(Stephen King's) Silver Bullet

Typical 80s horror movie. Small, idyllic American town that has an encounter with evil.. Good mood & suspense with little gore (or plot). Because of how thin the story is, I assume it was based on a short(er) King story. It was entertaining tho. I may have seen it back in the day & forgot about it; I'll probably watch it again on a slow or sleepless night.

Rate it a 5 (on 10 pt. scale)

No, have heard good things about that one though. The MCU movies I remember watching:

Iron Man - Actually really liked the build-up with him getting captured, building that suit, then laying waste to the soldiers but didn't like it after that. Even as the first movie to the MCU (and seeing it in theaters when it opened), the whole climax just felt so shallow and generic.

Thor - Completely forgettable.

Captain America - Completely forgettable, I just remember the ridiculous look of Chris Evans when he had the smaller body.

The Avengers - Completely forgettable, remember being really put-off by the generic baddies during the climax.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Disappointing considering the hype, didn't see what elevated this above any of the others.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Genuinely good movie. Funny, good characters, had heart.

Avengers: Age of Ultron - I actually fell asleep in this one.

Captain America: Civil War - To be honest, I can't remember if I actually watched all of this or just saw the airport scene. I think I may be getting parts confused with Winter Soldier.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Really disappointed in this considering I liked the first one. It just felt like they were trying too hard to recapture the magic of the first one.

Spider-Man: Homecoming - I do like Holland as Spider-Man quite a bit, and there was some good comedy in here, but I think I was turned off by all the elements that tried to tie it to the MCU. Felt like it lacked heart and wasn't truly a Spider-Man movie. While I can sort of appreciate a villain that wasn't just looking to end the world, I also didn't find the Vulture particularly interesting either. This and Ragnarok probably round out my top 3 though, there are good elements here.

Thor: Ragnarok - Another movie I can appreciate aspects of such as the overall colorful look of the movie and some of the humor (the rock character that Taika Waititi played was great), but I don't feel like everything completely clicked.

Black Panther - Hype machine getting out of control. This was so unbelievably generic.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse - Watched the first half of the movie but got bored. May revisit someday but probably not.

Infinity War/Endgame - I think it's something I can appreciate on the level of tying this insane cast of characters together and actually making a story work (honestly my favorite part of Endgame may have been the credits where you just kind of have to marvel at how insane it is to get all these big-name actors together for a movie; you look at names like Robert Redford and go "Oh yeah, he was in this for a bit, wasn't he?"), but everything is just so bland and there are no stakes. I feel like it doesn't even matter that Stark died because they can always magic him back in when they need him. They'll probably go a phase without him or something then loop him back in.

I also remember seeing Doctor Strange on TV but I just watched small segments of it with no real context. Can't really comment on it at all.

I pretty much agree with all this. Portions of Logan are more what superhero movies should be, and portions are a bit weak. The mood and way it was filmed feels completely outside of the current MCU.

I believe they released it in color and black + white.

Sometimes I feel like people look at superhero movies and blow them up to something bigger than they actually are because they contain elements that aren't typical of the genre, which I'm kind of weary of for Logan. Like when everyone lost their shit at how deep the villains were in Black Panther and Infinity War because they had semi-justifiable reasons for their actions it was looked at as some big thing because usually it's just a generic bad guy that is blatantly going for world domination or something.

If I was God for a day, I would outlaw super hero movies. Having said that, they will run their course and, hopefully, the day will come SOON when the cost benefit is low and studios make something more substantial.

