He needs to be moved this offseason for a second rounder or something. Cut losses and re-coup something that can be spent at the next TDL. We can’t walk this guy to free agency as his game is so low impact it’s not worth the carrying cost.

At this rate, we will be attaching the 2nd to dump him.

Tre also doesn't need more picks to use at the deadline.

Worst Trade in TML history. Absolutely useless player. Most good teams spend their precious high end draft capital on high end players, the fact that it was used on a "third line center" is inexcusable.
Third line C? Who is the third line C you speak of…. Because Laughton certainly is not. He is barely an NHL player. He is not even a 4th line player. He needs to scratched for the rest of the season and then bought out in the summer.

Complete waste of a first round pick and blue chip prospect.

What are the comparables for a trade this bad in recent deadlines? I remember HF blowing up when Feaster traded a 1st for Shane O'Brien year and years ago but that feels like a steal compared to this
Thankfully the Filip Forsberg trade can never be beat. So, no matter what, it will never be the worst TDL trade of all time.

Definitely some terrible pro scouting from the Leafs.

It was clear as soon as he was signed that he's a winger based on his analytics. The one thing I will say is that his current performance is a bit exaggerated towards the negative side.

He's not this bad and will recover to a more average performance. But I am doubting how effective he will be in the playoffs in his current state.

Came over from flyers boards. Laughton at his prime was really good 4th line player who very obviously isn't a natural center as he simply can't create for others. Overall though flyers have done a lot to put Laughton in position to succeed utilizing him on the wing with superior players. Thats the only time he was able to be productive and at no point he could be considered a defensive stalwart. In a way he is very reminiscent of Wayne Simmonds as he was quite adept at attacking off the rush and being good forechecker. But he got slower while the league is getting quicker and quicker.

The worst part is the Leafs won't sit him... Because of the cost they paid for him they will move him through the line up taking out more impactful players to try to make a "fit". This organization never learns.

"blue chip"? What the? Wow.

Learns? Learns from you?

Why are you ignoring his entire career? His whole judgement is based on his time with the Leafs?

Then what was the point of trading for Laughton if the Leafs were supposedly looking for a 3rd line center and ended up trading good assets for a 3rd line winger with limited offense?? As someone else said in that case you could've just played Grebenkin and get almost the same result or bring back in Jarnkrok.

Better yet don't trade Minten and give him a good run at 3C and see if he couldn't handle it. He certainly couldn't be any worse than Laughton right now and if Minten works out then you already solved your 3C issue without having to send assets out for one that now we're saying isn't a good center and hence defeating the purpose of the trade to begin with.
Hey man I agree with you. I wanted them to prioritze a legit center, but I’m not going to lie to my self that Laughton is a better center then he is a winger because it’s clear he’s not. But to be fair, the leafs needed a LW and a center, so maybe if they use him as a LW they can salvage the trade and get something out of him. I think he can be a 40 point wing with J.T. And at center, I just have a lot of questions with that.

If they do want to use him at center I think they have to give him very strong wing support I.e Knies and Marner or McMann and Nylander. When he played with Konecny there was an uptick in his play, their line had an expected goal for percentage of 59.3 GF %. So there’s that at least. But if we use him at center and put Domi or Robertson on his wings I would have a lot of fear with that line defensively.

Paying a 1st for this guy is turning out to be worse than paying a first for Foligno, which is something I never thought would be topped.
You cannot tell me we couldn't have acquired a better 3C for that price, absolutely no way in hell.

Sounds like Vancouver was just looking for anything for Brock Boeser. Maybe some top six scoring for the same price would have been better, if you were forced to spend that pick. I don't see a full 82 games of Laughton as value either.

Man, Tre really botched this one:

I was never a fan of this, but has been worse than I thought. He just… does nothing out there?

And he was never going to fill the 3C hole. What a waste of assets.

I wanted to take a closer look at our new acquisitions last night, so I placed a bet on Laughton scoring and Carlo getting a point/assist, so how funny was that goal getting called back? Not very. The odds were quite generous.

Laugh didn't do very much, but it seemed like he never had much of a chance, everything was broken before it got started. Put him on the 4th line and he's going to be a Lorentz, give or take.

It's looking like a bad acquisition at a horrific overpay. But we could have at least set aside more games to see what we could get out of him in the top 9.

I'm getting more and more convinced by the day that Tre and Chief are not on the same page, which isn't good.

I reguarly post in this thread because it pisses me off how inept they were on this trade. You don’t just throw away a first rounder AND a good prospect without knowing exactly the player you’re getting

Folks I think we really just got a 4th line winger who may be lucky to chip in a goal in the playoffs but not counting on it.

Tre needs to redeem himself and get a 1st back somehow like Dubas did on the Sandin trade

For all the talk of him being a 40-ish-point player, in the last two season he's 8th on the Flyers in 5v5 P/60 at 1.54, barely ahead of Poehling and Atkinson at 1.45 and Cates at 1.43. Poehling and Atkinson are barely rated as anything league-wide (Atkinson is probably done after this season) while Cates has a reputation for being defensively capable. In the same time frame, this puts him between Steeves (at 1.58) and the broken husk of Jarnkrok at 1.47.

He averaged 12:05 5v5 for the Flyers. If he keeps getting that kind of icetime 5v5 plus SH but no PP time that's a 25 point season over 82 games. Maybe up it to 30 if stays healthy and gets in on a few shorties or if he somehow makes it to PP2 for a bit.

I'm just not seeing what the urgency was to make this move. Yeah sure he's probably going to pick it up because how could he possibly contribute less, but why waste the assets on a player with such a limited skillset unless he's having a career year and noted as a playoff performer?

I would have still held on to the first round pick. It's still a valuable asset and we don't have any left. Running out of assets here. If we don't win now, what are we gonna do in the future?
It's a reach to think an NHL player from our drafting position will be ready before the big 3 peak is over.

It looked like they couldn't land Schenn and didn't want to pay the price for Nelson. Then it became FOMO and grabbed the last thing left on the store shelf.

Leafs always panic buy and overpay. They also always give term to old guys. These are things that the Leafs are a notorious for doing. They have always been reluctant to rebuild without rushing it.

All in all, the Chairman and CEO and President need changed. Nothing short of that a cleaning of the house will fix this organization.
