Who should the Bruins hire as their next Head Coach?

Here are Mick Colageo’s thoughts on a new head coach, if they move on from Sacco:

I’m getting hit with questions lately as to who will coach the Bruins next season. The short answer, if he becomes available, is Penguins coach Mike Sullivan. If Sullivan stays on the job in Pittsburgh, the Bruins will have a tougher time deciding whether to hire from outside the organization or to promote from within. The gut feeling here is Assistant Coach Jay Leach (whom the Bruins had been grooming before he left Providence to assist on the Seattle bench) is ready. And, if so, a Ryan Mougenel promotion to NHL assistant is anticipated.

I agree with Mick (and I have no inside information or special expertise). If it’s an outside hire and he’s available they pick Mike Sullivan. If they promote from within the choice will be Jay Leach.

Everytime I hear Leach's name being mentioned as the possible next coach of Boston I feel like it's almost a bad joke designed to torment Bruins fans further. If it happens the Gavin McKenna watch becomes realistic for Bruins fans.

That is how they would have done it in the old days, for sure. I'm not convinced they're running the old days playbook, however. What previous GM would have been a seller at the deadline, only 2 points out of a playoff spot?

I think Sweeney knew the team he built wasn't going to contend, I think he understood the direction they went last summer wasn't working (and was curiously counter to what he said he wanted to do, which was to get faster). I think they have been deliberate about this re-tool and I think the changes they want to make will extend to the coaching staff.

Isn't Sacco technically still an "interim-coach"? Should make it easier.

Voted other....cause ........I just don't know.
I am also not sure what kind of team the Bruins will skate next year, neither what will be their ADN.
This year is tough as hell to watch and hopefully the rebuild will take two years like some folk said....

Imagine this board being around 46 years ago when Bruins moved on from Don Cherry to………Fred Creighton. Wow. That would have been something! This has nothing to do with the thread per se, but sometimes what we expect and the shock of what happens ends up sending us for a loop. Same for the activity here back when Robbie Ftorek was made coach. People (me included) at the time said no way a week before……then….Robbie it is!

I think for 2025-26 it’s Leach as they have an idea what they have. I would prefer a whole new crew behind the bench to go with loads of new face for a full season next year though.

It will indeed be interesting to see what choices they make to the coaching staff before next season.

No disrespect to you, but I find this post disgusting.

It doesn't matter that the player was a black ace. Does that make him less of a person?

And it doesn't matter that the perp was a video coach.

They were ALL responsible. Yes, some more than others, but no one gets off their responsibility.

You either have the character to do the right thing or you don't. Character is EVERYTHING.
Quennville is no longer my first choice.

This has less to do with what happened in Chicago than the fact that after the deadline, Boston obviously has a radically different roster & trajectory.

His age and old school mind set are significant factors, especially now.

Todd Nelson is my guy.

But, as noted, it will likely be Leach.

Don Sweeney is many things.

"Visionary" isn't one of them.

See what I mean?

Sweeney wouldn't know "the vision thing" if it walked up and slapped him, repeatedly and with enthusiasm, in the face.

Oy!

If it is Leach I will be furious. He's part of the present shit show and does not deserve to be promoted to the head coaching position. The defense has actually regressed under his direction ( injuries are no excuse, they didn't have a clue even when Mac & Lindy were healthy). It would send the wrong message.

I don't recall a single opinion here or elsewhere that had Sweeney clearing out three long-time vets at the TDL even though the club was within sniffing distance of the playoffs at the time. It feels like all bets are off because it's clearly not business as usual right now. Does that mean they won't do the predictable, annoying thing in the next coach hire? No, but I don't think it's a safe assumption any more. Let's see what happens over the summer.
