World juniors is entertaining precisely because it's full of mistakes and entertaining. I remember watching Canada-Russia games back in the early 2000s where the lead would change 3 times in 2 minutes. Take it for what it is. Kids are inconsistent. Tune into an NHL game directly after WJC and you see why it's so rare for a teenager to handle the NHL.

What the hell?

Canadians aren't soft. It's just that international hockey isn't as important as it once was. With modern communication there are more avenues to engage, jockey with and compete against other countries.
People don't always need to live vicariously through hockey players as an expression of patriotism anymore; especially via a bunch of pimply teenagers. Hey its great if you win - celebrate, but not the end of the world if you lose.

I swear, these international games bring out the boomers like the bat-signal is in the sky or smth.

I will disagree. We are a soft country. What happened last night was an embarrassment. No hard work, no checking or hitting, no elbow grease to get into the tough spots. Just hoping that Latvia just sort of opens the lanes like they were parting the Red Sea in order for us to score. You know, we are allowed to criticize what we saw.

Well, I hope the Sens put up a good fight.

We’re a bit down with Ullmark out for awhile during one of the hardest stretches of our schedule but the other guys are going to have to step up.

Jets are a wagon so Ottawa will have their work cut out for them.
Yea. that the only draw back of Ulmark.
In and out of line up.

They're still playing on pure adrenaline.
Get to the NHL its pure structure, Systems, Play the right way, Game management , pace to get through 82 game schedule. ......then real hockey full out at play off time.

Gretzky lost at the World Championships.

This whole “Canada can’t lose to anyone” is pretty outdated thinking

The US Junior programme is on par with ours if not better. Europeans routinely win major awards in the NHL and European led teams win the Stanley Cup.

This isn’t the 1940s anymore.
Nobody dmsait Canada should win every year. Heck they didn't even medal last year. But the dud beat Latvia 10-0 last time they played. A humbling loss on team of cocky kids.
Coaching staff will have to get to work.
Interested to see if USA rolls over Latvia.

Canada didn't even play their #1 goaltender who is coming off a shutout because they had to play a back to back.

It’s such a ridiculous narrative that Carter George couldn’t possibly handle back to back games.

Meanwhile, the Latvia goalie is playing back to back 17hrs after facing 57 shots plus another eight in the shootout.

You know they can just stay home with their families and billets for Christmas. No one is asking them to play. But if you do at least have some pride in the sweater you are wearing and those that did it before you. Show up and work hard and beat the team that assumed they themselves were getting their lunch handed to them three hours prior. This is the best precursor to playing in the NHL. It shows you the pressure you'll be facing. You hope they learned some lessons from this, but it was an embarrassment last night to see that.

I don't think anyone has said he couldn't play a back to back? But he didn't. I don't even think goaltending was an issue last night regardless.

He could have. Just didn't. Good to get the back up in too.......might need him later in tourney.

I for one am GLAD that Canada lost to the Latvians...shows good character when they bounce back and win the next game...

Latvian goalie Arturs Irbe stole the show last night....can't blame the Canadian offense! Arturs played incredible

Canada has NEVER started a 17yr old kid in net since 1987. That’s not a coincidence. There’s a reason for it.

But Cameron decided he’s going to re-invent the wheel this year.

Goaltending “wasn’t an issue” just like having Luca Pinelli and Cole Beaudoin in the lineup “wasn’t an issue” and not playing Sam Dickinson on the PP “wasn’t an issue” either.

It’s the cumulative effect of so many bad decisions and mismanagement by Cameron that cost Canada the win.

Criticize all you want. But keep it in perspective.

20 or so pimply teenagers don't reflect the country as a whole, nor do people's reaction to them.
It's not the good ole days where athletic competition was one of the few ways people could engage with adversaries. Step into the modern world my man!

Hockey isn't that important. The sun will come up tomorrow, life will continue as normal.

Unbeleviable result! Congrats to Latvia and Latvian fans for the first ever win over Canada in juniors. The upcoming game of my team, Finland vs Latvia just got a lot more interesting.
