It would be interesting to see which of Power, Hughes and Edvinsson would end up being the best defenceman of the 2021 NHL Draft. The latter is excelling in the SHL early this season and is earning top line minutes with 6 points on a team that has difficulty scoring goals.
Yes and there are still about a half dozen others who also could develop . Clarke Lambos Cuelemon -(spelling ?) Svozil etc etc .
Juke being almost a year younger than all of them though where he is behind in experience and growing .

True but as a Michigan fan, I am partial to those 3 I mentioned since they all have Michigan connections either as coming from the state, going to college there or being a Redwings draft pick while at the same time being the highest drafted defenceman at 1,4 and 6 of the 2021 NHL draft.

I really like the fact that Luke is almost a full year behind the rest of his draft mates and still played well enough ti be comparable to the others in his draft class . Hopefully he takes big steps this year and has some more height in him lol

Love Hughes. Had him as the clear #2 dman in the draft. (Was my #1 for a long time).

Should have a great career in NJ.

Interesting nhl.com article before the NHL draft comparing Hughes and Edvinsson.

2021 NHL Draft: Simon Edvinsson vs. Luke Hughes

In the article one observer compares Hughes to Reilly and thinks Hughes has a higher ceiling than Edvinsson particularly on offense.

On the other hand, another describes the 6'6" Edvinsson's skating as NHL level already and praises his hockey IQ.

"I just think [Edvinsson's] hockey sense is off the charts. The skating's there, the size is there. I just think the way he's able to process the game, whether it's a play coming at him or him carrying the play the other way, he's just able to process it on a different level."

All those attributes are on display this early in the SHL this season as he is getting top line minutes for Frolunda gaining 6 points for an offensively challenged team while playing solid physical defence in what some observers described as almost mistake free hockey.

During the preseason, the Dallas GM Jim Nill was quoted as saying that they had Simon Edvinsson rated ahead of even #1 2021 NHL draft pick Owen Power.

he finished top 5 because he scored 20 goals and had 72 points that one year. If Hughes turns into a <10 goal, 40ish point offensive dman like Rielly then he was a waste of a 4th overall pick. We are hoping Ty Smith has that role covered.

Dude this is such a bad take as he is 9th in points for Dmen over the last 4 years and 5th in ESP

NHL Stats

Agree but for me personally I don’t love the comparison or hoping Hughes projects to be like Reilly but simply because I don’t really care for Reilly as a player. I want our #1 prospect to be likened to a player I really enjoy watching play lol . How about a lesser version of Pietrangelo lol

He’s more similar to Chabot.

Hey thanks for posting that, really appreciate it!

Scouts are obviously way smarter than me, and Yzerman usually crushes it, but for me I was not a huge Edvinsson guy coming into the draft. I don't see the offensive upside nor the elite hockey sense.

I hope Im wrong though!

A lot of Swedish observers have been really positive about Edvinsson performance this season as an 18 y.o. including Sabres defenceman and former #1 draft pick Rasmus Dahlin who also excelled as an 18 y.o. during his draft year.

Here is a translation of a Swedish article about his breakthrough performance this year:

Hughes vs Edvinsson right now this present day , think one has the advantage over the other if draft was right now? Or way too hard to say and compare

Probably Power vs. Edvinsson to be honest. If NJD didn't pick Hughes at 4 then I don't think he gets picked until 9 or 10 or even later.

If the draft was right now you're talking Eklund and Edvinsson going between 1 and 4 with Power and Benier still solidly in that range.

I think it's a coin-flip personally. Both drafted two slots apart, both have started their respective seasons very well.

I think Hughes' play for Michigan so far is more likely to reinforce New Jersey's decision than it is to give them any second thoughts.

Are you insinuating that the only reason Hughes was taken 4th is because of Jack? Luke was seen as a top 5 pick even before the draft order was solidified - he was taken exactly where he was projected to go.

*edit: ahh I see you’re a Swedish hockey fan. That’s why Eklund and Edvinsson suddenly should have went 1 and 2 in the draft

I'll have to disagree with you here. Obviously Power and Edvinsson are easier to compare given their sizes and what not, but Hughes and Clarke were both clearly up there with them as the top-4 defenseman and everyone had them in random orders given their preferences. I don't think any would've slid out of the top-10 at all. I'm sure every pick in the top-9 is happy with what they have chosen so far, and other than Eklund making the Sharks I don't think anyone moves up in a re-draft today.

I said they should have gone top 4, not 1 and 2. (Though I would have taken Eklund at 1 for certain)

Luke Hughes was lower on a lot of lists. Most had him nowhere in the top 5, some even outside of the top 10. Am I insinuating that Hughes went at 4 because of his brother? Nope. I'm outright saying it.

The kid has the potential to be a pretty good hockey player, but I don't think Columbus, Detroit, San Jose and possibly even LA pick him over who they picked 5 through 8.

Uhhhh...
Luke Hughes: 2021 NHL Draft Prospect Profile; A Highly Skilled Defenseman With Huge Offensive Upside

"Here are some of the most recent rankings:
9 of these 13 rankings have Luke ranked inside the top 5.

The Dallas GM was quoted as saying during the preseason that they had Edvinsson rated ahead of even Owen Power at #1.

Post draft, Edvinsson's performance in Sweden with Frolunda early this season is being called a breakthrough by Swedish observers and is reminiscent of what Seider is doing at Detroit as an NHL rookie with 3 points in 2 games so far averaging 22:55 TOI, and playing in all kinds of situations including on both special teams to start his NHL career. Interestingly Detroit drafted both players at #6 in their respective drafts and have the potential to be among the best from their draft class when all is said and done.

In today's game, Edvinsson played a season high 25:18, almost 4 minutes more than anyone else on his team. That is how much his team depends upon him as an 18 y.o. rookie defenceman with Frolunda.

As much as I like Luke Hughes(and his brothers), I would have to say I am much more impressed by the progress Edvinsson has made in the SHL early this season as a top line defenceman with some mentioning that that he has the potential to be a franchise NHL defenceman down the road just like Seider.

Fredrik Janlind of http://GP.se writes: "His performance is reminiscent of Rasmus Dahlin's breakthrough. With Dahlin it was the offensive upside that was without equal. With Edvinsson it's the entire package. He has barely any weaknesses."

I also believe that Luke Hughes benefited from the impact and reputation of his brothers in the NHL with the name recognition allowing him to be drafted higher than he would otherwise would have.

And, as I recall Edvinsson's aggregate was well outside that (top 5). Looks like he's had a good ten games to start the season, cool. I don't think New Jersey is bothered much given the reports out of Michigan so far, certainly not to change their mind.

Yeah well if you disregard those 9 main lists he was nowhere near top 5!
