Yea, wait.... Wat?

I dont recall any mocks that had McCabe over Skjei... Why would you eat a hat about it? Your assessment must be quite different from 90% of scouts.

YouTube eating of hat please.

I haven't been to any Gophers games yet so I haven't been able to fully analyze his play but from what I've seen on TV, Skjei has been solid so far. IMO he has been the better of the two highly touted freshmen D that came in for the Gophers this year, the other being Mike Reilly. He hasn't had many freshman moments and doesn't look out of place at this level. He's pretty much been what I expected; good skater, not very physical, responsible defensively, and doesn't stand out too much (good or bad).

he's Nigel Williams.

Your typical "jeans model" prospect, just a big kid who can skate well. Bad hockey sense, soft for his size, no real offensive identity. If he goes before Jake McCabe I'll eat my hat.

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I really should start saving ridiculous claims like this (like Toronto fans saying: "If Grigorenko or Forsberg are available at 5, there's no way Burke won't pick one of them. Plus the subsequent paragraphs of incorrect justification)

I did that one year when I just had enough. Link.

If he ever does. I was never impressed with the kid. I'm gonna say he's a longshot.

Ranger scouts obviously love him. They're great at developing defensemen and Skjei has no pressure to immediately crack the lineup like McDonagh circa 2009-10.

I'd be shocked if he isn't a top 4 d-man tbh.

Well I'll agree that NYR is probably the best place for him to develop...I'll let him prove me wrong. I was unimpressed by him.

Stayed w/ Minnesota.

4 gp - 1g 1a - 2pts.

anyone who has seen him so far want to comment?

On TV he looks the same as before. All the physical tools are there, great skater, great mobility, good decisions with the puck, however the skill and offensive upside is limited in my assessment. Could be a good minute munching puck mover in the 2nd pairing role if he reaches his upside.

Agreed

Skjei is a very on-and-off defenseman. You either love him or hate him. Shrader from FC and you seem to really hate him but I'm in the other school. Saw two games and really loved his mobility because he's a 6-3 guy that really moves smoothly and I love seeing him being able to carry the puck from end to end.

After hearing other people's opinion, it can be concluded that Skjei's hockey sense is under question. He has all the tools but needs to understand when he can use them and when to just do the simple plays.

If he puts that together, he is going to be a thing of beauty.

I don't agree. I think his offensive potential is huge, but his ability to play the other side of the rink is in question. I think he's either around a #2 puck moving defenseman, or nothing at all. That is assuming he keeps everything else equal (e.g his style of play).

So again, we're back to the Tom Poti comparison :)

(I'm not a Tom Poti fan by any means, but if Skjei turns into Poti, that's not too bad for a 29 pick.)

Bump

What happened to the offensive production?

He did just what i expected.

Played in 35 games and i can only remember Skjei from a few of them.

I did not expect much from him in the O department.

Nate Schmidt has been one of the leading socring D men for two years now in the NCAA.

Ben Marshall has been a solid scorer and was in the USHL.

We brought in Reilly who tore up the BCHL.

Skjei was not asked to do much. Essentially don't get noticed. His play has been good but not great. Not all freshmen look good right away.

I would expect a big jump next year. Save this one until X-Mas.

Bump. I've been reading some good things about Skjei from Gophers fans on the Rangers board. Any other input?

He's really evolved offensively this season vs what I remember from last year. Minnesota's defensemen are schematically very involved offensively. Shjei's benefited from and progressed due to that, as he shows a lot of confidence offensively. He remains a very good defensive player, especially with his feet and his stick. He made a fantastic breakup tonight right inside his own blueline after a turnover (due to a pass bouncing over his stick) at the other blueline. That play was really indicative of his game. He's a solid prospect for sure. Give him at least one more year before going pro and he'll likely make a mark in the AHL from the jump.

Well he's a pretty good skater still....

Thanks. People are saying that he reminds them of McDonagh. That's a pretty lofty comparison considering McDonagh is regarded as a top 10 D-man by a lot of people. Who does he remind you of?

A poor-man's McDonagh is pretty fair right now, as in I don't think he has top pairing NHL potential, but definitely a 2nd pairing guy.
