Kid's going to be a good one. You can see it with the way he plays. Question is- how good will he become defensively because I have little doubt he'll be damn good in the offensive zone and on the breakout.

he's never going to be a Slavin/Tanev shutdown type, but what will make him effective defensively is his ability to get out of the d-zone with his speed, agility, and transition game. He's the epitome of "your best defense is a good offense".

Yeah, but the way some are talking about him makes it sound like he's terrible defensively, or he'll only be great offensively and subpar in the D zone.

Truth is, I don't know many 19-year-old players that can step right into the NHL playoffs with only a few regular season games to prep and look good doing it. I think he has more defensive potential than some posters give him credit for.

It's wild how much a player can grow defensively over the course of 5 years. He may surprise quite a few posters here, or maybe he'll prove them right. Time will tell!

Didn't watch the game, was Hamilton that bad haha?
Atrocious.

Insanely overdramatic. He was 4th in the league amongst Dmen in the regular season and very likely a top 10 Norris finish. He didn’t have an actively great playoffs but not anywhere near as bad as some of you reactionary fans are making it seem.
Hamilton is absolute garbage. Probably the worst contract in the league.

Pretty awful comparison. Subban’s game was always reliant on his physical skills and abilities. Hamilton was always a slow and a sometimes lumbering skater. His best asset is his IQ, knowing when to jump into the play, and getting shots from the point.
His IQ? Have you never watched him play?

You have to be joking.
I am not. He puts up points but is a complete liability in his own end.

4th most points in the league for defenseman in the regular season - yeah by far the worst contract in the league.

GTFO with the hot takes. Stick to making awful trade proposals.
Yep, and a total liability in his own end, especially in the playoffs.

He’s no Adam Larsson to you. That’s understood.

Lol, man.
Larsson>>>>>>>>

I’m usually able to refrain from biting on your melodrama
Like...Vanecek sucking and NJ riding Schmid? Yea, I was way off on that one. That Luke Hughes is better than half our dmen straight out of college? Yea, way off there. Sorry you think these playoffs were a one off for Hamilton, I guess Boston, Calgary and Carolina were wrong as well. If you can't see the faults in his game I don't know what to tell you.

I disagree, he plays with no intensity, doesn't handle the puck well in his own end, is atrocious against the rush, isn't physical and loses coverage.

Yes he is elite offensively at the blueline but you are running the risk of him being a complete black hole in his own end very soon. Think a Subban fall from grace.

Severson outplayed him by leaps and bounds this postseason.

Good lord Severson had his typical brain dead plays while playing on the 3rd pair.

Hamilton injured his hand at the end of the Rangers series, so badly that surgery is a possibility but, yes, no intensity because he doesn’t care.

Hamilton had 74 points and 22 goals and the Devils don’t get into the 2023 Playoffs without him. Severson certainly wasn’t getting us into them while on the 1st pair.

My post was before learning his hand was messed up.

We have to live with “Devils fans said Bratt is better than Tkachuk” on the main boards now because Mr Gaudreau Super Fan needed to pump his goofball “Matthew Tkachuk is complimentary scoring forward” nonsense.

You were wrong about Severson though and should have realized Hamilton was likely injured. (I assumed he was.)

I disagree with Severson, I thought he played an excellent blend of offense/physical game. I also thought he defended the rush quite well. Sure he had the odd turnover but when you aren't going off the glass every time, mistakes are bound to happen.

Yea, maybe I should have picked up on Hamilton injury but it sure didn't stop him from shooting every chance he could. It isn't as if he was a dominant defensmen in the first round either.

I will give him a free pass this year but if he underperforms next year, I certainly won't.

I absolutely agree 100%. Severson looked really good during the playoffs. He had great edge work, had good outlet passes and played decent and (surprisingly) physical defense. I was really impressed by him.

Luke is the man and I was very skeptical of how NHL ready he would be. I was blown away with his smarts and decision making with the puck. He has the natural talent to get away from forecheckers, and he has the smarts to make the right play. His breakout passes were impressive, and his vision down the ice was incredible.

I’m really excited about his near and long term future, I was worried at first, now i’m confident he can be a star defenseman in this league.

Sure it could have waited two days but at the time, given the information I had, it was completely fair. Are we to assume Mercer was injured as well? Injuries will only give you so much leeway IMO. Most are hurt this time of year.

Exactly my point. Saying things like “need to get out of that contract ASAP” based on a few game stretch is reactionary