Rest assured, this too shall pass.

been watching a bunch lately I'll try to list them off

T2 Trainspotting - 7/10
Honestly better than I expected for a movie that seemed to fly under the radar. Holds up to the original

Silence of the Lambs - 8/10
Somehow just got around to seeing this, lived up to the hype I suppose

True Grit - 6/10
Didn't like this as much as I expected. Felt like the story got a little lost at times to me. Good characters though

Vice - 8/10
Can't believe Bale didn't win best actor for this. Really great acting all around

Annie Hall - 8/10
Not a huge fan of older movies, but this was a very charming movie and funnier than expected

Locke - 6/10
Credit for the creative way of storytelling, but even that couldn't save that it just wasn't that interesting

Slumdog Millionaire - 6/10
Was honestly underwhelming, was pretty much exactly what I expected

Serenity - 4/10
Mostly watched this because I heard it was so bad that it was actually entertaining. It truly was

Jackie Brown - 8/10
Underrated movie

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - 7/10
Was extremely underwhelmed, maybe my least favorite QT movie

Into the Spider-Verse - 8/10
Very cool visually, cool concept, well done

The Revenant - 9/10
Liked this a lot more than I expected. Amazing directing and visuals. I got lost in this movie in a good way

That's about it for the last month. Been on a huge movie kick lately

I only agree on Jackie Brown.

Midsommar [2019] :

Midsommar can be broken into 2 movies...

The first is about 30 minutes. It's (literally) DARK, mean spirited and scary - a young lady tries to find her sister.

The second, about 2 hours in length, includes the same young lady, her inconsiderate boyfriend and his friends, and is BRIGHT, psychedelic, unsettling, and involves a Swedish cult.

Both parts are well done - although the second is a little long.

Midsommar is not for all tastes. It's weird and a difficult watch but, for people who are open minded and willing to invest 2.5 hours, it's quite a "trip".

7.5/10

The Mule - 2/10

Wow just watched “The Mule”... honestly might be the worst movie I have ever seen, no joke

Some of the worst dialogue ever. “The Room” level dialogue. Nothing subtle about it in any way. Everything is so deliberate and obvious. It tells you everything rather than letting you see it or infer it (the scene on the highway, rather than showing a bunch of black trucks pulled over instead the handler goes “wow another black truck pulled over”)

The continuity between shots was absolutely atrocious too, so much so that it was distracting. You would see someone get up and walk away in a close up, then five seconds later see them do it again from the same spot as if they hadn’t moved. Or the opposite, a character is moving in one shot, then it cuts and they’re completely still. Items on screen move around between cuts. At the BBQ place the salt shaker literally disappears and reappears. I’m not even looking for this stuff it’s just incredibly obvious and lazy. Just the editing in general was so bad. No scene could end until you saw that character walk entirely out of the room

Awful characters, including Clint Eastwood’s character. Absolutely no depth to anyone, they are as generic and stereotypical as possible. Even down to the clothes they wear, something was just so off. Super generic looking clothes like they just bought them off the rack at JC Penny 5 minutes before

The plot and writing is an absolute mess. Obvious spoilers here but here we go. The dude just randomly sees and angry old man, talks to him for 20 seconds, then offers him a job driving for the cartel? When his handler is getting questioned by the police, for some reason Eastwood’s character decides to give the officer two giant cans of popcorn from his trunk which are located right next to the drugs? Like I get they were trying to be cute and maybe he was going to rat, but it was pretty obvious to see through and why would he ever do something that risky in the first place?!? When the other cop pulls behind him (silently somehow) and then the officer plays stupid of course so Earl’s character doesn’t get caught. Also Jesus these officers are acting so desperate just pulling over random citizens in black trucks and arresting random people and searching their vehicles with absolutely zero claim to do so? He can’t even afford to pay his own mortgage and was going to have to move out, then he does one run for the cartel and gets paid like 15k I think they said, and somehow he goes out and buys a gigantic Lincoln truck that probably costs like 50k? Come onnnn

Not to mention it’s just completely uninteresting. Awful plot, nothing happens. It has absolutely no style to it whatsoever. Seriously looks like something a college student with a ton of money would direct

I cannot express how bad this movie is

Clint Eastwood is 89 and, by many accounts, is cranking out movies as fast as they can be made. It's too bad because there's a quality movie in The Mule somewhere but, when you spend very little time rehearsing, only do 1 or 2 takes, and rush the editing, you produce lesser films like The Mule and many of his recent works like The 1517 To Paris and Jersey Boys.

