I'm here to defend Scott Laughton
There is a lot going on, but it's not Laughton himself. It's more like Berube. If you want to blame anyone, blame him. There are theories out there and I'll share some:

1. Berube didn't get his guy. He's ultra pissed that B. Schenn is not a Leaf. For whatever reason he keeps putting Laughton out there to not succeed. He's supposed to be TOR's 3rd line center and he's not.

2. Scott Laughton drafted in the 1st round 20th overall by the Flyers in 2012. Forwards who are drafted in the 20's can be NHLers, but sometimes they don't make it. Laughton is what he is. His career highs in points are 43, 39, and 32. Those are not elite numbers! He should be playing around 15 minutes a night. Berube for whatever reason is not giving him that.

3. The third line (sometimes the 4th line) is unsettled and still a work in progress. Berube deserves praise for many things, but the bottom 6 is a mess. If TOR want to get past 1 or 2 rounds of playoff hockey he better get his ass in gear when it comes to his bottom 6. This can't be a blender line thing come April.

4. There was speculation that Laughton might have been brought in to play the wing. Not in the bottom 6, but in the top 6 (2nd line). The speculation is that Berube wants a heavier top 6. Both Knies/Laughton could be effective that way.

5. Berube might be playing chess with NHL scouts. It could be that he wants other teams to have a hard time guessing how TOR will match-up in the playoffs.

6. Laughton might be struggling a bit with his new environment. All he's known for quite some time is being a Flyer. He's going to need time to adjust.

He's had 4 different line combinations in 8 games. His most common linemate is Steven Lorentz. He's not being put in a position to succeed.

Also, why is he barely on the PK? Our penalty kill has sucked lately and he's actually pretty good at that. Stop putting Matthews on the PK, it's stupid. He's nothing special there, just competent. He is special 5v5, save more of his minutes for that.

So you're not here to defend Scott Laughton yet you're coming up with some bizarre conspiracies about Berube intentionally sabotaging him. That doesn't make any sense at all.

Those 2 things aren't compatible. Unfortunately the early looks of this trade look quite bad for Treliving.

I don't care how you digest it. I am here to defend Laughton. How good is anyone playing 10 min. mostly on the 4th line?

I don't see these as conspiracies. There is no secret plan to do something harmful to fans.

Doldrums - are you watching Laughton on the PK? No one player is more directly responsible for more PP goals against, than him. (since he got here.) Marner a close second.

He's played 11 minutes on the PK so far, I don't think that's enough to make an assessment compared to his solid performance there over his career.

Because his crappy play has resulted in him only getting 10 minutes. What is it about his game do you think would prompt the coach to give him more TOI? He's been bad dude, open your eyes.

Guy is a black hole, get over it.

I didn't expect much from Laughton. For what they gave up to him, I for sure wanted a marginal positive impact on the team.

Like others, I haven't seen that. The team seems to get dominated positionally when he is out there.

You think good things are just magically going to happen if we start giving him more ice time without him earning it?
I don't know. I think in your world, you would be much happier firing him in a rocket towards the sun. I could be wrong on that though.

There's nothing magical happening now, but I don't blame Laughton. "Earning" is not equal for every player. Most of the season Domi, Robertson, and Reaves didn't earn anything. Some speculate that Reaves might return for the playoffs. How did he earn that?

So what would be your idea then? have him play with one of the big four? He was advertised as a tough to play against, physical, great defensively type of C so perhaps his game could accommodate someone like Willy's? In theory he could possibly make a good winger for Tavares-Nylander.

I know he’s injured now and for the next couple of weeks, but I wish the Leafs had moved faster on the Carlo deal and got Frederic in it as well. He’s also a faux-centre like Laughton but at least he’s younger, bigger, and more of a psychopath. He’s also a UFA at the end of the year so that would be more headaches to deal with, but still.

I don't know. I am cutting him slack because it looks like TOR or Berube doesn't know. I only know based on insiders that TOR's shopping list priority was the following: 1. Winger 2. 3rd line C 3. Depth defenseman. Did they hit on all that with Laughton/Carlo? I don't know. I'm as confused as the next person why Laughton is all over Toronto's roster. Is he going to practice with JT and WN next week? I would be just as surprised as you.
