Shootout is stupid gimmick, Canada got a point. Nobody remembers this game when we win the gold again.
Hey now.. lots will remember this game for a long time.lol.

I do think this will benefit.canada in the end. They win next two and they still have the easier path to semis. Can't think of a better time to lose.and face adversity.

I guess the crowd who cheers for the underdog was happy?
I predicted 10-0 Canada and was thrilled for Latvia winning. And Latvia beat my Czechs last year here. It was an amazing moment. I think the loss will help Canada. Won't help Cameron's popularity though lol

Let's have an analogy reality check ...

"Rocco Grimaldi scored twice for the U.S. in the opening period to negate Latvia’s 1-0 and 2-1 leads."
Nobody forbid Alex Tuch (79 pts in 74 games that season for Sabers) to score against Latvia and claim bronze for USA.

And for your reality check, Latvia played 3:3 with USA (no OT back then) at 2006. Olympics with NHL-ers.

Good on Latvia!

Also, good on some Canadians that needs to eat some humble pi. Yes, you’re still the best hockey nation in the world, but just take the loss with some dignity for once
It's because they feel their dominance slipping. Was expecting a dominant tournament after the 5th place finish last year so I'm pretty surprised they're laying another egg.

How on earth do you come back from this? I am trying to think historically when any nation lost such a demoralizing game and then came back to win the Gold. This is one of those situations that feels just like 2006 in the Olympics when we lost to Switzerland 2-0 and it almost wouldn't have even felt right winning the gold medal after that. This is what this feels like. We can go 5-0 the rest of the tournament, even blank the U.S., and it would still feel weird winning the gold medal. That's literally how bad this loss is. You have a bad loss to Slovakia, the Czechs, etc. You don't lose to a team with two NHL drafted players and one that you beat 10-0 a year ago. It just does wonders for your morale. I am not sure if you can skate back from this. Canada never did in 2006 and that was professionals. What's worse is we possibly lost our best defenseman because he for whatever reason couldn't see a giant goalpost right in front of him.

I had a bad feeling in the 1st period. They were sluggish, they were just sitting back and not pressuring them and they went into the 1st intermission 0-0. All of the sudden a team that assumed they would be trailing by 3-0 or 4-0 by the end of the 1st period had some life. If you told me we would score zero even strength goals in this game I would have laughed at you. PROLINE had Latvia winning this game at 31:1 odds. They didn't even have an option for Canada to win because the odds would have been non-existent. That's how bad this was.

All of the things that concerned me are coming to light now and it starts with Dave Cameron. For 13 years I can't shake off thinking about the collapse in 2011's gold medal game anytime I see his face. And this just drills it home even more. This guy should never have been within a long country mile of being behind another Team Canada bench. If the team is doing drills tomorrow until their hands bleed then Cameron better be doing them with them. What a disgrace. This team is shameful.

If they win the Gold I’m not going to care about a loss in the round robin.

Otherwise, why even have one at all?

If it means the team has to go through much tougher competition at this point through the elimination games, well that’s the bed that was made.

I agree that the loss is concerning and it’s hard to believe that a team that can lose to Latvia, as well as the Latvians played, will take care of business against USA, Sweden etc.

But we’ll see. Let’s see what they are made of.

With guys like Celebrini and McKenna coming through the pipeline, I’m actually more optimistic about Canada’s future than I was 5 years ago.

Personally, I’m chalking this one up to bad management, bad coaching and underestimating your opponent. Much like in 2006 in Torino.

Not to mention, an admirable and valorous performance by the Latvians.

Goodnight sweet Prince Latvia. You are about to be put to sleep in Ottawa.

Canada 10-0.

On a good note.. Latvia has made 2 of their last 3 quarters here which is exceptional. They've been in and out of this tournament the last decade but finally found solid footing and are hitting quarters. Very encouraging. This is also a super young team. They are built for next year if they can stay in main pool. The Germany game is their Superbowl and I'm guessing will be an amazing match!
They were wise words

I think this jimpstarts a gold run for Canada. Will be a blessing in hindsight.

Last year Latvia beat the Czechs 5-2. No controversy.. they were better and played great.

We went on to eliminate Canada in quarters and put 8 up on Finland to win bronze.

Also, really happy for.latvia. that game was awesome..

But we’ll see. Let’s see what they are made of.

I'm not seeing it. Look, in the 2010 Olympics we had a close call. Switzerland took us to a shootout in the round robin for some reason. Crosby scored the winner and we won. It was one of those "Okay, a win is a win" type of things but at least we came out with a win. Team Canada in 1976 - probably the best team ever - had a game like this against the USA. We won 4-2. We were up 3-0 in full control and then the US with no star NHL players narrowed it down to 3-2 in the 3rd period and Sittler then popped an empty netter at the end. Closer than it should be, but even so there are times a great team has a closer call than they want but at the end of the day you STILL win it. This team didn't. Canada had a close call in the 2014 Olympics with Latvia but at least still won it, and this was the quarterfinals. It was 2-1 and in that game the ice was tilted to the point where when the Latvians carried the puck past centre ice you took notice, because it rarely happened. That's how dominant that game was. Yet Canada still won - in regulation - and didn't allow a goal the rest of the tournament.

I am not sure this team can overcome this mentally. A team with only two NHL drafted players who you beat 10-0 a year ago comes into your home rink on your home soil and embarrasses you in what is the most shocking loss your country has possibly ever had in a hockey game. This is epic proportions type of historically bad. They lose to Finland, fine. It isn't pretty, but at least its Finland. Latvia? I mean, Latvia?

Personally, I’m chalking this one up to bad management, bad coaching and underestimating your opponent. Much like in 2006 in Torino.

And we all remember how Canada performed after that demoralizing loss to the Swiss in the 2006 Olympics right? They scored three goals in their next three games, with two more shutouts against them. When you lose to a team like Latvia, you just quite often can't come back from it. And I am trying to find a tournament where a gold medal team in any tournament (Worlds, Olympics, WJC) lost to a relegation bound team and then still won the gold. It deflates you. Can you imagine the trolling that is going to happen to them in the New Year's Eve game when the US players mock them for losing to Latvia after the US pounds them - I assume it will be a blowout - 9-0 or something? This is to be laid at the feet of Cameron, he didn't have the players ready. He is a disgrace of a coach and why they picked him just shows you the old boys club is thick.

Latvia have some interesting prospects this year. Murnieks the biggest one followed by Osmanis, Uljanskis, Mateiko, Berzkalns, Bulans. They can easily beat this shit Finnish team with their shit coach.
Rimpinen can't save their asses every game.
Feldbergs and Ozons shoudl also be decent for Lativa against the European teams at least.

I look forward to see McKenna again! Murnieks, Schaefer, Catton, Molendyk Osmanis are others to follow with excitement.

And as a Flyers fans of course also Bonk and Luchanko.
Well... I mentioned Mateiko.

A lot is going to have to be different.

I’m also happy for Latvia. It’s a true hockey country and it will mean a great deal back home.

To be fair, the Czechs aren't Canada. And the tournament was in Sweden last year. At least it wasn't home ice. Canada loses to a team they pounded 10-0 last year and they do it in front of their home fans who paid a lot of money to watch absolute filth last night. You just don't put that jersey on and play with that kind of shame against an opponent that was surprised they weren't losing 5-0 in the 1st intermission. You let someone else put that jersey on and play with more pride. I have never forgot Cameron's coaching from 2011 when he cost us a gold medal.