Have you seen The Beach Bum? It's...certainly something

Just watched this and I have to say I was kinda charmed by it. I suppose where one stands on Matthew McConaghey determines how you're going to feel. I'm a fan for the most part. This one may be the most McConaghey McConaghey has ever McConagheyed. Talk about playing an exaggerated version of oneself. I dug the vibe though (I wasn't even high, though that probably would have enhanced it!). Shaggy and light and more than a little silly.

Ready Or Not [2019] :

Ready Or Not is a mix of Get Out, Clue and the bride from Kill Bill. It is also one of the most predictable movies I've seen in a long, long time.

***

Grace is about to marry into the wealthy "Le Domas" ("The Dumb Ass") family - aren't the writers clever! There's one catch. She has to play a game where, if she draws the wrong card, she will be hunted and sacrificed. Of course, she draws that card. What follows is a literal blood bath.

30 minutes into Ready Or Not, I hadn't jumped or laughed once - odd for a movie that's suppose to be a Horror/Comedy. So, to keep myself occupied, I tried to predict what was going to happen. Unfortunately, that turned out to be much easier than I hoped.

My End Of Movie Score :

1 laugh through the entire movie.
2 jumps.
12 salted pretzel pieces with 2 small cups of Cheez Whiz.
A 70% prediction rate.

4/10

Respectfully brother, but I LOVED this movie. Found myself laughing quite a bit. Though I will concede I am a bit of a sucker for these locked-door, And Then There Were None type stories. It certainly isn't shocking to see how the story unfolds, but I thought there were moderately clever twists and turns throughout. It ain't winning an Oscar, but I thought it was one of the more entertaining 90 minutes I've spent in a dark theater in a while. I think that's a star-making performance by Samara Weaving here. Buy in now and say you knew here back when!

I did like the way the movie looked. Other than that, I was really disappointed.

I'm mostly in agreement. I'm not sure I'd qualify it as "good" in the traditional sense. I'm actually not sure how I'd qualify it at all, haha, but I was definitely entertained, if not occasionally minorly flabbergasted, while watching.

Tropic Thunder - kind of an embarassement, especially with that cast and contribution from Etan Cohen - 2/10

(edit: I stand corrected on the Cohen/Coen blunder)

This is where I need to be the guy who tells you that Etan Cohen is not the same as Ethan Coen.

This is one of the few times you don't want to be like Bill Murray.

Also, Tropic Thunder is great IMO. Pretty much everyone crushes their role.

Ahahahahah, oh damn!! Thanks. With that cast, I thought it was kind of possible they had some kind of support from Coen... But nah, hated that film. Looks like a fun time with friends doing it, but not really funny nor clever.

( I know, saying something isn't clever after my Cohen/Coen gaffe doesn't sound much credible)

Hellboy (2019)

4/10
That’s where I’d put it as well. Oddly enough having David Harbour’s Hellboy was actually the beat part of the flick. Very poorly written. Didn’t flow well at all.

Coyote Lake (4/10) - Kind of a sludgy thriller where everything is predictable. I’ll admit I tuned in for Camila Mendes. Decent enough acting. Not sure why I can get subtitles for the English dialogue, but none of the Spanish is translated. So it’s another movie where I can guess the dialogue, but I really disconnect from the movie and end up giving up most of the way through. Seems that I find a lot of these movies lately. Anyone have a solution?

Respectfully brother, but I LOVED this movie. Found myself laughing quite a bit.
My ONE laugh came when Grace found one of the child care workers in the Lazy Susan and the worker said (paraphrasing from memory, so don't quote me) "I'm really not a child care worker. Mr. Le Domas just hired me because he likes the way I dance."

Now THAT made me laugh!
