Have a buddy who plays at the same rink he does...said this:
"honestly don't know what they are thinking. I mean kids got size and can skate well and has decent vision and smarts, but not developed much, and I don't see anything special in him. My mind was blown when I heard it."

Sounds like a throwaway pick.

I mean good for him, but don't really like seeing my team throw away an opportunity to add a real prospect.

Isn't this the epitome of a decent prospect?

Andong Song first Chinese-born player picked in NHL draft. Chinese TV reporter following Song said 2.5M were watching live in China today

What are the odds this guy actually pans out? Or is this more of a business strategy?

Remember though, this is China we're talking about, so that's only 0.18% of the population.
That's the equivalent of only 60K in Canada.

I'd say there weren't many watching round 2 today, especially in the 6th round. It is really just the die hards that pay attention today.

Growth is growth - especially in the non-markets. It's still cool to see it happening.

A large part of that 2.5M is probably going to stay up on his progression and maybe become larger hockey fans due to it.

Isles could have drafted:

Sebastian Aho (SWE)
Tyler Soy
Veini Vehviläinen
Gustav Franzen
Denis Godla

I was just about to make a thread about him, maybe the worst pick ever, what were the Isles thinking, oh wait, they don't, this was the owners pick obv.

no matter the success story, there will always be some to shoot it down.

good for China and this kid, only going to broaden the scope of the NHL.

Twice in the U18s, in D2B...

If this kid was actually any good, he would've scored way more points at that level

From what I've seen of video, he looks to be two-way D-man, emphasis on the defensive end.

Late pick with a lot of positives in his corner on and off the ice. Can't slag it much.

He'll play for the new Vegas team, he'll be terrible of course, but the NHL will sign a lucrative rights deal with a Chinese broadcaster.

new revenue streams more important than players who can, you know, actually play the game.

20% or so of 2nd rounders make the NHL and people are complaining about a 7th round pick being thrown away?

Omg such poor asset management, could've been used as a pick to sweeten a deal for Matthews next year!!!!!1!
