How has this player been?

Watched him last Tuesday, played well as usual. Great stick and gap control defensively. Moves the puck well.

He plays a VERY safe game, doesn't take any risks at all. It occurs to me that he plays this way at the junior level to train himself to avoid foolish, risky, habitable plays when he makes the jump to pro. He's got pretty good skill with the puck, that's quite evident.

A knock on him is that while he skates smoothly and skates efficiently, his top speed appears to need an extra gear. Also that he could assert his offensive skill more often but going back to the last paragraph, for me is a wait-and-see situation.

In the future, I think it's fair to say he ultimately becomes a "#3" defenseman. He's an NHL player regardless.

Do you really think that's all his potential?

As that poster said, he is a very safe player who doesn't have a high ceiling, but a high floor. Offencive potential was overrated by NHL scouts since he got an absurd amount of points on the powerplay last season. Never really replicated or surpass his stat line this year, which shows that his offencive potential is limited.

Reminds me of Alzner as one of those players who are underappreciated, but a player you wouldn't mind getting rid of due to cap concerns or lack of available room. I think he's a solid defender that absolutely should be an NHL player, but better players were drafted after him.

Now in terms of his potential, I think #5-6 is quite low. I mean, Johansen isn't the most talented player, but he isn't useless either that needs sheltered minutes. He should become a solid #4 who has little weaknesses neither amazing strengths based upon what I've seen.

Do you really think that's all his potential?

I think he has 2nd pairing potential, he will complement a rover type D man very well.

Given his smarts, some added size, and the right chemistry/team makeup, I could easily see him playing 20 minutes a night within the next few years.

They might not be the most spectacular 20 minutes you ever watch, but by the same token, they won't leave you screaming at your TV. A la Beaulieu (or your underwhelming late 1st D here).

Is he a complete bust or is his career salvageable as a bottom pairing defensemen? It looks like he barely played this season. Was that due to injury?

Almost nothing about his injury situation. But hard to see him jumping some of the others in the Caps’ system with such limited ice time.
