Value of: Lawson Crouse

Was just agreeing with a fellow poster on the Utah board that I'm ready to move on from him. Due to it being because his play has declined so much from where he used to be, I can't imagine his trade value is very high right now. However, I'd rather simply cut bait on him than wait until the offseason to see if improved play makes his trade value go up in a future trade (or simply that he returns to contributing to the team for the future). Figured I'd start a thread about him to see what fans of other teams think of him, and what they think their team might be willing to part with for him.

I'm not sure what kind of interest he'd generate. I'm not convinced he'd be very much of a value add to teams looking to make a deep playoff run, so maybe it's more like just a change of scenery would help him turn things around for a team that isn't a contender yet. When he's on his game, he's about a middle six power forward. Reached the 20-goal mark last season and the year before that, with a few more goals than assists, so not quite 50 points. However, he has only 8 goals and 4 assists in 57 games so far this season.

Like the person I was agreeing with, I'd prefer a hockey trade, perhaps straight across for a similar player who's also a reclamation project, but I suppose I'd be happy with some draft capital as well. He's in year 3 of 5 on his contract with a cap hit of $4.3 million, and will become a UFA afterwards. I'd assume we'd have to retain some salary in order to make a trade worth our while, since low trade value with that much of a cap hit is almost worthless in itself.

When the season was a month or two or three in - and I checked him out - it seemed to me like Utah had so many young guys that were good and getting chances that Crouse was pushed out a bit.

So for awhile I was thinking that would change. But seeing his season long icetime ebb and flow well under 16 minutes most games through today - I dunno.

I can’t tell if this is a thing where Utah has guys who are better taking icetime and when Crouse gets time in those moments it’s a bad outcome, but there’s a real valuable player there, or if he’s bad and cooked.

Almost sounds like 1 for 1 could make sense then, if Chicago has the cap space for Crouse’s contract. In that case, we could just cut bait from Kurashev in the scenario that he doesn’t even play well enough to warrant giving a qualifying offer.

I would do this trade as a Habs fan without any addition on the part of Utah, though in terms of asset management during negotiations, I would try to squeeze out a mid-to-late round (4th) draft pick or two.

However, I have a very low opinion of Newhook, and Utah would be likely to regret the deal, in my opinion.

I don’t have a very high opinion of Crouse either. However, if we retain then I don’t think I’d want to give up a draft pick along with him for Newhook. If we don’t retain, I could justify a fourth round pick though.

This has been discussed in a fairly recent Crouse thread.......

But something around Crouse for Cozens makes a ton of sense for each team. Both teams need what the other player can bring if right (Crouse brings physicality and leadership to Buffalo, Cozens brings 2-way play and goal scoring to Utah).


The deal that was kinda thrown out there was Crouse and Kesselring for Cozens plus a pick. Would make sense from both sides to a point.

It's not. Domi stinks. He's scored more than 9 goals once in the past five years.

Hawks need to meet the floor next year too and are small up front in our prospect pool. Would make alot of sense

Crouse is big, fast and physical. Averages over 168 hits per season and 16 goals.

Bit of a slow year but he would be a great addition to many teams.

Oh, I wouldn't be asking for retention on Crouse. The trade largely sounds like a classic swap of players who have underperformed with the draft pick balancing out the difference in their contracts, which Montreal can absorb easily over Crouse's term.

Names being thrown out here (aside from Cozens) are laughable.

Newhook… Domi… Kurashev… Crouse is in an entirely different tier of player, especially considering what teams are looking to add heading into the playoffs.

Domi's G/60 and P/60 are slightly above Crouse's but like Lawson, Max isn't having the greatest year.

Crouse is bigger and younger so Utah deserves a 2nd for that and the salary retention.

Put him on Tavares' line with Nylander, I can see him getting 30.
