To the bold, not necessarily a bad thing, but raises the questions: Why is it so askew of obvious needs (in context) and why does management seem tasked by it?Every year there’s an online group think add for Toronto. A few years ago it was Brandon Hagel and this year it was Scott Laughton. Laughton was a terrible target, not what we needed and way too expensive. However they made that mistake it was a mistake and it will go down in infamy as a JFJ worthy mistake.
1st rounder and a very good prospect! Not gonna write the guy off, but Laughton is a dime a dozen player you can find every free agency. Even at his peak he's never worth a 1st rounder, that was an insane price to pay.

I got ripped on here for saying we should trade a 1st for Granlund who would be the perfect 3c for Nylander. But people didn’t want him so enjoy Laughton lol
The problem is Brad gave up a 1st and Grebenkin for Laughton and not something like a 2nd and a 4th or a OK prospect for him. He overpaid for a decent at best 3C who as you said isn't going to move the needle much either defensively or offensively.Guys who cares. If this team succeeds or fails Laughton is like the 15th most important/responsible guy for it.
He's a 3rd line C , he wasn't going to move the needle much anyway. Y'all thought we were trading for prime Ron Francis or something
Dallas absolutely cooked. It's going to be either them or Colorado for the Cup IMO.I got ripped on here for saying we should trade a 1st for Granlund who would be the perfect 3c for Nylander. But people didn’t want him so enjoy Laughton lol
The cost? Would've rather just kept the first and see what we had in Grebs.Guys who cares. If this team succeeds or fails Laughton is like the 15th most important/responsible guy for it.

My moneys on the avalanche nobody’s beating that team that was a hell of a retool sakic is a lot different than shanny that’s for sureDallas absolutely cooked. It's going to be either them or Colorado for the Cup IMO.
We got duped by the Wendel Clarkson thing again didn't we. It makes you wonder what US team owners and managers think about Canadians.
Look Sam, I will sell these Canadians on Jeff Finger. Nooo waaay, watch.
Obviously this train of thought leads to, how are Maple Leafs fans in all American cities like that. And it's obvious. Because the smartest Canadian move south to make more money.
Harsh
Leafs fans can be very annoying when it comes to seeing the grass as greener on the other side of the fence anytime Ufa or the trade deadline is around. Then they watch the player suit up and the novelty really wears off. Maybe years of mediocrity has created some kind of inferiority complex that makes fans see other potential available players in a far better light than justified.Laughton on paper is exactly what everyone wanted on this team including the media.
What a package Philly got in return.
Really savvy retool. Got Drouin to be a good top 6 on a cheap caphit. Redid their goaltending mid season. Necas at 6.5 mil saved money so they could get nelson. Got a good 4th line center in drury who can win face offs. I see Colorado beating Dallas. Heiskanen is rumoured he might not be ready for rd 1…My moneys on the avalanche nobody’s beating that team that was a hell of a retool sakic is a lot different than shanny that’s for sure

Our pro scouts are terrible .. i would fire each and every one of them today .. no one who watched Scott even remotely like me would have ever given up a 1st rounder for him at this stage of his career .. sure ok trade if it is for a 3rd rounder and a prospect but no way ever he commands a 1st rounder .. terrible cost for a player who is not helping us on da ice right now
it is truly embarrassing we get fleeced and gave away our 1st rounder .. there is no choice now but to play him .. sad state of affairs .. most Leaf fans know their hockey and can't be bamboozledOur pro scouting has looked pretty bad for awhile now.
For as long as I've been watching the team, it feels like we always badly overpay for players and don't find under the radar players often enough.
There should be no reason why the Toronto Maple Leafs have any type of poor scouting.
We do this thing where we make trades for the sake of it. Dangle the 1st rounder by all means, but aim higher.Seeing as the Leafs' 1st round pick is likely to be 20 or lower that's not all that high of a price - and likely the reason the Flyers also required a prospect to get the deal done. Since losing him (and admittedly the Hathaway injury has also hurt) the Flyers have been in a tailspin. That speaks volumes of his value.
