything from the organization or elsewhere re: Mike Reilly's future with the club? His interview with Rimer a few weeks ago in Minny wasn't too convincing that he's excited to sign here. As always, thanks for the great coverage. I'll hang up and listen.

Portzline:
Just chatting with those around this kid in the last half-year or so, I don't see why this kid would sign with Columbus now. My opinion, he's going to wait until August and enjoy the bidding war.

If you need an NHL defenseman, get ready for a young stud to be ready this summer for free.

Flyers went through the same with Gostisbehere last season. It was nerve racking, hope he signs.

Any other Gopher fans want to back me up that he's been a disappointment this year defensively (and therefore overall)?

I really don't understand why he wouldn't wanna go to CBJ if this is true. IMO, they have one of the best group of forward prospects in NHL and he is in a great situation.

Lots of bodies ahead of him on D though. TSN even had an article today about Columbus' surplus of defensemen.

Schultz left a franchise in great shape to go to one in terrible shape because they would guarantee him playing time. Could be a similar situation.

Not quite. Gostisbehere would have had to return to college for another full year to reach UFA status. For him, it was sign with the Flyers or take another full year of college hockey (with nothing left to win) in order to hit UFA.

Reilly's rights expire this August for Columbus. The fact that he went back this season has the writing on the wall, unfortunately. He's going to finish this season out, and then he'll be able to pick his team. It no longer makes sense for him to sign with Columbus before hearing pitches from other teams since there's no longer a time benefit for signing earlier.
