Confirmed with Link: Lavi and Housley fired

Said since he was hired that he's the head coach in waiting once the upper management decides they're going to tear it down or commit to a significant retool.

If trading Kreider, Zibanejad, and Panarin this summer is in the cards, this offseason is as good as any to pull the trigger on him.

I mean it’s about moving those guys off the roster so they can’t undermine the coach, then you allow a guy like Carle or muse to impliment their system and culture. We aren’t doing that until the losers are gone

When did I say I wanted Torts? I have no idea who the ideal coach is for this bunch when they've proven over & over & over they don't care who the coach is, they wind up tuning him out anyway.
No I didn’t say you did, I’m just using him as an example.

Right and this group is going to change, we know that. I guess I just want to see this guy get a crack given his success

I'm also way more interested what the roster is going to look like than who the next coach is, for the simple fact that this team is going nowhere without a major overhaul.

Putting up a bunch of empty calorie points when the team was basically out of it isn't exactly what I would call answering the bell. Make no mistake, even though they flirted with the 8th seed here & there, it was painfully obvious this team was going nowhere when they couldn't string together 3 wins in a row since November.
Mika was terrible for the better part of two seasons. That’s definitely on his permanent record. But for most of this season I don’t think he was a problem. If someone would give us even a little value for him, I’d be happy to do it. But realistically that’s not happening. And assuming it doesn’t I have no issue with bringing him back next year.

For better or worse it appears we're stuck with him, but for the part of the season that mattered he was a complete non-factor. Even when he began putting up points, he didn't stop with his maddening over passing & head scratching decisions. He was passing up shots at the absolute worst times during odd man rushes on so many occasions & we'd leave the zone without registering a SOG.

What that means moving forward is a complete crap shoot, but all we can do is hope he plays a little better as a 2C or 3C when there's less pressure to be the "guy".

If Dolan really is going to be more involved in things, Torts 2.0 is a very real possibility.

Tinfoil Hat Time: Drury is the man for the job.

Drury is GM, true, but his job isn't managing the team so much as managing Mr. D.

Hark -- consider the possibility that the biggest mistakes we attribute to GMCD are actually direct mandates from ownership:

"Trade that carcrashing Russian dissident!" (can't you imagine Buch giving JD lip in the locker room?)

"Sign Mika long term!!"

"Trade for Patrick Kane!"

"Hire Laviolette!"

"Sign Igor!"

the owner of this team may not be meddling in the day to day - at least not directly (!) - but he is absolutely involved in the biggest deals and decisions and has his own ideas about what should be done. Players he recognizes as being productive and marketable - Zibanejad, Panarin, Shesterkin (I-GOR *clap* *clap*) - are guys he forces the GM to keep long term. Those are the only guys he recognizes at all.

Does Drury seem so bad if his worst offenses are trading for Reilly Smith, trying an over the hill wheeler, goodrow acquisition (a learning opportunity of a mistake), and trading the 3rd for Soucy?

I think that a lot of the proactive moves - miller deal, peca/muse non-firing, decent drafting thesis, etc. can be seen as an accurate identification of the problems that plague this franchise. I actually think if he moves Kreider, Panarin, or both, acquires an LD, and makes a good coaching hire - someone adaptable to the strengths and weaknesses of this team - we could see a real bounce back.

Interesting they weren't fired outright as well.....report stated they'd be permitted to interview for a position on the new coaching staff. What those positions are have not been mentioned.
i assume the positions are the open ones: caterer, costume design consultancy coordination assistant, head-in-open-tiger-mouth-placer, mead wench. the standard stuff

One thing about retread coaches is that you need to try and find the guy that was the reason why a team succeeded, not that the talent got them there.

Trotz was a great coach and always made his talent play up a level. That was Laviolette at one point, but not anymore.

I don't know if there is someone in this cycle like that. I'd be open to Carle or other college coaches. None of Sullivan, BB, Quenneville, or even Deboer if he gets fired interest me. We need a rebrand, not a new coat of paint.

I'd rather go with Muse or Peca over those guys. You need fresh and younger right now.

Can't say 'm too sad to see the back of either coach. Still not sure why Housley wasn't offered up as a sacrifice back when everything started falling apart.
There's no 'right' coaching choice without fixing the underpinning issue that seem to be rife within the organization, so we are really just rolling the dice and hoping

Totally agree. He made a million head scratching passes, destroyed a million sticks, passed up a million good shots. It was to very maddening.
What I did like though was that when he had the puck on his stick he made things happen. He - finally - got into the drivers seat. Stopped being a passenger.

Yep. I think Drury has a good sense of what’s right and wrong with the team. His way of going about it is just unnecessarily messy.
That said, I think he’s on the right track moving Kreider and possibly Mika. Though it’s clear Mika actually answered the bell after a slow start. Move Kreider and I think it’s possible there’s the critical mass needed to change the leadership balance to guys more ready to handle it.

I want to add, I don’t think Kreider is some kind of bad guy. He and the rangers just need some time apart.

Drury was bashed often for a letter (that leaked) to other GMs saying Trouba and Kreider were available. My question is what was so bad about the letter? Isn't that his job as GM? If he called instead the call contents could have been leaked as well.
