Im going to go against some of the other wings fans here. The 2nd round drafting those years was plain bad.
In the same time frame:
Anaheim: LaCombe, Zellweger, Colangelo
Boston: Lohrei
Buffalo: Peterka
Carolina: Kotchetkov, Nikishin
Chicago: Colton Dach, Vlasic
Dallas: Stankoven

And this is jsut me going through a few teams alphabetically. Most teams had one or two 2nd rounders those years at most, we had among the most in the whole league with 3 in multiple years and there’s very little to show for it.

Wallinder is nearly 2 years younger than Lohrei, just as a reference. It takes time for defense to develop which almost feels redundant to say when we're seeing the result of that development time with Johansson right now.

Also I personally don't understand the obsession with the 2nd round. Maybe Colangelo and his 2 NHL points was a better pick than Wallinder. Maybe. Lacombe and Zellweger also look like good picks. Does it matter when they drafted Zegras and Drysdale? Mactavish is also not really looking special, yet. No team has a 100% success rate in every round of every draft.

Anaheim also drafted Zegras and Drysdale in the top 10 those years who are both looking incredibly disappointing. Give me good 1st round drafting over good 2nd round drafting all day, every day, twice on sunday and anyday.
I agree with you, as I said earlier in the thread. Yzerman has absolutely knocked 1st round drafting out of the park, so our drafting has been quite good overall with that in mind. But with better 2nd round drafting we’d be at that next level. Hopefully that next group of Buch, Augustine, Plante etc can turn it around.

Statistically, only about 25% of 2nd round picks go on to play 300+ NHL games.
Right, but if you have 7 picks over 3 years and none hit, that’s a 0.75^7 chance of having 0 picks play 300+ games. Thats a 13% chance.

Johansson looks to be on the right track though.
