guys, have you been noticing dylan davis in the past few months? he's really improved to a top tier rider. his rides have real confident, safe, smooth and mistake free. his timing has really been on point. he's riding just about as well as most of the top riders in the entire nation.

sure the mounts have been of higher quality this year, but the old dylan davis would have butchered some rides.

  • Brad Cox sent out nine horses across three tracks. He won four times.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $20 million.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 returned more than $91,000.
  • Race 10: Carl Spackler (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I Fourstardave Handicap. Despite his many accomplishments in his home state, Brown had never won this race named after a horse who owned Saratoga with wins in eight straight years among 100 lifetime starts. Carl Spackler is 9 6-1-0 with nearly a million in earnings. Gaffalione rode three winners including this race for his in-laws of e5 Racing (pictured below with the winning trainer):
1723599224326.png
  • Race 11: Carson's Run (Dylan Davis/Christophe Clement) finished stoutly in winning the $600,000 Grade I Saratoga Derby. A bargain for West Point Thoroughbreds as this $170,000 purchase has earned over $700,000 in seven starts.
  • Dylan Davis and Katie Davis, siblings, picked up mounts today and won.
  • Saffie Joseph was a perfect 2-for-2 and has now boosted his meet mark to 22 9-2-1 (41%).
Laurel (Maryland):
  • JG Torrealba won five times on six mounts. He won with his first four rides covering the opening six races. He is in his second year riding in the US following a non-racing background in Venezuela. Last year he plied his craft in Ohio mostly and also California.
  • Capitol Meet: Following racing at the Maryland state fair at Timonium, Laurel will have a Capitol Meet from Sept. 7 - Dec. 31.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Card: Seven stakes including three graded.
  • Mark Casse had a strong day going 5 2-2-1.
  • Race 5: Regalo (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) put on a show winning the first annual Petramalo Stakes by a nose and withstanding a furious rally from the runner up. Regalo was sent off at 17-to-1 and jockeyed for the lead the entire way.
  • Race 6: Carmelina (Mychel Sanchez/Butch Reid) had flashbacks to 2023 in winning the $100,000 Penny Chenery Stakes by a neck over Cap Classique (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell). Carmelina was winless in five starts this year as a 3-year-old but was a star last year when the PA-bred won four of six races.
1723427211016.png
  • Race 9: Trikari (John Velazquez/Graham Motion) won the Grade 2 $500,000 Secretariat Stakes named after well...Secretariat!
  • Race 10: Moira (Jose Ortiz/Kevin Attard) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Beverly D. Stakes by a head in a thriller. Moira was bred in Ontario and spent much of her career at Woodbine (ON) where she was entered for a race on Saturday. She has earned $1.8 million in 15 races.
  • Race 11: Nations Pride (William Buick/Charlie Appleby) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Arlington Million. The 5-year-old Irish bred has earned a remarkable $3.4 million in 18 starts, spending about half his career racing in spots outside North America.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Jay Bernardini went over a million in annual earnings for the third straight year and sixth time in the past eight campaigns. One of the most successful trainers at the shuttered Suffolk Downs (MA) he is now mostly in West Virginia and Ohio. He is at 24% this year, which would be his top mark since taking out his license in the 1980s. But his million in earnings is noticeable with just 290 starters (he sent out 500 starters in 2022) -- earnings per start is over $3,000 which, for a smaller-track trainer is strong and also a career best.
Ellis (Kentucky):
  • Card: Filled with stakes. Mostly chalk prevailed, favorites won the opening five races.
  • Race 6: Most Wanted (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $275,000 Ellis Park Derby.
  • Race 10: Pigalle (Luan Machado/Tom Drury) won the $175,000 Groupie Doll by a neck in a 3-way tight finish and at enormous odds of 23-to-1.
Emerald Downs (Washington):
  • Race 9: Five Star General (Joe Bravo/Grant Forster) won the $150,000 Longacres Mile by a held with a perfectly timed finish in a field of 11.

1723598712715.png

Del Mar (California):
  • Race 3: Getaway Car (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) was out for an exercise in a field of four otherwise described as the $150,000 Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes. The $700,000 Curlin colt was out for the second time. Baffert has another rising star in his barn.

I got a lot of exposure to Dylan Davis when he rode at Indiana Grand (now Horseshoe Indianapolis). I remember thinking that he was an excellent turf rider and asked a prominent trainer (forget who he was) whether my assessment of Davis on the turf was accurate. He agreed.

I've thought that his riding in New York has been good from the start for the most part. It's gotten better no doubt but so have the quality of his mounts.

Most of his mounts now are live and he doesn't command the respect at the windows which he should IMO. But that's a good thing:laugh:

Miami ScreamingEagle noted JG Torrealba's great day today at Laurel. He's not a secret anymore and seems to give almost every mount a very good ride. Going to be interesting to watch the trajectory of his career once he loses his bug.

I don't post much on this thread but, as always, MSE does a tremendous job. Thanks, MSE!

Good rider, just needed a chance as it can be tough to break into that colony but he comes from a deep family of riders and seemingly all are respected. He has improved and that is noticeable. I had hoped Lane Luzzi would try Monmouth instead of Saratoga for similar reasons but that is from a view afar.

It's always got to be a tough call for a rider to take the chance from being a dominant rider at a lower track or circuit (Davis-Indiana/Luzzi-Texas).

As you wrote, the NY jockey colony is a very tough nut to crack. Davis has done it. Luzzi has had decent success in some bottom claiming races in NY, but I doubt that's his goal. Interesting article I just found on him:

Evidently Monmouth was the initial starting point for him after the move from Texas.

I didn't read the link yet but he began at Laurel and then, IIRC, was injured at Gulf. I read today he is at Finger Lakes (NY) though perhaps going back and forth from-to Saratoga. His dad is his agent.

Laurel -- Sunday, August 18
Laurel closes shop for the rest of the month while the state fair at Timonium is ongoing. Sunday's card is very deep and goes into the early night.

Maryland, my Maryland...
  • Timonium -- 8/23/2024-9/2/2024
  • Laurel -- 9/7/2024-12/29/2024 -- and then likely into spring 2025.
  • Pimlico -- 2025 dates not released but the Preakness is scheduled to be run in Baltimore in May despite construction to the race track.
  • Laurel -- Probably late May into late August/September 2025, though not confirmed.
Sunday's finale:

After a meeting last night in Colorado, there appears to be life for Arapahoe to possibly conduct a 30-day meet from August 31 through November 3 citing proper permits and safety issues which include ancillary utilities such as electricity and water. Arapahoe appeared to be yet another track on the verge of extinction earlier this year but s heartbeat is getting stronger.

A horse foaled in North Carolina is in race 2 at Colonial today. I don't recall too many NC horses in recent years or even decades. South Carolina has a few training tracks and an occasional foal will run at places like Laurel especially with Hammy Smith training. But NC?

According to the Jockey Club, four horses were foaled in North Carolina in 2022 and as mentioned one will race today.

The Jockey Club stated that in the last 10 years Maryland and Ohio, among major racing states, have seen the biggest increases in horses foaled. Wyoming and Nebraska, among smaller racing states, have seen large gains in that time.

interesting list of states and canadian provinces that i saw at the jockey club site. it makes me wonder if one day if a trainer like nick zito or lukas would be tempted to train horses foaled from states that are not KY, FL, NY, etc. guys like cox, asmussen and pletcher are already tied up with the 6 digit yearlings so they can't be bothered with NC, WY, etc. i used zito and lukas as examples as their list of clients have dwindled over the years.
